Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

To be a Contender, You Need an Actual Tender

Avalanche blank19goavsgo writes "So far the 2008-09 season has seen the avalanche start the season with an abysmal 5-7-0 record. For avs fans this record simply isn't good enough and an arguably be attributed to the lack lusting performance of their "goalies". For God's sake, even the Toronto make-me-laughs are doing better!

The poor management decision exhibited by frank giguere in investing 1.5 million dollars into 2 mediocre back up goalies has resulted in:

combined save % of: 0.86875
combined GAA of: 3.50

Personally, I think the team owes not only its fans but their captain, Burnaby Joe the effort to put an established no. 1 goalie in net. I would like to see the team make a trade w.Chicago for a goaltender. The stats speak for themselves in establishing the possibility for either of them to be chicago's No.1:

Khabibulin: 4-1-2, GAA - .238, save % .919
vs.
Huet: 2-2-1, GAA - .273, save % 910

Khabibulin at this point seems to be using the threat of losing his job to keep him playing at the level Blackhawk brass expected him to.

Current Avalanche salaries committed: 53,060,000 --> two possible scenarios

A) To Chicago:
    Lw - Wojtek Wolski - cap hit = 2,800,000
    D - Jordan Leopold - cap hit = 1,500,000
    G - Peter Budaj - cap hit = 750,000

    To Colorado:
    G - Nikolai Khabibulin - cap hit = 6,780,000

or

B) To Chicago:
    Lw - Wojtek Wolski - cap hit = 2,800,000
    G - Peter Budaj - cap hit = 750,000
    C- Cody Mccormick - cap hit = 522,000
    1st rd draft pick 2009

    To Colorado:
    Cristobal Huet - cap hit = 5,625,000

Scenario A would leave alleviate some cap space for Chicago while providing offense on the point with Leopold, and putting an center capable Wolski in the roster to replace Lang. Also, it doesnt leave them high and dry in backup goaltending. For Colorado, It gives them solid goaltending, an open roster spot for either potent prospect Kyle *****iskey or Daniel Tjarnqvist

Scenario B does not have the same financial alleviation as does the prior deal. However, it does add the same in Wolski, some needed grit in Mccormick, a backup G and a draft pick. For the Avs, once again Solid Goaltending while not leaving the lineup in tatters.

A - leaves Avalanche cap hit at 54.79 million
B - leaves Avalanche cap hit at 54.613 million

These deals would leave plenty of room to sign Forsberg at the deadline to another prorated contract, and turn the Avalanche into a sudden contender w. solid goaltending, reliable defense and a very potent offense. Furthermore, it Gives Joe another shot.

P.S --> I KNOW FORSBERG GETS INJURED, BUT THERES NO DENYING HIS ABILITY WHEN ON THE ICE.... AND THAT HE GOT THEM INTO THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR.

This is my first submission to HTR, so take it easy and let me know what you think!

Wolski, Budaj, AND Leopold for Khabibulin!!! The guy just on waivers! You could get Khabibulin straight up even Raycroft probably, and keep everyone else. They just want to get rid of his salary, and would take back Raycroft as a backup if it meant they could rid themselves of that 6.75 million cap hit.

Khabi isn't worth Leopold let alone Wolski or any sort of draft picks, the guy was on waivers a month ago.

Colorado should try to get Halak, at .$750 000 /year it doesn get any better than that, Halak would be a deal for a lot of teams right now, New-Jersey also will have to look for a Goalie soon!

Khabi is an FA after this season, although I see where you are coming from with the cap space, giving up Wolski OR Leopold would be a huge mistake, let alone both of them.
Huet has decent numbers, but is looking a little shakier than people expected.  Certainly doesn't need a 1st rounder thrown in since you'd be doing Chicago a favour by cleaning up their salary mishap.
Well sourced and well written article though, nice work.

They just need to settle down and wait to pick up a goalie at the deadline for cheap.  They should stop being so high on Budaj and ride the hot goalie.  Raycroft comes in and wins them a couple games, and then they switch back to Budaj.  Budaj wins a couple and they switch back to Raycroft.  Stick with your hot goalie!

Obviously the situation isn't desirable, but it's not so bad that they can't get through it.  I believe Theodore only really turned it on a little ways into the season last year as well, and everything worked out fine.

The Avs should throw their hat in the Sundin sweepstakes, and wait for Forsberg to return

Smyth - Sakic - Hejduk
Wolski - Sundin - Forsberg
Tucker - Stastny - Svatos

...ridiculous

If they're that desperate, Roloson could probably be had for Svatos as soon as he comes off his hot streak.  I hear Svatos is in the doghouse half the time anyways....

First off, what was Colorado thinking picking up Raycroft?  I am sure that they tried to lure some goalies via UFA or looked into trading for one but to settle on Raycroft is just awful.

You can trade a bag of pucks for Bulin noting his cap hit.  In fact (can't think of anyone at this time on Colorado as I have not really looked at stats and cap hit), you can trade an overpaid/underperformain player to Chicago for Bulin just for taking that cap hit.  Not that Bulin sucks, I think he woul dmake Colorado a better team but Chicago's hands are tied right now and need to get rid of him. (They had him on waivers)

Halak is the goalie they should go after. Montreal is looking for a top 4 D-Men. Can Leopold be that guy ?

Damn did i ever LAUGH when the Avs signed Raycroft and Tucker!  GOOOOD ridance!

PS ur math skills are alright but ur player valuation skills need work.  Id take a second look at ur trade proposals and think logically.  A player put on waivers and not claimed has little to no value.  Secondly Chicago wont trade Huet, they want to win now, not continue to amass young players.

Niki might be playing better but Chicago would rather hold onto Huet. He's younger, and they just signed him to a multi-year deal. 'Bulin's off to a good start a UFA at the end of the year, what happens if they deal Huet then lost Khabiboulan in the summer?

Wow you just had to throw in a diss at the leafs there... if you watched any of the games they have played this season you would no that the "laffs' are outworking their opponents in pretty much every night. This is one of the hardest working teams in the league as Ron Wilson's teams usually are. If we had more talent on the team then we would be a top contender for sure. And they are in 8th place, correct me if I am wrong, but that would go to show that they are playing well. To say that you are doing worse then the leafs should not be an embarrassment, what is an embarassment is an avalanche team that currently sits 13th in their conference, thanks to 4 straight losses.

If your goalies is playing that horrible the answer is simple, play better defense, don't let him get as many chances to try to make saves. The way you go off, even though some points are good you sound just like some of those leafs fans that everyone hates for writing those articles. I guess it's okay though as long as you're not in favour of Toronto.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong here?  I thought that you couldn't trade a player in the first year of a new contract.  Is that right or am I on crack?

If I am right, then your second trade scenario goes out the window since they signed Huet just this past summer.

I have no opinion on the legit trade proposal as I am not that familiar with the Avs players involved.  However, as someone already commented, giving up three reasonable to good players for a guy who cleared waivers earlier this season sounds like a bit of a high price to pay.  I imagine that you're just trading salary for salary in this scenario.

Also, maybe the price for Khabibulin goes up with Brodeur's injury ...
