Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

Is Tavares the right way to go for Toronto

Maple Leaf Trade Rumors blank93killer93 writes "With draft day getting closer there is even more rumors about the leafs trading to get Tavares.  As great as Tavares is and as much as i like him i honestly think it might be the wrong thing for the leafs to do.  Would it not seem more reasonable to trade Kabaerle and Kubina to teams and stock up for more first rounders? The ideal Targets would be Atlanta, Los Angeles and Phoenix.  I know Phoenix might not want to take on any big contracts with the whole bankrupt thing, so go after the other 2.  LA needs leadership and skill to make the playoffs. For their first rounder give them Kubina or Kaberle and have them through in Hickey/Teubert and a roster player.

Then trade the other big D-man to a team with a pick under the leafs current pick lets say 8th - 14th.  There are alot of teams that could use a top 2 defenceman to push for the playoffs.  Florida might want one with Bouwmester leaving, Edmonton might want some more fire power plus we could take penner's contract if they will give us their first, or buffalo, Nashville, Dallas all teams that want to compete for the stanley cup.

Then Draft Brayden Schenn 4th/5th/6th , Jared Cowen 7th and a guy like Ryan Ellis, Nazem Kadri or Zach Kassian with the other pick.  Now look instead of just one top guy we have 3 top prosoects to add to Luke schenn and rebuild or team.

So what would be better a franchise player in Tavares, or a number of top prospects."

I'd rather have the franchise player in Tavares.

There will be more guys like Cowan, Schenn, Kassian, Ellis, Kadri etc. to be had in future draft years. Every year a new crop players of this calibre with this potential come around. There will always be options to acquire players of this calibre.

Landing a Tavares is a rare oppurtunity. You could build a franchise from scratch starting with this player. If there's a deal to be made, you make it.

Its a good point, Burke has put all the attention on Tavares which is preplexing considering he's a long shot at best. If somehow we could land another top ten pick, in a deep draft, that could pay better divedence. Even if Tavares is a franchise player, developing and locking up solid prospects that are somewhat late bloomers (ala Richards and Carter) make for better contracts and balanced roster.

I'll always beat the drum for a David Poile type rebuild. Had Poile had the finances he could have held together what was a successful rebuild in Nashville a few seasons ago. Subtle and sagacious just isn't Burke's approach.

For the love .... seriously? Still on this?

Its not going to happen guys. As much as I dislike the Leafs, Id LOVE to see a local canadian born franchise player, ya know, PLAY in a canadian city. But it isnt going to happen. I get this is a trade rumours/hockey discussion site, but lets try to keep it in the realm of reality here. The Senators have a better shot at getting the #1 pick than the Leafs do.

If it does, I'll eat crow. But it doesnt seem likely.

Are you well?

"For their first rounder give them Kubina or Kaberle and have them through in Hickey/Teubert and a roster player."

You honestly think giving Kaberle or Kubina will pry a top-5 pick AND a top prospect?

No chance - maybe (and this is a stretch) - maybe LA trades their 1st for our 1st and Kubina or Kaberle.

Tampa wants the Leafs to sweeten the deal by throwing in Ryan Hollweg. The deal could fall apart now.
