number15 writes "Boston has offered RFA Phil Kessel to Toronto in exchange for Tomas Kaberle and the 7th overall draft pick.... Toronto is holding out to see any better offeres
TSN.ca
The Boston Bruins are in pursuit of Tomas Kaberle and a top 10 pick in today's draft.
Sources tell TSN the Bruins have offered restricted free agent forward Phil Kessel to Toronto in exchange for Leaf defenceman Kaberle and Toronto's No. 7 pick in the draft.
The Leafs are apparently canvassing the league to see if there are any better offers out there. Kessel, taken fifth overall by the Bruins in 2006, scored 36 goals and 60 points last season, his third campaign in the NHL. With restricted free agent David Krejci signed to a long-term deal and the team pushed up against next year's salary cap, general manager Peter Chiarelli was rumoured to be shopping the young scorer.
Kaberle completed his 10th season with the Maple Leafs in 2008-09 and has two years left on his contract worth $4.25 million a season. While he has a no-trade clause, Kaberle's contract allows him to be dealt during a small window in the offseason that opens with the commencement of the draft tonight.

Kessel is a pure goal scorer and will soon be potting 50 a year in my opinion. He is young and has to work out a few things still. He is a game breaker, the same type of player like Kovalchuk, Semin. Kaberle is a great defenceman, but the last couple years he has been injured and hasn't put up great numbers. I guess the wild card is the 1st rounder which cannot be overlooked.
Boston rids themselve of what I think a 40+ goal scorer and receives a top 2 defenceman and a 1st rounder. It is actually a good deal for both teams as Boston could use another Dman and Toronto needs a yound flashy scorer. I just think Kessel's ceiling is unlimited right now, and he is the best player in the deal, so I say no dice.

Boston is 25h, Leafs are 7th. Maybe swap players and 1st rounders (leafs would probably have to throw in a couple other lower round picks to make it more fair).
Tor: Boston's 25th overall, Kessel Bos: Toronto's 7th overall, Kaberle + 2nd or 3rd rounder next year, and a conditional
Boston moves WAY up and Toronto moves down in a deep draft without giving up a pick they don't get back this year.

I could see the Oilers & Bruins making a swap. The Oiler's need a pure goal-scorer, and it appears that Boston is looking for a solid defenseman and first round draft pick. And the Oil/Bruins have been long time trading partners, so this makes some sense.
To Edmonton : Phil Kessel
and
To Boston : Tom Gilbert or Denis Grebeshkov, Edmonton's 10th overall pick, and potentially a prospect/late round draft pick.
Rumors are that Jay Bouwmeester is interested in signing with the Oilers, his hometown team. And by swinging the trade with Boston, this gives the team an opening on the blueline to add JBo.
Any thoughts?

but if this trade happens:
Lucic - Savard - Bergeron Wheeler - Krejci - Ryder Sturm - Sobotka - Kobasew Bitz - Hamill - Thornton
Chara - Kaberle Wideman - Ference Ward - Hunwick
Thomas Rask
That top 3 defense would be somewhat ridiculous...3 dmen that'll get you 50 points.

It does look like Boston wins a bit with this but look at it more closely. Kessel is already a proven scorer. If he didn't miss games for mono, he would have been on pace to score 40. He's only 21-22 so you know he's still just going to be getting better. He's a player that Toronto could sign for a long time and be a scoring threat up there.
Kaberle on the other hand does have 2 more years to his contract at a cap friendly price but seeing how the cap will be unpredictable then and that Boston has a good group of young guys, who knows if Boston will be able to resign him when the contract is up? And draft picks are never reliable. Need I remind people of Alexander Daigle? So you're basically trading a young, sure thing guy who could sign for a long time for a defenseman Boston is likely to have for just 2 years and a draft pick which should never be considered a sure thing. You may think Boston wins now, but in 3 years from now, Boston may not have anything to show for it while Toronto could still have Kessel locked up for a few more years...

I'm shocked there's Bruins fans on here even thinking about complaining about this trade.
Do you honestly think that you couldn't just put boyd devereaux on savard's wing, and in kessel's spot on the powerplay? the result would be almost the same. kessel is good, and he will only get better, but he has a number of flaws.
For starters, he benefits a great deal from playing with Savard (top minutes, top powerplay), and playing for an extremely deep Bruins squad. Move him to the Leafs, and watch his production plummet. Sure he is a sniper, but who is going to pass him the puck in Toronto? It's a serious downgrade for him to go from being fed beauties by Savard and having Lucic watch his back, to having Ponikarovsky sloppily dish him the puck and Jamal Mayers watching out for him 3 minutes a game.
Secondly, Kessel is streaky. Oh yea, that's just what the Leafs need is more long stretches of no production. Kessel scored 36 goals last year, sure, but about 25 of them came in 18 games; he scattered a few throughout the season, and then had another hot streak towards the end.
He's also injury prone, and small, and Chiarelli has tried to move him numerous times in the past.
Wait for Philly to lose out on Jay-Bo, and go hard after them Burke. Don't go after this Kessel crap. The last thing the Bruins need is another one of our top prospects killing us for years to come (rask). |

there, he can use that plus one or both of the 2nds to maybe move up to the mid 1st round to get a shot at kassian
if he lands kessel then, and still has the 7th, there is where it can get juicy.
i think he can move into the top 5 if not hte top 3.
kessel to LA for the 5th and a prospect. this trade is required because while kessel is a potential terrific scorer on the horizon, the avs, bolts and isles dont want that kind of financial commitment.
the avs are rumoured to be trying to cut salaries the bolts, obviously wtih the lecavalier rumours
and the isles, well who knows.....
but if they pull that off, then here, we find the 5th and 7th available to any one of the top 3 teams. and from that the leafs end up with duchene or tavares.
i cant put it past burke to be this aggressive but it will be a miracle for sure. |

It could also be potentially great. If Anaheim manages to trade Pronger to LA, as previously rumored, for a 5th and a prospect, it could be much easier for Burke to move up to 5. He would be talking to a team he knows very well, and a team he knows has shown interest in Grabovski in the past.
Also, if Pronger is actually traded for a huge package, it really makes Kaberle even more valuabe. He is cheaper, and signed longer, so you would think whatever Pronger goes for, Kaberle would get close to that (and possibly more).
