bbruins37 writes "So with the season finished now, lets get excited for the next stop: the awards.
I want to congratulate the Pens for their cup feat even though i have to eat my own words. I was happy to see Crosby win it if it was any consolation.
Now, what I'll be doing is saying who I think should (or should have if not nominated) win the awards and then who I think will end up winning them.
Hart
Should win: Steve Mason - if were talking about most valuable how can you not give it to him? The rookie carried the team on his back.
Will win: Alexander Ovechkin - I'd be shocked if he didnt take it.
Norris
Should win: Zdeno Chara - Call it bias if you want but no other defenseman plays a better all around game in the league. Arguably the best shutdown d-man in the league and got 50 points, and 19 goals.
Will win: Mike Green - I think it'll be a toss-up between him and Chara but people will be too impressed with Green's offensive numbers.
Vezina
Should and Will win: Tim Thomas - If anyone has an argument against this I'd like to hear it.
Calder
Should and Will win: Steve Mason - Read above.
Selke
Should and Will win: Pavel Datsyuk - Another toss up with Mike Richards but Datsyuk is just too good at what he does to lose this award.
Jack Adams
Should and will win: Claude Julien - He's done a 180 with this franchise in only two seasons. 2nd best offense, best defense.
Lester B. Pearson
Should win: Evgeni Malkin - I'm starting to think there hasn't been a more underrated player ever. Hopefully the Conn Smythe (which they got right) will influence this.
Will win: Alexander Ovechkin - The players seem to love him.
Lady Byng
Should win: Martin St. Louis - the guy needs an award for how he played this season. The team tanked and he remained a very sportsmanlike player.
Will win: Pavel Datsyuk - They'll probably be enamoured with his history with the award. He wouldn't be a bad choice at all.
Masterton
Should and Will win: Steve Sullivan - Book it. Wouldn't be a crime if Zednik won but this is Sullivan's all the way. If Chelios wins for being old and playing 20 games I may have to stop being an NHL fan.
So there you have it. I'm not sure how San Jose got robbed but I guess it was an all-around effort.
So the official list of who will win:
Stanley Cup - Pittsburgh Penguins Prince of Wales - Pittsburgh Penguins Clarence Campbell - Detroit Red Wings President's Trophy - San Jose Sharks
Conn Smythe - Evgeni Malkin, PIT Art Ross - Evgeni Malkin, PIT Maurice Richard - Alexander Ovechkin, WSH Hart - Alexander Ovechkin, WSH Lester B. Pearson - Alexander Ovechkin, WSH Norris - Mike Green, WSH Vezina - Thomas, BOS Jennings - Thomas/Fernandez - BOS Selke - Datsyuk, DET Lady Byng - Datsyuk, DET Calder - Steve Mason, CBJ Masterton - Steve Sullivan, NSH Jack Adams - Claude Julien, BOS Bud Light Plus Minus - David Krejci, BOS King Clancy - Shane Doan, PHX Roger Crozier Saving Grace - Tim Thomas, BOS NHL Foundation Player Award - uhhhh Shane Doan Part II, PHX Mark Messier Leadership - Sidney Crosby, PIT
(I think that's all of them?)
Team Rapsheet
Boston Bruins - 5 awards (yeahhh baby, we only win the big ones)
Pittsburgh Penguins - 5 awards
Washington Capitals - 4 awards
Detroit Red Wings - 3 awards
Phoenix Coyotes - 2 awards
Columbus Blue Jackets - 1 award
Nashville Predators - 1 award
San Jose Sharks - 1 award
Book it."

Re: The Awards (Score: 1) by leafy on Saturday, June 13 (User Info | Send a Message) | I have to think about the awards a bit.
But just wanted to congratulate the Pittsburgh Penguins on their Stanley Cup title. Full credit for defeating the classy Red Wings right in Detroit.
HOLY CRAP!!!
My Stanley Cup Final prediction was bang on, and I went 14 for 15 in the playoffs!!!!
Here's my original prediction and link (it's so hard to be humble).

