HTR Feature Article: What Will Happen With Tomas Kaberle?

Maple Leafs blankglotz_99 writes "As Brian Burke returns home from his fishing trip, talks could once again commence on the possible moving of Tomas Kaberle.

Here are some other various sources on Kaberle:

"The Sharks are the team to beat. The Leafs are aiming for Ryan Clowe as their target"

"The Sharks aren't offering Clowe yet, but Brian does believe he could get Clowe if he just were to get some kind of bidding war going."

"The Blue Jackets have had discussions on and off for the better part of two years. The latest name is Brassard, which may be the most upside potential out there for the Leaf player."

"The Flyers could send Coburn and Van Riemsdyk to Toronto for Kaberle and a top prospect."

"The Capitals are involved, but the Leafs have no interest in Semin as a starting point for talks. There may be some other options."

"The Kings have been rumored to be kicking some tires, Jack Johnson could be trade bait or another one of their many good prospects

"The Sabres would consider Stafford and a young D prospect. The Leafs would rather have Derek Roy."

What do you all think will happen? "

To be quite honest as good as Kaberle is, I don't think anybody is going to be happy with the return on this trade if it does happen.

As Leaf fans, we forget that the times when a return on Kaberle could have been maximized have come and gone.  Players in the last year of their deals don't fetch much.  If he goes somewhere, I'm thinking it'll be a team that nobody has mentioned yet, and we will be lucky to receive what would be considered a lower end top 6 forward.

Although we now have many dollars tied up in the back end, for the success of the Leafs this season i'd say keep him.  If at the end of the season he wishes to test the free agent market then so be it.  If we're going to get nothing substantial for him anyways, i see nothing wrong with forcing him to have a great contract year with our team, and hopefully get us into the playoffs.

I don't think anyone is really grasping the importance of trading Kaberle! If he doesn't sign with Toronto by Aug. 15th, he's gone and for NOTHING...That would be a great conclusion to the Muskoka five. Sundin, McCabe, Kubina, Tucker, and Kaberle...For NOTHING.

Why you may ask??? Kaberle

A) He will demand money that TORONTO cannot give him. Even with burying finger and trying to trade Grabovski, their is more need at forward then their is at D. Toronto cannot waist vaulable cap space on a player that they already have 8 basically of.

B) Toronto is realistically...Not going to contend for a cup until 2-3 years down the road...Which makes Kaberle 35 years old and PAST his prime. Were gonna have a huge contract, with a declining player, in a team where our younger talent needs to be signed. With Phaneuf and other d-men still on the books. That really sounds like the HAMRLIK situation now?? And it's bad enough Kaberle cannot play well in his own end.

So theres my points...We cannot make Montreals mistakes!!! It's too foolish. I can't wait until he stays and Toronto gets nothing in return, with many Leaf fans crying like they did with Sundin? And I'll laugh and say...You should of traded him when you had the chance...

Clowe is a good power forward who can also score. I don't think Burke will pass that up if it's offered.

By the way, I don't believe that Semin rumor as it's stated in the article.

Ha, I love how varied the potential returns are.  On the one hand, you have Washington supposedly willing to get rid of Semin, a 40 goal scoring winger, and on the other hand, you have the Sabres MAYBE being willing to part with Drew Stafford.  What a joke.  On what planet is Stafford for Kaberle even remotely fair?  Christ, Sabres always want something for nothing.

So many of these rumors come from bloggers who are fans of other teams.  Like the LA one for instance - of course they wouldn't mind moving Johnson, who is an enormous pile of turds (a career minus 57 already), or maybe one of their good prosepcts.  LA has some of the most over-rated prospects in the league.  Teubert had a hard time making an impresson in the ECHL last year.  He and Hickey are both another 2 years away from making NHL debuts, and further away from making any kind of impact.  Both were off the board selections, and both haven't panned out according to plan, but both continue to receive attention because of their draft ranking.

Brassard wouldn't be a bad return, but it wouldn't be optimal either - how many 2nd line centers can one team house?  VanRiemsdyk would be great, but PHI likely has no need for Kaberle now.  The Capitals have nothing to offer if Burke doesn't want Semin.

Why would the Leafs even consider Clowe when vanRiemsdyk is on the table.
6'3 over 200lb. drafted 2nd overall. Plus he is American (we all know Burke loves his Americans)

had a poor season with very limited ice time on a DEEP Flyers roster. But is young and has much more potential than clowe. If this was on the table - along with Coburn - I would take it!

