Heres my predictions:
1. Philly(basically last years squad + pronger..need solid goaltending from emery)
2. Boston(basically last years squad-kessel)
3. Carolina(playoff success, lots of chemistry with new players and new coach)
4. Pittsburgh(Just won the cup, still not deep enough for me to put ahead of philly, but could easily have 2nd most points in conference)
5. Washington(Varlamov is still young, and Thoedore isn't the best starter. Good team with a few holes)
6. New York Rangers(King Henrik, nuff said)
7. Ottawa Senators(still talent loaded, Leclaire in net, and a number of young defensemen ready to break out)
8. Florida Panthers(This will be the year they sqeak it. No superstars, but solid depth at every position)
9. Montreal Canadians(Too small, too soft, too inconsistent..perfect for Jaques Martin...probably would have made it if they were in the southeast)
10. Toronto Maple Leafs (Will take plenty of penalties, but get a consistent effort. In the end likely wont make the cut unless Gustavsson becomes a star)
11. New Jersey Devils (Aging squad will have meltdown year. Too slow, and simply not enough skill at the backend)
12. Atlanta (Lots of players in contract years, but still not good enough at keeping the puck out of their own net)
13. Buffalo (Tough division, injury prone players, teams can adjust for their speed. Long year in sabreland is my prediction)
14. Tampa Bay (Probably get better years from most of their star players, but Hedmen and Stamkos represent their only young up and comers. No reason to predict major improvements...not yet anyway)
15. New York Islanders (Pittsburgh was worst team in league in Crosby's first year..no reason to put them anywhere but the basement) |

In the East...Devils just sneak into 8th, edging a surging Leafs team... Boston will have a solid year, same with Pitt, but the Caps will run the show in the regular season... then die off in the play-off's early! Islanders have young talent, with decent goalkeeping...Tavares will spark a surprise season!
West:
1). Detroit Red Wings 2). Vancouver Canucks 3). San Jose Sharks 4). Anaheim Ducks 5). Chicago Blackhawks 6). Columbus Blue Jackets 7). Calgary Flames 8). Minnesota Wild

In the West, same old story with the top 4, pretty much random order...Blackhawks have run into a lot of problems this off season, might hurt them abit. I think the Jackets are looking ahead, same with the Wild, while the Flames are steadily declining!! The Blues will barely miss the playoffs this year... Kings are coming up fast! watch out for them next season!

The preseason doesnt count for anything and I am by no means saying that the Leafs preseason record will represent their regular season record, but last year they were 2-7 this year they are 6-3, losing 3 1 goal games that could have gone either way. The defense is improved, scoring didnt look too bad, and goaltending...well if Toskala rounds into shape or the Monster plays well then they should at least get to 9th and screw Boston out of a good pick.
BTW, I am not impressed with Toskala's play either, but in 07/08 he had a slow start too. I would not write him off just yet. I personally hope he puts up a fight, but loses the job to Gustovsson.

There's gonna be many strange phantom calls in the first month. That's when the bets are placed mostly and refs are paid off with cash and perks.
Then the mob is gonna decide who the "favorites" are. Then you're gonna see some strange goalie plays and odd goals. 25% of the goals are let in on purpose.
Then after the all star break, refs are gonna take over. Strange calls everywhere.
There's a recession but the profits reaped by bookies are as high as ever. Even if you got no money, people are gonna always pay for 2 things. Sex and gambling. It's part of our existence as a species.

The one thing I will say about the standings, is that I think 8th spot will go to either Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa in the East, and either Los Angeles, St.Louis or Edmonton in the West. In the East I chose Toronto, because of my obvious bias, and in the West I went with LA because I believe St.Louis is due for some more bad luck with injuries, and a series of sophomore setbacks; Edmonton will come within a hair, but only because of Pat Quinn's coaching.
As for the awards, most of them are pretty self-explanitory, but I will say this about the Calder: Tavares is going to have one hell of a time winning that award with Doug Weight as his center and a team of useless morons surrounding him. Pat Quinn wins the Jack Adams if the Oil make the playoffs, but Sutter wins if the Flames win their division and oust the Canucks. If neither happens, then I have no idea. It usually goes to either a strong defensive coach, or a coach who brought a bunch of kids to the playoff somehow. So it will go to whoever surprizes... |

If not though, I wouldn't mind the Leafs putting in a waiver claim on Cody McCormick, or Matt Lashoff, who were both reportedly placed on waivers. McCormick could make the roster now, solidifying our 4th line as:
