Burke wants back in
Surrounded by beeping slot machines, busy blackjack tables and roulette wheels, Brian Burke admitted he’s tempted to gamble his way back into the first round of Friday’s National Hockey League draft.
But the general manager of the Maple Leafs is not ready to blindly roll the dice, certainly with his main bargaining chip Tomas Kaberle , in what would be interpreted as a panic attack in the wake of the Phil Kessel trade. Speaking to Toronto reporters at a diner before watching the NHL awards at the Palms Hotel, Burke said the trade offers he’s getting — and there have been a lot — are not specific to what happens in Los Angeles this weekend.
“I’ve turned down a late first-round pick for a player on my team already,” Burke said, though he was vague whether it was Kaberle or Luke Schenn , whose name was also put forward by another team. “We’re at double digits in terms of teams who have made offers or expressed interest. There’s been lots of activity.”
But so far the Leafs have not found the right partner. It’s believed they kicked the tires on Florida’s Nathan Horton before he went to Boston and were buzzing around the Blackhawks before their tentative big deal last night that sent Cup champions Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and Akim Aliu to Atlanta for a first and second-round pick, prospect Jeremy Morin and forward Marty Reasoner.
Rather than move up from the 62nd overall selection, where they are currently marooned after giving up a first and second in this year in the Kessel trade, Burke says Kaberle could be kept in reserve for a scoring winger and if that doesn’t happen during the long-serving Leaf’s summer trade window, he will keep the Czech and maybe re-visit a contract extension.
“We’re talking about a good player at a good wage and I like our defence as it stands,” Burke said. “It would have to be something where we pick up a good forward.”
Putting two and two together after the Scott Niedermayer retirement, many have forecasted Burke will dangle Kaberle to the Ducks to try to get Bobby Ryan, whom he drafted second overall in 2005.
“I have not had meaningful discussions with (Anaheim GM) Bob Murray about any player on my roster or his, certainly not Ryan.”
“I have no intention of trading certain players; I also tell them if someone offers me 10 first-round picks, you’re on a plane. But I was asked an hour ago if I’d trade Luke and I said no.”

Ducks keen on Kabby?
Tomas Kaberle could be going to Disneyland.
With speculation shifting into high gear Wednesday, there’s talk the Maple Leafs could send the veteran defenceman to the Anaheim Ducks.
While there’s plenty of interest in Kaberle the Ducks are believed to be a serious contender after losing veteran Scott Niedermayer to retirement Tuesday.
Extend contract
Making $4.25 million US in the last year of his contract, Kaberle , 32, a 12-year veteran, had seven goals and 42 assists last season with the Leafs. His contract will likely be extended by the team which acquires him.
“The Ducks are going to need that kind of player in the back end,” said one league executive. “There could be a pretty good fit there for the Leafs.”
The Ducks could hold the key to what Toronto really wants: They have the No. 12 and No. 29 selections.

Re: Burke wants first rounds picks, Kaberle to Anaheim rumor heats up (Score: 1) by glotz_99 (gha@yahoo.co) on Thursday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | If the Ducks are shopping for a offensive d-man now that Neidermayer is gone, You've got to think Kaberle would be their best option.
How about:
Thomas Kaberle, Mikhal Grabovski, minor league player (Hayes, Mitchell etc.) for Bobby Ryan and Todd Marchant (salary dump)
Toronto takes on about an extra 1 million in cap space, Anaheim get a veteran puck moving d-man and a 20 goal forward, but give up Ryan who they are having trouble signing.
I'm sure someone is going to say the Ducks could get an offer sheet and get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for him, but they are pretty weak on the back end and could use some help with Visnovsky as their only veteran defenceman.

Re: Burke wants first rounds picks, Kaberle to Anaheim rumor heats up (Score: 1) by nordiques100 on Thursday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | Phil Mickelson aka Darren Dreger from TSN is reporting 5 teams have put in offers for Kaberle. None of them are enough though to accept.
I am guessing some of them are coming from the teams with blueline needs but not much to offer in terms of immediate help for the Leafs: New Jersey, Anaheim, Pittsburgh, perhaps the Isles who have been mentioned or Tampa.
I see Buffalo in this, but I see Burke wanting a ton from trading within the division.
I dont think Boston is one of the teams. I think they need to move Ryder and/or Sturm so that they have enough cap space to fit in Kaberle, plus qualify their key free agents.

This kid's got real potential, but needs a little bit of time. Dont think the Leafs would want to wait though, and are looking for an immediate impact player.... |

Re: Burke wants first rounds picks, Kaberle to Anaheim rumor heats up (Score: 1) by leafmeister (ottawasenators@willneverwinthecup.com) on Thursday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | Here are my guesses for the alleged "five offers", and the tweaking it will take.
Anaheim offers: Lupul, 29th overall Burke wants: Lupul, 12th overall, 2nd or Lupul, 29th overall, Kyle Gardiner
I think with enough pushing, Anaheim would accept that.
Tampa Bay offers: Ryan Malone, 2nd Burke wants: Malone, 6th overall
Not gonna happen.
Vancouver offers: Mason Raymond, 25th overall Burke wants: Cody Hodgeson
It makes sense that Vancouver would be willing to move Hodgeson, given the fact that they have their top two centers locked down for a long time, but they would still be reluctant to move him.
St. Louis offers: Patrick Berglund, 14th overall Burke wants: David Backes, 14th overall
The either would make me happy.
Washington offers: Brooks Laich, 26th overall Burke wants: Laich, Alzner, 26th overall
Pretty much the deal that was offered at the deadline.

Re: Burke wants first rounds picks, Kaberle to Anaheim rumor heats up (Score: 1) by Kev_Leafs on Thursday, June 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | I read of a proposed trade from a totally non-reputable source (keep that in mind), the deal:
Ana: Kaberle + Kadri
Tor: Ryan + (Burke wants a 1st round pick back)
Now, I wouldn't want to trade Kadri away as he's a good prospect, but we traded away three picks to get Kessel - roughly the equivalent of Ryan. Kaberle should fetch at least a 1st round pick and more. Kadri is a high 1st from last year. So the value of two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick needed to land Kessel is there in this proposed deal to land Ryan.
But it would be really hard to trade away three 1st round picks in a row (especially with Kadri & this year's #2 being high picks), so that's why I see Burke arguing for that 1st round pick (likely the 29th overall though I'm sure he'd gun for the 12th).
Anaheim would get the defencemen they need to replace Niedermayer, but with Kaberle being UFA next year he could be gone, so they would also get Kadri - a less skilled but still projected to be a good player with another 3 years on his ELC - crucial to the money conscious team.
Leafs would likely then sign Ryan to the same deal that Kessel has. Leafs would have two young 30+ goal scorers on the wing; neither of whom takes a massive chunk of the cap, which would maintain their flexibility under the cap.
I think both teams would be getting want they want and they would both feel like they could be giving up too much for what they'd be getting back. To me, that's the recipe for a trade that might actually happen.
