Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

HTR Feature Article: Canadiens are latest name to be cranked out in Bieksa rumour mill

Canadiens blankAnother day, another Kevin Bieksa rumour.

The latest twist in Twitter-land is that the Montreal Canadiens covet the Vancouver Canucks defenceman in exchange for 2010 first-round draft choice Jarred Tinordi. The rumour has some legs because the Canucks had interest in the 6-foot-5 blueliner, who's the son of former NHL defenceman Mark Tinordi. He had nine points and 68 penalty minutes with the U.S. National Team Development Program last season and a was a member of the U.S. team that won the 2010 under-18 world title. Tinordi is projected as a tough, top-four defenceman and that's why the Canadiens traded up to take him 22nd overall last month.

However, the Habs have other problems that would make such a trade tough to digest.
For starters, the Canadiens have four defencemen who are 30 years of age or older, have five contracts on the back end expiring after next season and still need to flush out their roster with 20 players signed for $55 million US. Taking on Bieksa's remaining $3.75 million would be a stretch and so would giving up Tinordi with few bonafide NHL prospects in the franchise fold.
The Canucks have their own cap issues. They have 23 players signed, but are $358,333 over the $59.4 million ceiling and have yet to add unsigned restricted free agents Mason Raymond and Jannik Hansen and rookie Cody Hodgson to the payroll.

I don't see how Bieksa fits into the Canadiens. I don't really get to see many of their games but they always seemed like a mobile counter attack team to me (with a deadly PP) kinda in the same mold as Buffalo.
Bieksa doesn't fit that game in my opinion. They already have a big defender in Gill, the difference being Gill shows up for the playoffs.
Although sometimes I get the feeling Gainy just throws teams together without thought of a system, and is lucky Martin is a fine coach.

This doesn't make much sense from a cap point of view.  The Canucks are likely to trade with a team that has cap space and a young prospect they'd like.

I hope this doesn't happen.  If it does I'll refer to this post as the start point for the fire PG movement.

One team that Bieksa could be a good fit is with the St Louis Blues - though the defense looks pretty good with Pieterangelo coming up in the system and a very under-rated Roman Polak on the backend due a big raise next season.

Bieksa might have to suck it up and enjoy wearing Islanders Orange and Blue?

I think the Habs should just flip Hamrlik to the Oilers for Souray.

Both return to places they once were, and liked.

Souray would give them another big gun at the point and toughness.

Hamrlik has some veteran savvy and probably a better fit for that young oiler team than Souray.

I think they need to as well get rid of A Kostitsyn and try and sign Frolov.

Frolov and Cammellari were really good together in LA. throw in Souray with Markov or Subban on the points and you have a really good group of players to make up what usually is a good PP.

Anyone think Vancouver might trade both Bieksa and Mason Raymond? They should realize they have a lot of players in their system who play similar to Raymond (Schroeder, Rotin, Hodgson, all of whom are high end NHL prospects), and you could add a lot of depth by trading him.

To Vancouver: Andrew Ladd, Eric O'Dell, Chris Thorburn, 3rd rounder
To Atalnta: Mason Raymond, Andrew Alberts

I know the Thrashers just traded for Andrew Ladd, but doesn't mean he couldn't be in play. The Thrashers have only one forward with elite scoring potential (Evander Kane), and know Andrew Ladd's potential probably reaches only around 20 goals a year. He brings lots of other qualities to the table, but Atlanta needs elite scoring now more then elite size. Mason Raymond has 30+ goal potential. He would instantly be a 1st line player in Atlanta. Andrew Alberts gives them depth - they only have 5 defensemen signed I believe, and his cap hit is off the books for Vancouver. Eric O'Dell could become a 4th line center a year from now in Vancouver. Chris Thorburn offers a lot as a 4th line winger, and just adds more size to this Vancouver team.

To Anaheim: Kevin Bieksa, Shane O'Brien
To Vancouver: Todd Marchant, Sheldon Brookbank, Jake Gardiner, 2nd rounder

Afraid that they may have to let Wisniewski walk after arbitrartion, and have only two real quality NHL defensemen on the roster, the Ducks get desperate and move their top prospect knowing he can't make an impact to their team for another 2 years, and that this defense needs help now. The Ducks gets a decent top 4 defender in Bieksa, and one with top 4 upside in O'Brien. The Canucks get their 4th line center they need. Marchant is relieble in the circle and plays good defensive hockey and that's really all Vancouver needs from it's 4th line center. The Canucks get another right hand shot on defense too which they need (only 1 of their top 8 blueliners right now are right handed), Brookbank would be very solid as a #6 d man (he was #4 on the depth chart in Anaheim most of last year). Very cheap too for another two seasons. The real prize of the deal is Jake Gardiner though. With guys like Sami Salo, and Christian Ehrhoff set to become free agents next summer it seems that Vancouver could use a replacement for one of the two. Like I said, Jake Gardiner probably won't be in the NHL for another two years, but he has big upside as an offensive defensemen.

Sign Raffi Torres for 2 years, 1.4 million per year.
Sign Mike Weaver for 1 year, 700k

Look at this lineup all of a sudden.

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Ladd - Kesler - Samuelsson
Torres - Malhotra - Hodgson
Hansen - Marchant - Thorburn/Oreskovich
extras: Thorburn/Oreskovich, Rypien, Tambellini

Ehrhoff - Hamhuis
Salo - Ballard
Brookbank - Edler
extras: Rome, Weaver

Luongo
Schneider

That's the best team in the NHL right their. They have everything. Five players with 30 goal potential this season, physical players that can score (Ladd, Torres, Malhotra), players that can take faceoffs (Marchant, Kesler, and Malhotra who's the best in the NHL since the lockout), players with potential to play bigger roles then they even need to (Hodgson, Hansen, maybe even Jordan Schroeder), deep defense (and one that now isn't overly right handed), and arguably the best goaltending tandem in the league. Also they have cap space to make moves if they must. I don't see a single flaw with that team. Plus the team made major acquisitions to the prospect pool.

I think some of these arbitration awards are pretty high Macarthur 2.4 million is  really high.

What are Wheeler, Moulson, Flieschmann, Stralman, White, Niemi, Raymond, Ladd, Wisniewski, Regin and Brule going to get?

The GM's (particularly the ones up against the cap) have to cringe when they see how this is trending so far.

Wheeler, Moulson, Flieschmann, White, Raymond, Ladd and Niemi will all be 2.5-3.5 million dollar awards if this continues. If Wheeler gets over 3 do the Bruins let him walk, same with Raymond. I might be wrong on this but if they choose not to accept the arbitrators award I think they become free agents.

The Halak-Price situation has been so mismanaged. If Price had a mind for it he could really take Gauthier to the cleaners. If I were him I would demand Halak like money. Montreal has zero leverage. Then he could either vastly over pay him or pay him for a reduced value. That is why you sign Price before you trade Halak. Or better yet, sign Halak, and either give Price another chance to prove himself at a reduced rate. Or trade Price and go with the proven, fan favorite who knows how to deal with the Montreal fans.