And like someone said, if Kaberle leaves, we really don't have the NHL dmen ready in the system. Are NHL Dmen afte Kaberle are:
Phaneuf, Komi
Beauch, Schenn
Gunnerson, Lebda

So if Kaberle leaves, we really need to add another NHL Dmen.
Plus, we all know Burke uses 8 Dmen.

I think the flyers trade is WAY better then clowe!

Lastest talk on Kabby is that Boston is offering Mark Stuart and Blake Wheeler. Score, or maybe Jack Johnson makes more sense.

We really need to go back to the well and land a defensemen, we've only traded for or signed about 20 of them in the last five years.

Forget about getting good forwards, that's how winning teams build.

What about Kaberle and Kadri (our only 'top prospect')for Van Riemsdyk and Coburn. Then we give up our only blue chip propect so we can be 8 deep on our backend and have second line winger.  Then we can trade Kessel for Hamhuis and Ballard.  Defense always wins championships.

In the East.....

Montreal and Ottawa - too bitter a rival for BB to trade him there.

Buffalo - Sabres are rivals too, but BB could probably get past that easier than his Canadian rivals. They'd offer Stafford and a D prospect, the Leaf probably want Roy. Doubt that happens.

Boston - Bruins are interested. But they're in cap heck. Probably would still have Savard on the table. May now offer Wheeler + Stuart. Leafs may want more considering divisional rivals. B's need to clean up their cap first though.

Savard, Wheeler and a 1st in 2011 for Kaberle and Hanson.

They'll probably save a good 2 mil the B's will out of all this. That will help. More importantly, Kaberle helps their D big time adding a mobile dimension to offset all their big size back there. Hanson is a decent prospect and will add size and depth up front. Savard gives Toronto that top centre they need while Wheeler is a big winger with skill. Getting a 1st back for the Leafs gives them something to work with in 2011. If to get this done the Leafs have to take on Ryder to get these 3 good assets, I'd do it. BB is great at moving immobile players so i am sure he'd be able to switch Ryder elsewhere.

NYR - no chance as they have Staal to re-sign and are stuck with Roszival and Redden on D

NYI - too early in their rebuild to be chasing players who may leave them in a year.

NJ - rumoured to be heavily interested. Kovalchuk situation needs to clear first. They do need cap space to fit Kovalchuk in so would be hard pressed to even add Kaberle despite a decent price. Probably would offer draft picks and a prospect or two like Josef Jacobsen. But the Leafs want help now and would probably ask for Zajac. Doubt the Devils give up their top line centre. Arnott, Rolston, Elias, Zubrus, their other centres are all over 30. Leafs though if they offered up a prospect, say a Hanson +, with Kaberle they may be able to pry Zajac. If need be, they could help the Devils too take back another contract like a Zubrus or Salvador.

Philly - 8 deep on D, no cap space, probably in good shape now.

Pittsburgh - picked up Martin and Michalek so seem settled on D and need cap space for forwards.

Atlanta - have lots of mobility on D. And while Antropov, Mason and Hainsey signed there, not a hotbed for free agents to go and/or stay.

Florida - pretty settled on their D which will likely give lots of opportunity to the kids like Gudbranson, Ellerby, Robak, Kulikov rather than add a vet who may leave in a year.

Carolina - With the additions of Babchuk and Corvo, they may have solved their lack of mobility and D depth without giving up major assets which they cannot afford.

Tampa - Added Kubina and Clark. Need to use cap to get some forward depth. While they'd love Kaberle's mobility, they dont really have the assets to trade.

Washington - the caps, despite having Mike Green, may have interest. Semin seems like the biggest name they're throwing around. They may feel better at the chances of bringing back Kaberle on a better contract than Semin who may look for home run money. Adding Kaberle would give them another weapon on D, and may open up enough cash to replace Semin with a veteran player. they'd still have players like Fehr, Fleischmann and Laich for scoring depth behind Ovy and Backstrom. The Leafs though may have to offer up more to get Semin as he is an explosive player, capable of 40 goals, point per game and is a game breaker. But probably not that much more considering his UFA status at seasons end.

In the West....

Calgary - No chance, no assets, no cap space.

