 | Toronto Maple Leafs: Leafs, Thrashers talking |
Toronto among teams sniffing around Atlanta's No. 4 pick
Tim Wharnsby — Globe and Mail
Perhaps Brian Burke has a trading partner before the NHL entry draft, after all.
Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell admitted Wednesday he is listening to tenders for the fourth overall selection at the draft Friday evening, and he revealed he has swapped trade ideas with his Toronto Maple Leafs counterpart.
“We're certainly going to look at the trade market, but we've had no serious offers,” said Waddell, who was asked if he has been contacted by Burke. “We have talked to everyone. He has a better chance of getting to No.1 if he already has the [No.]4.”
Burke publicly disclosed his quest to land top prospect John Tavares of the London Knights more than two months ago.
But if neither the New York Islanders nor Tampa Bay Lightning – the teams drafting first and second, respectively – are willing to trade their selections to Burke, the Leafs GM has a back-up plan to go after Brandon Wheat Kings rugged forward Brayden Schenn, the younger brother of Leafs defenceman Luke Schenn.
The Los Angeles Kings are expected to take the younger Schenn with the fifth overall pick, so Burke would have to make a deal with the Thrashers if he wants to get his alternative man.

Re: Leafs, Thrashers talking (Score: 1) by leafy on Thursday, June 25 (User Info | Send a Message) | Well okay, this looks way more realistic than the Tavares dream.
Since the Thrashers are desperate to improve quickly to prevent a Phoenix situation, they could bite if the Leafs flipped them Kaberle plus the number 7 pick. But I doubt they would take anything less than Kaberle from the Leaf vets. |

Re: Leafs, Thrashers talking (Score: 1) by the_word on Thursday, June 25 (User Info | Send a Message) | Surprised how quite the Avs have been, they would make for a good target as their management seems to be a gong show, they're stuck in the misguided notion that they're playoff bound and their roster has many holes to fill.
To Col: 7th overall + Toskala + Kaberle
To Tor: 3rd overall + either Raycorft or Budaj + both Tucker's and Smyth's corpses?

Re: Leafs, Thrashers talking (Score: 1) by lukeleim on Thursday, June 25 (User Info | Send a Message) | it has been rumored that Brian Burke is interested in Ryan Clowe. The asking price is the Leafs first round draft pick. Obviously Burke isn't an idiot and he would not give up the seventh overall pick for Ryan Clowe. Here is my suggestion on how to aquire Clowe:
Anton Stralman and Jiri Tlusty for Ryan Clowe and the Sharks 4th round draft pick of 2009. |

Oh boy, what an amazing package. And they'll have about 4-5 million to spend on the Heatley salary savings. Could be very very very good day in Sens history. Best day since Alfie got drafted, the Alfie goal in OT and the Yashin trade. |

someone offering up something big for Kaberle? says Darren Dreger
not sure if that will come to fruition but i dont believe its someone in the top 5.
to get to 4, i think the leafs are going to need a 3rd team as it makes no sense for ATL to get kabby with bogosian, enstrom and hainsey aboard.
same with LA. they have quincey, doughty, johnson, hickey.
but i think kaberle to get 4 is fair. and they can keep 7, trade down with it to get other assets and try and wiggle their way back into the mid 1st to pick up kassian.

Re: Leafs, Thrashers talking (Score: 1) by Bure96 on Thursday, June 25 (User Info | Send a Message) | How come nobody has Oliver Ekman-Larsson going to Toronto? Could you find a more perfect fit to go with Luke Schenn?
A Scott Niedermayer clone to pair with Luke Schenn ... New Jersey won 3 cups with Niedermayer and Stevens patrolling the backend together.
Anton Stralman is still a good prospect, but Oliver Ekman-Larsson will be a game breaker at the NHL level.
Remember too, Toronto's real issue last year was keeping the puck out of the net, so why not take the highest rated defensemen on the board (assuming Cowen goes to Phoenix at pick 6)
And why would Toronto go with defensive defenders back to back years with top 10 picks? Cowen and Schenn might be scary to imagine, but I still think Ekman-Larsson should be the pick.
