Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

bbruins37 writes "sorry this wont let me break it up into paragraphs...ok so a couple years ago for a school data project i did a report on who was the best team of all time based on statistics. It was 107 pages long so here’s the short form. (take into account this was done pre-2008 playoffs so pit and det might move up a bit. Here’s the jist of it though: Criteria: although some will argue only cups matter i set up a number of weighted criteria:Stanley Cups- 25% Regular Season Points Percentage- 20% Playoff Win Percentage- 15% Drafting Success- 7% Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees 7% Presidents’ Trophy- 7% Hart Trophy- 7% Art Ross Trophy- 4% Norris Trophy- 4% Obviously all subjective but i did conduct a survey to make it more objective. I came up with formulae to eliminate all of the bias possible. For example, a team could win 5 cups in 100 years an another team could win 1 in 5. So who’s more successful.
The number of teams in the league at certain times was also a bias i needed to get rid of but it will be apparent to you how i got rid of the bias through the formulae. So:To be noted: the team that gets the most points in each category is awarded 100% for that category and the other teams are a percentage of it. So if the Minnesota wild have the best Stanley cup score they get 25% automatically.Stanley cups: 2(Number of Stanley Cups Won / Seasons in the League)(Average Number of Teams in Stanley Cup Winning Seasons)+ 1(finals appearances/seasons in league)(avg. No. Of teams in finals appearances years)A weight of 2 for winning the cup, and 1 for making the finals.Regular season: (Total Number of Points Earned) / (2(Number of Games Played)) OR (2(Number of Wins)+1(Number of Ties/ Overtime Losses/ Shootout Losses)) / (2(Number of Games Played))Playoff winning %: (Number of Playoff Games won / Number of Playoff Games)Now youre probably wondering drafting success? This one is a bit of a complicated formula lol: (Number of First- All Star Teams Made)((1.5(The Number the Player was Selected Overall / The Total Number of Players in the Draft))+((The Number of Second All-Star Teams Made) (1 ((The Number the Player was Selected Overall / The Total Number of Players in the Draft)))So say joe Johnson was drafted 25th overall out of 50 players and made 2 1st allstar teams, and 2 seconds: 2(1.5(25/50))+ 2(1(25/50))After adding up all of the teams points you have to consider that making the allstar team with more teams gets harder so: (Total Number of Points Ac*****ulated)(Average Number of teams in the league in Drafting Years)HOF Inductees: (Number of hall of Fame Players/Number of Years a team has been in the League for) X (Average Number of Teams per Season in the History of the Franchise)The 8 newest teams were given the mean score as it would be unfair for this category. All awards: (Number of Trophies Won / Number of Seasons that a Team has Participated in that the Award was Given out in) X (The Average Number of Teams in a Team’s Award-winning seasons)As i don’t want to write out all of the ways i got rid of biases and all of the data just ask and ill let you know. Believe me, i don’t think i missed anything. But here are the findings
overall:
1. Edmonton Oilers- 83.093% 2. 2. Montreal Canadiens- 72.971% 3. Detroit Red Wings- 61.71% 4. Boston Bruins- 58.542% 5. New York Islanders- 56.666 6. Quebec Nordiques / Colorado Avalanche- 55.561% 7. Ottawa Senators- 46.195% 13. Chicago Blackhawks- 45.095% 14. Tampa Bay Lightning- 44.342% 15. New York Rangers- 43.923% 16. Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars- 43.305% 17. Atlanta Flames/ Calgary Flames- 42.64% 18. Toronto Maple Leafs- 42.134% 19. Buffalo Sabres- 41.744% 20. Los Angeles Kings- 41.582% 21. St. Louis Blues- 41.126% 22. Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes- 39.135% 23. San Jose Sharks- 35.031% 24. Florida Panthers- 34.742% 25. New York Americans/Brooklyn Americans- 34.426% 26. Vancouver Canucks- 33.639% 27. if you just believe Stanley cups are important:
Edmonton Oilers- 9.667= 100% Anaheim Mighty Ducks- 6.924/9.667= 71.625% Atlanta Flames= 2.736/9.667= 28.302% Atlanta Thrashers= 0% Boston Bruins- 2.976/9.667= 30.785% Buffalo Sabres- 1.25/9.667= 12.931% Chicago Blackhawks- 1.576/9.667= 16.303% Columbus Blue Jackets- 0% Detroit Red Wings- 4.413/9.667= 45.65% Florida Panthers- 2/9.667= 20.689% Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes- 3.333/9.667= 34.478% Kansas City Scouts/Colorado Rockies/New Jersey Devils- 6.188/9.667= 64.012% Los Angeles Kings- .615/9.667= 6.362% Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars- 3.179/9.667= 32.885% Minnesota Wild- 0% Montreal Canadiens- 6.764/9.667= 69.97% Montreal Maroons- 3/9.667= 31.033% Nashville Predators- 0% New York Americans/Brooklyn Americans- 0% New York Islanders- 5.559/9.667= 57.505% New York Rangers- 2.088/9.667= 21.599% Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals/Cleveland Barons- 0% Ottawa Senators- 1.92/9.667= 19.861% Philadelphia Flyers- 4.487/9.667= 46.416% Pittsburgh Penguins- 2.205/9.667= 22.81% Pittsburgh Pirates/Philadelphia Quakers- 0% Quebec Nordiques- 4.148/9.667= 42.909% St. Louis Blues- .923/9.667= 9.545% San Jose Sharks- 0% Tampa Bay Lightning- 4.286/9.667= 44.336% Toronto Maple Leafs- 2.424/9.667= 25.075% Vancouver Canucks- 1.306/9.667= 13.51% Washington Capitals- .813/9.667= 8.41% innipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes- 0%
Didn’t rank them in order but there you have it. If youre asking why Toronto is so low you have to consider that basically every year they won the cup there was 6 teams. Does that mean they wouldn’t have won in a 30 league. No, but that bias is unavoidable. Anyways, there you have it. Hopefully it can clear up some stuff...or start a debate."

Re: Best NHL Franchise (Score: 1) by bbruins37 (qwerty@hotmail.com) on Sunday, June 14 (User Info | Send a Message) | | haha wow this is hard to read. for some reason the parts arent bolded either...ah well. if anyone has any questions id be happy to answer them. although it was extremely tedious and took me like 2 straight weeks to do, it was actually really fun seeing it unfold. i thought MTL would have it locked down but there you go. |

Re: Best NHL Franchise (Score: 1) by HABSSTAR (loserleafs@hotmail.com) on Sunday, June 14 (User Info | Send a Message) | Wow, you obviously put a lot of work into this. I understand the idea of a bias based on a 6 team league, however the other side of the coin is that with a 6 team leauge there was no nights off.
The competition was probably greater than it is today. Imagine if you would a league today with only six teams. It would almost be nothing but All Stars.
Still a very interesting post. |
