Jim Matheson, Edmonton Journal Which goalie do you think the Edmonton Oilers will give up this summer -- Jeff Deslauriers or Devan Dubnyk?
Philip Chin
A: Tough question. Deslauriers has played 46 games and given up two or fewer goals in 21 of them. He's acrobatic, emotional and doesn't give up on shots. Dubnyk is younger and has played only 18 games. While he's got athletic ability, he doesn't appear as Gumby-like in net. He looks calmer, at least on the surface. He stands up and makes the saves. Both kids are big, which is what you like in goalies. If you ask pro scouts, both have the potential to be NHLers, for sure. I wish I could say which way the Oilers are going to go on Deslauriers and Dubnyk. I'm not sure they know yet, until they talk about it after the season ends. Both are Group 2 free agents, so they can't walk away, but both have to clear waivers to be sent back to the minors in the fall when Nikolai Khabibulin presumably is healthy again. Some team will take either one off waivers. I'd say a trade is in order.
Q: Do you see a Sheldon Souray trade coming? The blue-line is pretty thin now, but the Oilers have some promising young players like Smid, Peckham, Chorney, Petry and Motin.
Ranjith
A: The NHL team that sorely needs Souray is Dallas. The Stars have nobody on their back-end who can really fire the puck. They are playing Stephane Robidas and Brad Richards as their top power-play defence pair and have Matt Niskanen, who has a popgun shot, in their second pairing. Robidas is a heart-and-soul guy, but they have him doing too many things, playing too many minutes. A Sourayfor-Mike-Ribeiro trade has been floated because they both make about $5 million. Ribeiro is exactly a $5-million salary cap hit for the next three years, while Souray has a $5.4M cap hit for two more years. The Stars may want to play Jamie Benn as their No. 2 centre if they can re-sign Richards, who is an unrestricted free agent after next season. If the Oilers take centre Tyler Seguin with their top draft pick this June, why would they want Ribeiro? Lots of teams are looking for frontline, offensive centres though, so the Stars shouldn't have any trouble trading Ribeiro. How about Ribeiro in Nashville?
