The leafs could use the 7th pick to get Cowen to try to make up for losing Schenn but really is tavares worth that. Burke has said there is no use filling a hole by emtying another. i would rather they trade a couple prospects(tlusty, oreskivic, pogge, kulaiman) some of those guys instead of schenn. As much as i would love to see Tavares in the blue and white next year i think the more reasonable move would be to trade for a top 5 pick and draft Schenn and Cowen. Atlanta and LA would be good targets. Atlanta need players to keep Kovulchuk and LA needs talent and leadership tp help them make the playoffs. BYE BYE Kubina and Kaberle"

Re: Leafs May Have A Shot At Tavares (Score: 1) by Rico420 on Monday, May 04 (User Info | Send a Message) | Tavares will wear the blue and white...
When he is 27 years old and is A UFA..otherwise there is no way that they should make any move that involves dealing Luke Schenn that's idiotic - and I'm sorry but the Leafs don't have enough to give the Isles or the Lightning for that matter to help fill any holes in their roster that are in glaring need of repair.

Re: Leafs May Have A Shot At Tavares (Score: 1) by mojo19 on Monday, May 04 (User Info | Send a Message) | Call me crazy, but I would do this. Especially if you figure we could draft Cowan. I know Luke Schenn has lots of potential and could be a great d-man from years to come. I think Tavares could be more of a franchise player. He could be like another Crosby. Guys like that aren't easy to come by and you have to give something to get something.
In the end, if you go by the rule that the team who got the best player won, then the Leafs (based on potential) would win this trade. There is a big risk (like you guys said above) that Tavares could be a bust, and that he hasn't played a game. Which is why this trade would be a high risk. But, high risk... high reward.
Let's take that gamble. |

Re: Leafs May Have A Shot At Tavares (Score: 1) by bleedingblu on Tuesday, May 05 (User Info | Send a Message) | First of all, giving up Luke Schenn makes no sense. You fill up one hole to open up another.
The Islanders may finally be getting a clue on rebuilding a team. Since they signed DiPietro for a million years you might as well build from the goalie onwards. Mark Streit is the only solid defenseman they have. Gervais got some points but he also got a sweet -15 plus/minus. Viktor Hedman would be a logical move for this team in it's current condition.
As for Tampa Bay, there is no room for another sniper on this team. LeCavalier, St. Louis, Prospal, Malone and Stamkos already gobble up a lot of ice time. Even Stamkos was averaging 14 mins a game. Tavares is a PP specialist and so is Stamkos, LeCavalier and St. Louis. Tampa needs a veteran defenseman. Krajicek and Mezzaros have some offense but they are young. A logical move for Tampa would be to trade their pick for some experienced leadership. Even if they pass on Tavares and select Jared Cowen that would still require some time to develop him. I'm sure Tampa wants to improve quickly.
Toronto has something to offer in Kaberle and Kubina but keep in mind Leaf fans there are other teams in the league with a little more to offer. Its up to Burke to use his negotiating talents to convince Tampa that Toronto has what they need.
It should be an exciting off season....

btw duchene is now ranked 2nd in ISS rankings haha |

What does everyone think of that deal. |

Tampa has stamkos if hedman is there they will daft him no question. Which leaves burke to deal with getting the third pick overall which with his track record shouldn't be to hard to get without opening up lots of roster wholes. Plus nowhere in that article does it say that burke is going to hands down throw away schenn, i seriously doubt he would trade one of there best asset's |

They just wanna get some green stuff. It's a mafia thing. |

He would look good in a Leafs uniform! |

But I wouldn't trade a bunch of prospects, they are the teams future. Now the question is: is Luke Schenn worth trading for to get Tavares? Well, Tavares holds the record for most goals ever in the OHL. I think Schenn is worth trading (sadly cause I really like Schenn) |

Re: Leafs May Have A Shot At Tavares (Score: 1) by leafs787 on Monday, May 11 (User Info | Send a Message) | ok, heres what i think they should do,
Trade Kaberle and their 1st for Colorados 1st pick (Result: 3rd Overall Pick) - Tavavres, Hedman, and Duchene will all more than likely become superstars in the league and franchise players, so drafting any1 of those guys makes sense to me while dumping kabbys salary
Trade Grabovski, Stajan, and 5th, for the Coyoties 1st pick (Result: 6th Overall Pick) - With this pick they can either draft another forward like Evander kane or Brayden Schenn, or get a young D in Jared Cowen who would fit in nicely with Luke Schenn, also they dump Kubina and Stajans salary, and Coyoties have 2 1st round picks after trading Jokinen so it makes sense
Trade Lee Stepinak, Staffan Kronwall and Mike VanRyn for Floridas 1st pick (Result: 14th Overall Pick) - They can draft a Zach Kassian or a Scott Glennie who could develope nicely with their 6th pick playing for the Marlies for a year or so, and trading Lee wouldnt be bad since he never really fit in well this year and they already have lots of young talent on the back end so they can let those 2 guys play somewhere else
Offseason Sign Jay Bouwmeester for 42M, for 6 years - Helps develope young D like Luke Schenn and is a franchise D Sign Martin Havlat for 12M, for 3 years - Preforms well in the playoffs and usually puts up good numbers in the regular season when healthy, so he would be a bit of a gamble but at the same time a high scoring second line winger which the leafs need Sign Johan Gustavsson for 2M, for 2 years - Try the young goalie out and see what he can do
Let a year go by making the playoffs or not and see what happens, then the Next off season they should:
Sign Rick Nash for 48M, for 6 years - Elite player with size that i think would flourish as a Leaf in a bigger market
And just say with the trades in `09 they drafted: 3rd Overall Pick: John Tavares (Tampa and NY didnt take a chance on him) 6th Overall Pick: Brayden Schenn 14th Overall Pick: Zack Kassian
Then after the `09 picks have developed for a year, your 2010-2011 lineup could look something like this:
Forwards:
Rick Nash - John Tavares - Jeremy Williams Alexei Ponikarovsky - Brayden Schenn - Martin Havlat Nikolas Hagman - Jiri Tlusty - Nikolai Kulemin Christian Hanson - John Mitchell - Boyd Devereaux Extras: Tyler Bozak, Zach Kassian (still developing)
I think Jeremy Williams will finally have a break out season and stay with the team but maybe not nessesarily on the first line. And as you can see the leafs have tons of talent and lots of depth scoring on the team, Bozak and Kassian are still developing too, and Devereaux i kept round because hes consistantly a hard worker, (i.e. his hat trick in the last game of the season, they were all hard working goals)
Defencemen:
Jay Bouwmeester - Luke Schenn Ian White - Pavel Kubina Phil Oreskovic - Jay Harrison
Extras: Anton Stralman, Jeff Finger
Phil and Jay are tough defensive defensmen against other teams top lines, Ian and Pavel are great 2 way defensmen, and Jay and Luke have great chemistry as 1 is defensive while the other is offensive
Goalies:
Vesa Toskala Johan Gustavsonn
I can see Johan being a great back-up goaltender kind of like a Jonas Hiller, he can play big minutes when he has too like if Toskala was to get injured and could later on be there #1 goalie, but for now Vesa has the net and will be a good #1 goalie
