• Why hasn't first-line Ducks winger Bobby Ryan accepted the Ducks' five-year, $25 million offer?
Ryan already has said he's not worth more than linemates Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, both of whom earn an average of $5.3 million a year, so what's the hold-up?
Is Ryan's agent trying get another team to make a bigger offer to the restricted free agent, forcing the Ducks to match? My guess is Ryan believes he'll be worth more than $5 million in the final years of the contract, so he would prefer to sign for, say, only three years.
It would be interesting, however, if the Kings presented Ryan with an offer sheet worth more than $25 million. That would intensify an already heated rivalry.
• Ducks GM Bob Murray wants to acquire at least one more experienced, top-four defenseman before training camp, and the latest target is Vancouver's Kevin Bieksa, who has one year left on a contract that will pay him $3.75 million this season.
Bieksa formerly played for the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League when Randy Carlyle was the coach there, so there is familiarity.
San Jose and Columbus reportedly are interested in Bieksa, too.
• The Kings have had at least three serious face-to-face negotiations with free agent winger Ilya Kovalchuk and his agent, but he hasn't been satisfied with any of the proposals.
The N.Y. Post reported the Kings' original offer was a 12-year deal averaging $5.3 million. Kovalchuck reportedly wants a $10-year, $100 million contract. That's a big gap to bridge.
But the King might still have the upper hand if it's true that Kovalchuk doesn't like living and playing in New Jersey. Maybe that's why the Kings are waiting him out.
• There also are Angels trade rumors floating around, as the July 31 interleague deadline approaches.
Most provocative, according to FoxSports.com, is the Angels' interest in Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee (.239, 11 HRs, 38 RBIs before the All-Star break).