Colorado - Would probably build a package of prospects to acquire Kaberle but the Leafs may want an established player off their roster. Would the Avs be willing to give that up? hard to say. I would consider Stewart, Duchene, Stastny as players going nowhere. I dont even believe they'd even consider moving Galiardi or O'Reilly. Thus that really takes them out of the running. If none of these players are offered, it would have to be a large package of 4 prospects or something which the Avs may not be prepared to do.

Edmonton - The Oilers would first need to find a home for Souray but a player like Kaberle would be excellent to help move the puck to all those good young forwards. They could offer up a variety of players like Gagner or Cogliano or even Penner. Their only concern is whether he'd stay. Kaberle wants to be in the East. And Edmonton has struggled to keep players around.

Minnesota - The Wild have a pretty good D with Schultz, Zidlicky, Burns, Barker. The need doesnt seem to be there.

Vancouver - they're trying to move Bieska and added Ballard and Hamhuis, a deal with the nucks unlikely.

Chicago - In cap hell. They are going to be too busy fixing that to get kabby.

Columbus - Probably still has interest. they did bring back Stralman but have been interested in Kaberle for a while. They have youth to offer perhaps even Filatov or Brassard. Leafs may have some interest, maybe moreso for a guy like Umberger who has size + scoring ability. Russell isnt a bad player either. Again the concern for the Jackets is the unknown of what Kaberle would do after this season. would he stay? would he want to stay with a team not close to contending? Hence why they've probably balked at moving several young assets.

Detroit - solid veteran D already and no cap space.

Nashville - Good young D and conservative with their cap space.

St Louis - said they'd have not interest in big name players. Kaberle would be a nice fit to help bring along a player like Pietrangelo, help their not so great PP, get the puck to some of their good young forwards. But, what price would they pay? They did use assets already to get Halak and while they may offer up a player like a Perron or Berglund, is that the kind of player Toronto wants? probably not. Berglund is ok, but they'd probably want too much more for the Blues to give up.

Anaheim - the Ducks have interest. the Leafs have interest in Ryan, and that's where the talks end. There is no way the Ducks give up that much without another good young asset coming back and without a guaranteed contract extension to Kaberle.

Dallas - there is interest here. the issue is their ownership situation. The team isnt looking to spend the cap max and is conservatively looking to stay around 45 mil. they also have Richards to worry about next summer too so would they want to deal out 2 big deals at the same time? I think Toronto would have to take back a player like Ribiero and his big deal to help them have the $$ for Richards and be able to keep Kaberle. While he doesnt want to go West, playing for his friend and former teammate Joe Nieuwendyk may help him stay. I think Toronto has interest in Neal but again, would the Stars give him up without a guaranteed extension to kabby? If Toronto adds a youngster or two, while taking back Ribiero, something could get done.

Ribiero, Neal, Woywitka for Kaberle, Hanson, Blacker

The Leafs get a centre for one of their top 2 lines plus a big winger. Neal will add a different dimension on the wing and should fit well with this young team. Ribiero is a playmaker and while small and soft, he can put up points. Woywitka just adds depth. Kaberle gives the Stars the playmaker back on D they've needed since Zubov. He should make a difference as there is lots of skill still left even with no Neal and no Ribiero. Hanson is a big body who may not be as polished as Neal but carrie

Is Lombardi primed to get fleeced?  With the Poni signing it looks like he's offically moving on from the Kovalchuk sweepstakes and pressure from ownership, media and the fanbase remains remains on him to bring in a name.

Now how many big names are left on the trade market?  Savard but he's only willing to go Ottawa or Toronto and Kaberle.  This makes Lombardi a target to pry Schenn from, of course we'd throw in another secondary piece for window dressing.

Much like GMs targeted JFJ when he was in a pressure cooker, Lombardi is getting some heat as his image has taken a hit this off season. I say Burke forgets about the Simmonds soft packages and turns the heat on Lombardi.

Burke has options with Kaberle, Lomdardi doesn't really have options to land another name.

Also I don't think any other team in the league is that interested in B. Schenn, I don't think anyone would offer a decent package to Lombardi for him.

http://kings.nhl.com/

Handzus who is considered a huge flop holds 22% of the vote on a sad list.

It's funny given LA is a team rountinely linked to UFAs and yet they can't seem to land any,  That said they're left with two options to land talent, trade or draft.  Given that they're window is now, is Schenn a better fit than Kaberle?
