 | Leafs keep options open |
Tim Wharnsby - Globe and Mail
Then the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager departed for Montreal with Leafs executive David Nonis in the hopes of increasing their odds to make a trade at the 2009 NHL entry draft on Friday and Saturday.
Burke revealed more than two months ago that he has set his sights on moving up in the draft to land sniper John Tavares of the London Knights. But while Burke has yet to make headway with the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning or Colorado Avalanche – the teams holding the Nos. 1 to 3 picks, respectively – he did admit progress was made in other trade discussions in the past few days.
There is belief the Maple Leafs have been zeroing in on New York Rangers defenceman Wade Redden and forward Peter Schaefer of the Boston Bruins.
Schaefer, 31, was buried in the minors by the Bruins last season because of salary cap concerns. He has one more year on his contract at $2.3-million (U.S.). Redden, 32, was signed to a six-year, $39-million unrestricted free-agent deal last summer, and the Rangers would not be averse to moving him.

Re: Leafs keep options open (Score: 1) by leafy on Wednesday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | I don't get that. Why would Burke want Redden over Kaberle/Kubina when he's more expensive and not as good?
Also what possible use could the Leafs have with Schaefer?
Probably rubbish. |

To Ott: Kaberle + Hagman
To LA: Heatley
To Tor: 5th overall + 2nd round pick
Ottawa gets a puck moving defenseman (please don't compare Lee or Campoli to Kaberle) and a top six foward in Hagman.
LA gets their franchise player.
Toronto gets Schenn and a pick.

To TB: Richard Petiot
To Toronto: 400k (Kolzig, Heward, Rogers) and a 4th (Carolina's)
So essentially Burke bought a 4th round pick for 400k from a financially struggling team. (the pick wat later reprimanded by the league in a seperate contractual issue regarding Frogren)
Say for instance Burke takes 2.3 million (Peter Schaefer) off Boston's books... would i be out of line saying the Leafs could potentially aquire a 3rd rounder? Yes there is a 1.9 million dollar difference there but Boston is not a financially strugling team and I doubt they would give up a 2nd.
Lastly im not going to touch on Redden...Because I absolutly want NOTHING to do with that overpaid sack of sh!t regardless of the package the Rangers offer. |

That would help Boston out, and not hurt us as we wouldn't be spending to the cap this year anyways. But picking up Redden's long term deal makes no sense since that would hurt us for years to come. |

If Im Burke Id offer a 3 year 5.25 million contract.
Year One 1.5 Year Two 1.75 Year Three 2
I believe thats fair but I suspect Grabo will want more and try and get 3 million per season ala Valteri Filpulla (4 year 12 million contract). |

Re: Leafs keep options open (Score: 1) by nordiques100 on Wednesday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | the bruins buried schaefer once already, all of last season in providence. so why would they bother desperately trying to move him when they can simply leave him in the minors and clear cap space that way?
redden, well i feel he is going to be a hab. he really was good under martin and his game slipped once martin left ottawa. i dont think its a coincidence. the habs, with the cap space they have could take on redden.
there are other possibilities:
giguere - 2 yrs left at 6 mil, familiarity with burke, allaire his goalie coach is here, it makes sense. i dont think they'd have to sell the farm either to get him. the ducks are happy with hiller and probably want to clear space for additions in other areas.
sarich - he has 3 yrs, 3.6 mil. quite a bit for a role player. they probably want to clear space to bring back cammellari and maintain their offence. they have pardy as a similar but cheaper option. sarich is the belligerent type that fits the burke mold and young enough to help now and later
lupul - 4 yrs, 4.2 mil per. unless someone takes briere, the flyers wont have any room to manuevre. lupul would be next up. burke knows him from anaheim and would be a decent offensive player for toronto. probably though would cost the leafs a couple of cheaper players who are still young. lupul doesnt have a horrible contract. he is only 25.
richards - another player who may cost some assets, but nothing like say schenn or a 1st. at almost 8 mil, its possible the stars may want to cut a few bucks off the cap. or maybe they wish to fill other areas with the money they spend on richards. the leafs should take a look cause he would somewhat resemble a number 1 centre which the team lacks.

Re: Leafs keep options open (Score: 1) by JustYouW8 on Wednesday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | I was just listening to NHL Live on NHL Centre Ice Network, and Darren Dreger from TSN was on the phone. He has said he has been in touch with a member of the Leaf management and there is no truth to the Leafs looking at Wade Redden, unless the Rangers can offer a good prospect or a high draft pick along with it.. there's no chance. Also, he has heard from sources OUTSIDE the Leaf camp that says Gustavsson is leaning toward the Leafs. Also, he mentioned Tampa is intersested in Kaberle, but how much they would be asking for the #2 pick is the question, whether it would include Kaberle, a pick, and someone else remains to be seen.. Nothing we haven't really heard.. Take it for what its worth.

Re: Leafs keep options open (Score: 1) by Bure96 on Wednesday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | I would ask for every single pick the Rangers have in this draft in any sort of deal to take on Redden's salary + 1st rounder and 2nd rounder next year.
Could you imagine though? If the Leafs had all the picks they had + every single Rangers pick? They would have about 16 or 17 draft picks...

The bartender replies, “Normally, dogs wouldn’t be allowed in my bar, but it’s not very busy right now, so you and the dog can have a seat at the end of the bar. But, if there’s any trouble with you or the dog, I’ll have to ask you to leave.”
The guy agrees, and he and his dog start watching the game. Pretty soon, the Leafs manage to score a goal and the excited dog jumps up on the bar, barks loudly, does a back flip and runs over to the bartender and gives him a high-five.
The bartender says, “Wow, that’s pretty cool! What does he do when they win a game ?”
The guys answers, “No Idea, I’ve only had him for 3 years.”
The last time the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup most of their fans were in diapers.
Coincidentally, the next time they win it those same fans will be back in diapers again! |
