 | HTR Feature Article: Flames general manager dismisses Phaneuf trade rumour |
John Down, Calgary Herald If you believe the rumour mill, defenceman Dion Phaneuf has asked to be traded and Darryl Sutter is exploring the possibility of swinging a deal for Vinny Lecavalier or Ilya Kovalchuk or John Tavares or (fill in the blank).
All of which is horribly amusing to the Calgary Flames general manager.
“Everything is false,” said Sutter of the rampant speculation surrounding his 24-year-old blueliner. “Whoever makes up that stuff is not doing anything. We’ve worked really hard at building a top young defence in the league and our intention is to keep them, so that’s (rumours) just from somebody who didn’t have anything to do on that day.”
It is, nevertheless, that time of the National Hockey League season when the ol’ rumour mill starts cranking out the blabber. Phaneuf has been a hot topic ever since he was recently overheard having a verbal set-to with coach Brent Sutter.
Toss in the fact the Flames appear relatively deep at defence, that there’s an idea the chief intends to find a suitable winger to play with Jarome Iginla and you’ve got just the kind of fodder that breeds all sorts of wild and woolly speculation.
“There are no rumours, believe me,” reiterated the GM. “I don’t know where that comes from.”
What he does know is he’s satisfied with the play of the Flames through the first half of a demanding schedule. Particularly on the defensive side of things.

Re: Flames general manager dismisses Phaneuf trade rumour (Score: 1) by albertateams on Friday, January 08 (User Info | Send a Message) | I don't put a lot of stock in the Phaneuf rumors as through the course of the season players will have disagreements with coaches and management most of which never reach the media. That being said if the flames did try to move Phaneuf I doubt they would wantor are in a position to take on the contacts of Ilya or Vinny, and I find it hard to believe NYI would part with Tavares, but it is Garth Snow so who knows.
If the flames do trade Phaneuf i would think they would be looking for a top six forward, a top 4 dman, picks/prospects and some cap room to make an additional move at the deadline.

Re: Flames general manager dismisses Phaneuf trade rumour (Score: 1) by KingCanada on Friday, January 08 (User Info | Send a Message) | I think those Phaneuf trade rumors are all BS, doubt it happens...
Nevertheless Calgary will be buyers at the deadline and the Flames definatly need to get Iginla a centerman. However the only ones available are Matt Cullen and an injured Doug Weight...not much appeal to eigther one really.
Whats left are wingers. I always thought that Ponikarovski would be a good fit in Calgary. The Flames are an aggressive cycle/check team and Poni when given those type of linemates (Sundin/Antropob) did an excellent job with that type of game. So I wonder if Sutter would call Burke for him and wat he would offer.
To Calgary: Poni To Toronto: 2nd round pick? Greg Nemisz, mid round pick perhaps?
Might seem like overpayment but Greg Nemisz was pretty unimpressive in the WJC. So watever love Sutter had for him might be a lil deminished at the moment. If hes still a decent prospect now, this might be the time to grab him. |

Re: Flames general manager dismisses Phaneuf trade rumour (Score: 1) by pezzz123 on Friday, January 08 (User Info | Send a Message) | I'd move Phaneuf in a heartbeat if the return is good. Good = top 4 d-man (someone has to take some of Phaneuf's minutes....not Sarich) + a top 6 forward. Or only 1 of them if it provides us with considerable cap space (see Kuba).
Tyutin + Voracek + pick Daley + Eriksson Oduya + Bergfors Girardi + Anisimov + Roszival (buy him out this summer)+ 1rst round pick vs. Phaneuf + Sarich Kuba + 1rst round pick + 2nd round pick Carle + Van Remsdyk Yandle + Muller + pick
I'm just throwing names out there...don't jump on me.

What about something like Spacek, paccioretty/kristo(D'agostini if a 1st is given), Obyrne and a 2nd(maybe a first) for phaneuf

Re: Flames general manager dismisses Phaneuf trade rumour (Score: 1) by cam7777 on Friday, January 08 (User Info | Send a Message) | Calgary is starting to sound like a real shit-show with this latest attack from Theo Fleury himself. Sounds like he must have been pretty irritated by the state of things during his time with the club at the start of the season. You have to think that a guy like Theo probably knows a thing or two about a dressing room, and organizational competence.
And the man has a point. Everyone loves Craig Conroy, but c'mon, what has he done? And frig, the Flames are currently the Maple Leafs of about 10 years ago. Solid goaltending (Kipper/Joseph), and one stud that has no one to play with (Sundin/Iginla), plus a bunch of solid role playing wingers (Bourque/Moss/Glencross/Dawes vs. Tucker/Mogilny/Antropov/Domi).
I tend to agree with Theo here - get Iginla a play-making center! And for Chrissake, instead of shunning Theo, they should tell him they've changed their minds, and he has a month to get back into game shape, and he can be on the club for the playoff run. Otherwise, I fear Theo is right, and the Flames will once again stink up the joint in the first round, and be golfing with the Maple Leafs. |
