 | Phaneuf Run out of town? |
The Toronto Sun is reporting A candid Olli Jokinen suggests Dion Phaneuf may have been railroaded out of Calgary because of the loathing of disgruntled Flames supporters.
Speaking just minutes after he had made his New York Rangers home debut Thursday night, Jokinen strongly rejected the notion that Phaneuf was shipped to Toronto last Sunday because he was a cancer in the Flames dressing room.
"No, no, no. Not at all. He's a great teammate," Jokinen said after the Rangers' 6-5 loss to the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden.
Okay, then why did general manager Darryl Sutter trade the young defenceman?
"The biggest thing is, (Phaneuf) wasn't accepted by the Calgary fans, even though he was once a Norris Trophy candidate," Jokinen said.
With reports circulating from Alberta that Phaneuf was at loggerheads with various Flames players, Jokinen was asked if he would ever have a problem playing on the same team as Phaneuf again.
"Not at all. I'd welcome it," he said. "I would go to war with that guy any time. I would go to dinner with that guy any time.
"Yes, he's very intense. He gets that angry, mean look on his face that people take the wrong way. But what's wrong with wanting to win?"
Jokinen's comments came on the same day that an entry in the forum link of calgarypuck.com, a Calgary-based website, suggested that Flames captain Jarome Iginla took exception to an alleged stick-breaking, obscenity-laced tirade by Phaneuf after a practice a couple of weeks ago, which eventually led to a fight.
The entry added that an Edmonton-based radio station, the Team 1260, made reference to the incident.
For his part, Jokinen, who also was a victim of the Flames house-cleaning when he was dealt to the Rangers this week, had nothing but good things to say about Phaneuf.
"I'm looking forward to when we play him," said Jokinen, who scored his first goal as a Ranger in the losing cause. "I know I'll have to keep my head up.
"Maybe I'll take him out," he joked.
As for why the Flames traded him, too, Jokinen was analytical.
"In a town like Calgary, when you are making $5 million US a year, working hard just isn't enough. You have to put up the numbers. And I didn't," he said. "I understand that."

Always been a Jokinen fan seeing as how weak the UFA pool is he could be a nice short term pickup for the Leafs. Say 2y,6m? Ship Grabo out. |

Re: Phaneuf Run out of town? (Score: 1) by reinjosh on Friday, February 05 (User Info | Send a Message) | When an Edmonton based radio station is referencing the incident you can damn well be sure that it holds little validity if any at all. It would be the same if a Montreal station reported on in-fighting in the Leaf locker room.
I think this was more based on Phaneuf's attitude. Very much like Carey Price last season, he just kind of expected the playing time. Then bringing in a guy like Bouwmeester who is being brought in to supplant your time and position, it makes things worse. Phaneuf is very much the type of player who needs to be the man. The whole going into the changing room at his first practice and turning on the music sort of proves it. It was time for the Flames to move him, had they waited longer his price would have dropped further. The time came for him to be moved and it was mutually beneficial for all partied involved.

which i have mix reaction to......
Kaberle is the most deserving. He is the teams best player, one of the most experienced, was brought up in the Leafs system, the longest current Leafs, is the most loyal etc..... though he will likely be traded in the offseason (sadly)

Phaneuf is Captain Material and he would make a great one in my opinion. I dont think his play fell off like everybody is reporting . I think he played the same today as he did the norris canidate year. His numbers dont show as good but he is on pace to get around 15-18 goals again .. he only had 17 when he was nominated for it. His hitting is top notch best in the nhl for a D man. Calargy has to be the dumbest franchise going to do all they did the did this year .. Cutting Fleury who was very well capable of playing a regular shit in the nhl .. trading phaneuf for garbage and shipping out Olli and prust for higgins 6g and 3.0 mill of Ales Kotalik for the next 3 years. awfull nuff said |

Re: Phaneuf Run out of town? (Score: 1) by FlamingHomer on Saturday, February 06 (User Info | Send a Message) | It will be interesting to see how long the honeymoon lasts. I sincerely hope this move is good for Dion but if he plays anything like he did in Calgary, Leaf fans will want to trade him back. There will likely be a division of opinions on his play as there was in Calgary. If you focus on the Phaneuf "with the puck" he's as good as any defenseman in the league. If you focus on the Phaneuf "without the puck" he's as bad as it gets. Getting back to the main topic, Darryl Sutter could care less what fans think of a certain player in regards to trading them. He'd traded some very popular players and.....he traded Dion.
