Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 What If?....

Opinion blankfuturebruin writes "What if the salary cap didn't exist and you were the GM of you favorite team?  What would you do with your team?  I've got a wild spin on the Bruins here, and while it certainly is 100% guaranteed to not happen, it still looks pretty good.

Boston Bruins 2010 Dream Roster:
Ovechkin-Datsyuk-Malkin
Iginla-Crosby-Kessel
Krejci-Lecavlier-Kovalchuk
Bitz-Gerbe-Wheeler

Chara-Pronger
Phaneuf-Bouwmeester
Hunwick-Niedermeyer

Thomas
Rask
Wouldn't that be a scary team to face?I'd like to hear what you would do with your favorite team or if you would do the Bruins differently I'd like to know what you would do."

glad to see a bruin fan on this board.....but obviously you havent been around this world long enough to know what jeremy jacobs does with his team.

lets say there is no cap.....but you have to build a team that is the character of the bruins legacy and you have to have a team that is not filled with egos.

(i find it funny that you kept the current goalies)

Wow, did you watch hockey at all before the cap? Teams like this never (and could never) exist. Just because there is no salary limit doesn't mean teams have unlimited resources. Look at the KHL, they don't even have that kind of money. Lets see what these players would take as minimum salaries:

7mil:
Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Malkin, Iginla, Crosby, Kovalchuk, Lecavlier, Bouwmeester
6mil:
Phaneuf, Chara, Pronger
5mil:
Thomas
4mil:
Niedermeyer, Kessel, Krejci
1mil:
Bitz, Gerbe, Wheeler, Rask, Hunwick

total: 96 million/year

Toronto can't even afford that, none the less Boston. Also, not to poke a hole in this theory, but in a capless market as big names come off the board and get signed, other teams are willing to pay more for less. So if Boston were to sign Crosby and Malkin at 7 million and try to sign Ovechkin for 7 million, some other team (say NYR, Toronto, MTL) is going to offer 10 million in order to stay competitve.

Even in the capless era, there was still a salary cap, it was just unformal. Hockey teams can't afford to spend 100 mil/year. At it's highest, the NYR and Detroit each had salaries around 77mil/year. Worked out for Detroit, not so much for the Rangers. And even in a capless era, there was never a team that had /every/ star player on it, or where every player on the roster (or at least the top 3 lines and 3 pairings was a superstar. Sorry.

My Toronto team...

Bryan Burke says to the teacher's fund:  Ok...this is how its going to go down Ontario Teachers Pension Plan of Greediness (aka MLSE and Richard Peddie)...We are going to go out there, tear sh!t up, and buy ourselves a hockey team to pay back the loyal fans of Leafs Nation.

Here's where it gets tricky...

We bring back a couple of recent players (Sundin, Antropov).  Then we sign all the best free agents (Sedins, Gaborik, Bouwmeeter). Next we draft Brayden Schenn 7th overall somehow.

We trade our 1st round pick 2010, Phil Oreskovish, Mikhail Stefanovich, and the Toronto Rock Lacross team to Anaheim for Chris Pronger.

We trade our 1st round pick 2011, Jimmy Hayes, Tyler Bozak and one of the apartment buildings MLSE owns to Vancouer for Roberto Luongo.

We trade Chris Hanson and Jason Blake to New York for Sean Avery to spice things up a little.

Forwards
D. Sedin, H. Sedin, Gaborik
Ponikarovski, Antropov, Sundin
Hagman, B. Schenn, Avery
Kulemin, Stajan, Grabovski

Defence
Kaberle, Bouwmeester
Pronger, L. Schenn
Kubina, White

Luongo
Toskala

None of this made much sense...but I like my team now!

2-Chara/Pronger

I'm not really a fan of these dream team type scenarios, but the one interesting fact I noticed from reading the posts is that no one except futurebruin has Malkin on their dream team.

I"ll change it up a bit here and slightly edit the Pens roster instead of going into full ridiculous mode.

Kunitz - Crosby - JP Dumont
Sykora - Malkin - Kulemin
Talbot - Staal - Kennedy
Cooke - Madden - Dupuis

Orpik - Gonchar
Letang - Goligoski
Jbo - Scuderi
Eaton - Gill

Fleury
Clemmenson

So, even with an unlimited budget, I only added a few million. I think thats a pretty decent lineup as well.

If there were no salary cap nowon would have a team like that still. First these players would demand much more money and teams wouldn't pay that much or they would make no profit.  Second players like kovalchuck would never agree to play on a team and get third line minuets they would still want plenty of ice time.  Finally the bruins would do all right since they have lots of money but teams like NYR, Toronto, and Montreal would probably be spending the most money.  If there were no salary cap the NHL would be exactly like it was before there would be no super teams.

There seems to be a lot of these articles lately and I don't get them. Its just random lists of others favorite players. This one is a tad more ridiculous because each dream team would play for another's particular abitrary favorite team.

All these lists amount to is displaying your stacked roster on your NHLPA game, and I'm still suck on NHL Hockey for 64, so Valerie Kamensky anchors my top line on my dream team. Who cares.

Besides, wouldn't having your own all star take the thrill of the game away? In a non competive league winning does matter anymore.
