Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

Rangers could trade up or down in draft

The Rangers last picked 10th in the NHL draft in 2001 and their selection of goalie Dan Blackburn that year provides a cautionary tale about the arbitrary nature of developing prospects.

Considered Mike Richter’s heir apparent, Blackburn, at 18 years and 143 days, became the fifth-youngest goalie to play in an NHL game on Oct. 10, 2001, eventually starting 17 straight games that season after Richter suffered a concussion. However, nerve damage to his shoulder forced Blackburn into retirement by 2005.

The NHL conducts its first round tonight in Los Angeles — with the remaining six rounds Saturday — and the Rangers own their highest pick since taking goalie Al Montoya with the sixth selection in 2004. Montoya, slow to develop, is in the Coyotes’ organization.

"The best way to characterize it is it may not be deep in real top-end players but it’s very deep in players who will end up playing in the NHL," said Rangers director of player personnel Gordie Clark, who will oversee his third draft for the team.

"I’d say there are two guys clearly better than everybody else," added Clark, referring to consensus 1 and 1A selections left wing Taylor Hall and center Tyler Seguin. "There’s another 10 guys who you could probably throw a blanket over."

The Rangers are open to trading up or down, depending on how the first few picks go. Clark said the Rangers have several "Rated A" players and, if they are gone, will draft based on need.

This year, the need is center, where the team was thin at the NHL level and with Hartford (AHL).

"We’ve done a lot of homework on centers this year," Clark said. "We don’t want that to happen again."

Team drafting plan to deal Marc Savard, Tim Thomas

If the Bruins have their way, they will fly home from NHL draft weekend not just with a future superstar in Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall and a slew of other young draftees - but also without top center Marc Savard and erstwhile No. 1 goaltender Tim Thomas .

The Bruins are trying to engineer blockbuster deals for both veteran stars, according to a well-placed league source.

A trade of the 36-year-old Thomas hardly would be a shocker. The 2008-09 Vezina Trophy winner lost his job this season to youngster Tuukka Rask, and it’s hard to imagine him taking it back.

Thomas dealt admirably with his plight but might be less willing to continue being a good soldier if faced with a full season of backup duty. In addition, the B’s certainly don’t want to pay a No. 2 goalie the $5 million Thomas is due each of the next three years.

Thomas certainly would waive his no-trade clause to seek a No. 1 job elsewhere. TSN reported yesterday that general manager Peter Chiarelli gave Thomas’s agent, Bill Zito, permission to try and line up a trade.

Three teams expressed interest in Thomas before the NHL trade deadline this season. Finding a taker now may be more difficult with several proven goalies, including Evgeni Nabokov, Marty Turco, Vesa Toskala and Dan Ellis, available through free agency.

Volchenkov and Ottawa close to deal?

It seems from a few sources that Anton Volchenkov camp and Bryan Murray are starting to get within range for a contract for Anton Volchenkov. Murray has been known to sign players last minute before they go on the market. Last notable player for this to happen to was Chris Kelly when he actually signed the contract during the nhl draft as teams we picking.

Anton Volchenkov have brought their price tag down slightly in the range where Murray could possible be able to sign him, but it comes again to the long term deal now. Volchenkov wants a 5-6 year deal, where Ottawa was looking more to a 2-3 year deal. It is said that Murray and Volchenkov could meet around 3.3-3.7 mil a season for a cap hit, but Murray I think is not going to commit to that for 6 or 7 seasons though

The Ducks have to take Fowler. They just have to. Teams will seriously regret not taking him.

What a round by Anaheim. You could tell that they couldn't believe their luck for both picks.

The Bruins took my guy and  I couldn't be happier. Still I felt a little envious of the Panthers right after. Strap the C"" on Gudbranson right away. Off the charts intangibles.

Bold move by Stevie Y. I thought for sure Gormley would go to the Lightning. Looks like he's swinging for the fences on his first pick.

I like Carolina taking Skinner but not with those two defensemen on the board.

Dallas' pick was awful. Nothing against Campbell but how do you pass on Fowler and Gormley when it looked like it would be tough to land even Forbort going into the draft? They definitely need defense.

IMO, Boston got the better of the two top guys. Hall does look like a special player, but I think Seguin will have a longer, less flashy, but more consistent career. Once Hall hits 30 I think the injuries will start to pile up, possibly before that.

I dont know how good Seguin will be, but its a safe bet that he will at very least be a 2nd line center.

For me, the biggest winner was Anaheim. They get a top 5 prospect with the 12, and arguably  a top 15 with the 29.

Carolina did welll. I see some Zach Parise in Skinner.

Biggest loser is without a doubt NYR. I hated that pick so much I cannot put it into words. If they wanted defense, Gormley and Fowler were available, if they needed McIlrath that much they could have probably traded down, given who they traded for, I am sure Ottawa would have loved a crack at Fowler or Gormley.

I wasnt to fond of the Columbus pick either. I thought they should have gone for Fowler. Although, maybe since they passed on the puck mover, they feel they have a shot at Kaberle? Maybe I am reaching.

The Ottawa trade was okay. I thought they should have kept the pick and gone with Etem.
