 | Burke hoping to land a big one |
In a week’s time, if Leafs GM Brian Burke starts talking about the big one that got away, it will have more to do with fishing than Ilya Kovalchuk or Simon Gagne. While two big names made big news on Monday, the Maple Leafs put a Gone Fishin’ sign on Burke’s office door while the GM takes his annual summer fishing trip. He was in Vancouver, heading off for his week with friends, including top assistant Dave Nonis, on Tuesday morning. Assistant GM Dave Poulin is in charge of the club.
But before casting a rod, Burke addressed the major issue facing the team — the future of defenceman Tomas Kaberle, and it’s officially status quo while he trolls for a better offer.
“The number of offers are up to six but we’re not in a position where we think any of them are good enough,” said Burke. “We’re still in a holding pattern.”
The Leafs have until Aug. 15 to trade Kaberle before his no-trade clause kicks back in. The all-star defenceman is heading into the final year of a contract that pays him $4.25 million (all figures U.S.).

Re: Burke hoping to land a big one (Score: 1) by leafmeister (ottawasenators@willneverwinthecup.com) on Tuesday, July 20 (User Info | Send a Message) | Okay. I am just going to start assuming Kaberle is never going to be moved. If the deals are no good now I dont see any reason why they would improve. Now, lets have a look at the team as it stands.
Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel - We are going to rely on this line to keep up the late season pace. If only Kessel shows up to play then we are in trouble.
Caputi-Kadri-Versteeg - Has potential, Kadri and Versteeg should be good for 40-50 points. Caputi is a wild card, but given the fact he is playing with good talent, 40 points is by no means out of the question.
Sjostrom-Grabovski-Armstrong- A decent checking line. Grabovski has offensive ability, as does Armstrong in a different way. Sjostrom is a pure checker though. If he could get 10 goals I would be more than happy.
Orr-Mitchell-Brown - Meh.
Phaneuf-Beauchemin - It was okay last year.
Kaberle-Komisarek - This should be good, as long as Komisarek doesnt struggle again.
Schenn-Gunnarrson - I dont want to see Schenn's ice time cut again, so maybe he can be put on Phaneuf's pairing, but he and Gunnarrson would make one of the best #5-6 pairing in the league.
Lebda
Gustovsson Giguere
I would predict a 9th or 10th finish for that team, so long as the goalies show up, but if they were to make one more signing, say...Alex Frolov, at a reasonable price and they suddenly have a decent top 6.
Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel Frolov-Kadri-Versteeg Caputi-Grabovski-Armstrong Orr-Mitchell-Sjostrom Brown
Phaneuf-Beauchemin Kaberle-Komisarek Schenn-Gunnarrson Lebda
Giguere Gustovsson
They would have to bury Finger to afford Frolov, but it could be done.

or just keep Kaberle because he is honestly amazing, and I wouldn't mind at all if we kept him. |

I would litteraly have a wet dream if somehow someway that Burke landed Rick Nash.
Before people call me dumb or that i'm out of my mind. I relize this is just me dreaming.
Possibly... Kaberle, Hanson, 1st in 2011-2012.
Just saying.. |

"Brian Burke is in no rush to move D-man Tomas Kaberle before the August 15th deadline when the player’s no-trade clause kicks back in. Don’t get caught up in the theory that the offers for Kaberle will decrease as we get closer to mid August. We are dealing with a D-man who is considered a difference maker and a valuable asset. Teams won’t look to play chicken with Burke as they realize there is no other replacement of Kaberle’s ability available. "

Re: Burke hoping to land a big one (Score: 1) by cam7777 on Wednesday, July 21 (User Info | Send a Message) | What do we all make of Eklund's Gaborik to LA, Kovalchuk signs with the Rangers idea? Makes a lot of sense for the Rangers. And you can just see the wheels turning in Slats head. He knows he's going to get un-penalized buyout period once the CBA is renegotiated. So in two years he'll have Redden and Rozsival and Drury off the books (if not sooner), and a young core of Kovalchuk, Staal, Del Zotto, Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, Grachev, Stepan, Kreider, Lundqvist, and whoever he gets back for Gaborik.
I know it's EKlund, but he's been right about an awful lot lately. |

Andrew Ladd and Ben Eager have abritration hearings coming up, and I cant see the Hawks paying around 2.5 to 3.5 million for Ladd and somewhat less for Ben Eager.
What would you think of Burke going after any of these guys if they do become free agents?

Re: Burke hoping to land a big one (Score: 1) by TmLeafan on Thursday, July 22 (User Info | Send a Message) | A little off topic but Kev Leafs mentioning Dale Tallon reminded me of how at the draft the guys on TSN were painting him as some genius/ best GM around and we were witnessing the new Chicago Blackhawks being assembled before our eyes. I just remember thinking it was complete BS, and he is an average GM who lucked out and drafted Kane and Toews. Obviously Keith and Seabrook were good draft picks but that could be mostly attributed to scouting and not him. Now he did assemble a Cup Champion I will give him the credit for that but I feel like the signings of Campbell and Huet screwed them big time and negated a lot of the good work that he did. Not to mention the qualifying offer screw up.
Just wondering if anybody else watching the draft on TSN noticed that and their thoughts on the whole thing. |

Re: Burke hoping to land a big one (Score: 1) by TheLeafNation91 on Thursday, July 22 (User Info | Send a Message) | I think a darkhorse team for Kaberle is Atlanta...
They have some great quality forwards (Antropov, Kane, Bergfors, Byfuglien, Little, Ladd, Eager, Peverley) Some good prospects in Burmistrov as well
Also, a very underated defence (Hainsey, Bogosian, Oduya, Sopel, Enstrom)
FINALLY...A solid duo with an amazing youngster in Pavelec, and a good underrated veteran in Mason
They could use a very good puck-mover with Bogosian and create a great defence...
The only forward I see Burke interested in though would be Little, as Kane is untouchable...Agreed? |