Stanley Cup Final Analysis
Nobody posted an article on the Stanley Cup Final, so I'm posting my prediction here.
Pittsburgh over Detroit in 7
Comments
I'm going against my own early forecast weeks ago....I'm betting against Detroit.
Firstly, I think this series is too close to call. Looks like a 7-gamer.
Both teams know what they're doing on the ice. Both teams are confident. Both teams are dynamite.
However, I have serious doubts about the Red Wings health. Datsyuk has been hurt most of the playoffs. Lidstrom is not 100% and will play hurt. Draper is also ailing. Ericcson has a lower body injury.
Datsyuk and Lidstrom especially are significant injuries. A completely healthy Red Wings team probably takes the Penguins...barely.
Let's remember, even last year, a powerhouse Red Wings team took 6 games to eliminate a LESS experienced Penguins team.
Also, if nobody has noticed, as good as Detroit is this year, they were BETTER last year!!!
For one thing, they were much better defensively. Last year, Detroit gave up only 184 goals, compared to 244 this year!!! Huge difference.
The Penguins meanwhile learned a valuable lesson last spring, like the Oilers learned a lesson from the Islanders 25-years ago.
Crosby and Malkin are better than last year's playoffs and seem unstoppable.
And let's not forget that Bill Guerin has given the Pens another scoring dimension they lacked previously, and Fedotenko can fill the net as well. Jordan Staal is no slouch either.
It's true, however, that the Wings have more overall depth at scoring, with guys like Franzen, Zetterberg, Fillpula and Cleary scoring even if Datsyuk and Hossa and not producing.
Maybe the most important factor is defence. With Lidstrom and possibly Ericcson not 100% and with Rafalski having lost a step, an important question is raised: Will the Wings be able to defend against the ferocious Penguin attack? I
have serious doubts about this.
Also, the Pens defence is somewhat under-rated with Gonchar, Orpik, Scuderi, Letang, and Gill. Although Orpik needs to step up his play since he's been pretty quiet so far.
The series may very well be decided by goaltending: Fleury vs Osgood. The apprentice versus the master.
I've lost confidence in Osgood after the regular season, but so far he's proven me wrong in these playoffs. Fleury is one of the most athletic goalies in the NHL today. It will be an interesting battle.
In short, it comes down to whether the aging Detroit defense can shut down Crosby and Malkin, and whether Detroit's depth at scoring can offset the Penguins dynamic duo.
Should be a great series.

Re: The Awards (Score: 1) by shifterdarkwolf on Saturday, June 13 (User Info | Send a Message) | I think there is a very good argument against Thomas winning the Vezina. He only played 2/3 of the games for Boston. Not playing 1/3 of the games isn't Vezina quality, especially considering that he is playing on an extremely good team, a team that is almost as good without him (3 games under .666 with Fernandez, .666 with Thomas).
Steve Mason deserves the Vezina trophy this year. He made more starts than Thomas (60 to 54) despite being 3rd on Columbus' depth chart. He doubled Thomas' shutouts for the season (10 is a huge number for any single season goalie, none the less someone that only played 60 games, 1 every 6 games). His save % (.913) and gga (2.29) are not far off of Thomas (.933, 2.10) despite being on a significantly worse team. Sure, his win % is only .550, but a lot of that has to do with being on a poor team with poor defense. He took a mediocre-bad at best team on his back (team is 6-12-4 without Mason) and brought them into the playoffs. Thomas split time on one of the top 4 teams in the league and still bearly got better numbers....

Re: The Awards (Score: 1) by FrankTheTank3388 on Sunday, June 14 (User Info | Send a Message) | | As much as I love Claude Julien, I personally don't think he stands a chance against Andy Murray. Murray took a cellar team with basically decent talent out of the cellar and went something like 24-6-7 to bring the Blues into the playoffs. I know they got swept in the first round but the awards are already voted for before the playoffs start. |
