 | Tanguay signs in T-Bay |
sensnation writes "RDS is reporting that Alex Tanguay has signed in Tampa Bay. Details have not been released but it is rumoured to be a one year deal.
http://www.rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/281306.html
It is reported that two members of the Lightning, possibly future linemates in a new French Connection, Marty St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier would have swayed Tanguay Tampa's way, despite the fact that Minnesota was rumoured to have offered more money.
Tanguay gives Tampa another top six forward that will allow them to ice 2 dangerous lines. The top line should remain the St. Louis-Stamkos-Malone unit that had some sucess late last year while Lecavalier and Tanguay should connect on the second line, possibly with one of two way forward Jeff Halpern, a former 46 point scorer, or youngsters Steve Downie or Martins Karsums.
Tampa will have now significantly upgraded their defence and marginally improved their offense (though depth is an issue). If Mike Smith can stay healthy and play up to his potential, Tampa should get out of the bottom 10 in the league, and maybe, maybe into the Eastern Conference playoffs."

Re: Tanguay signs in T-Bay (Score: 1) by leafy on Saturday, August 29 (User Info | Send a Message) | Totally off topic. Below is "must read" material for all Leafs fans.
Lessons from the past....a reminder that every Leaf today needs to be carefully scrutinized by fans. Not applauded just because it was made by the Leafs.

Re: Tanguay signs in T-Bay (Score: 1) by leafy on Saturday, August 29 (User Info | Send a Message) | For example, check out the reaction of JFJ's management team when Leaf scouts spotted Brunnstrom (Okay, Brunnstrom is no superstar yet in the NHL, but that's not the point).
Hopefully things are different now with Burke.
" When Bergman saw Brunnstrom playing for Boras of HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden's second-best league, he knew the kid was bound for bigger things. Convinced of Brunnstrom's talent, the scout finally summoned Button to Europe to see for himself. And as they continued to watch the prospect – at one point buying tickets to a game (rather than alerting other scouts to their presence by requesting a pass) and sitting among the fans wearing big coats and hats so as not to be recognized – Button soon agreed with Bergman that Brunnstrom had NHL potential. The developmental plan, which seemed to make sense to Brunnstrom's camp and to Bergman, would be to sign the player to a contract and have him play the 2007-08 season in the Swedish Elite League. He would play for Farjestad, a respected club where he would be coached by Hakan Loob, a Swede who'd earned a Stanley Cup ring with the Calgary Flames in 1989 and a man who knows what it takes to make the jump to the NHL.
"It was a no-brainer," says Button, looking back. "I mean, here was a free agent you can sign for next to nothing? It's a no-brainer."
But when Bergman brought the plan to Ferguson and the GM's lieutenant, Mike Penny, the no-brainer became a flat-out no.
"Mike Penny, with John Ferguson right there, said, `There's no f--king way we're f--king signing a guy and having him play in f--king Sweden. What the f--k is this bullshit?'" says Button. "I'm sitting there thinking, `Okay. Don't listen to me. That's okay. But you hired this guy, Thommie Bergman, and this is his job, to find talent in Europe, and this is how he gets treated?' But that's exactly what was said." "

Re: Tanguay signs in T-Bay (Score: 1) by cam7777 on Saturday, August 29 (User Info | Send a Message) | I wonder if the Bolts would have any interest in Lee Stempniak (should he get his act together) around December/January, to round out their top six. The article here mentions Downie, but I can't imagine the management there is too thrilled with his progress thus far. They take a chance on him, and he comes in and gets suspended from the AHL for tripping a referee.
That said, as a Leaf fan, I wouldn't mind taking a shot on Downie. Hopefully Wilson can turn the kid around. Something like Stempniak, and a 5th for Downie and a 2nd. It would be a nice way to round out that top six for Tampa :
Tanguay - Lecavalier - Stempniak Malone - Stamkos - St.Louis |

Re: Tanguay signs in T-Bay (Score: 1) by leafy on Saturday, August 29 (User Info | Send a Message) | Watch out for Tampa this season. Tanguay now balances things out a bit more up front. Plus Stamkos will be better this year. And with Hedman and Ohlund added to the blueline, the Lightning could see a jump in the standings.
