HTR Feature Article: Burke up to something?

Maple Leafs blankmojo19 writes "As a blurb at the bottom of the Jamal Mayers to San Jose story on Sportsnet.ca they mention that Brian Burke has cancelled his charity lunch this week in order to fly to Europe "in order to negotiate a deal with a prospective player".

This is most likely going to be another signing similar to the Marcel Mueller signing of a couple weeks ago. However its possible that Burke is negotiating with an NHL player who resides in Europe in the summer. Some notables include Fred Modin, Slava Kozlov, Teemu Selanne, Jere Lehtinen, Ruslan Fedotanko, Miroslav Satan. All of these guys are over 30 (or even 40), and given the way Burke has been building this team I would be pretty surprised if it were one of them.

There are a few under 30, European free agents, Evgeny Artyukhin for example, but this list makes me think that its another prospect Burke is going after.

Some people are saying its Peter Forsberg, but that sounds like internet rumorus to me.

That rumour may have been squashed

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Mike-Augello/FACT-OR-FICTION/120/29609

will be interesting to see what BB does.

11 days to go. I think something gets done.

Teams being bandied about: LA, Boston, Tampa, San Jose, Anaheim, Columbus, Jersey.

Boston and Jersey have some cap issues. But to me, I think the Bruins get the Leafs to take on cash and let the leafs deal with it be it demotions, buyouts etc, and give some decent assets to get Kaberle.  Savard is the obvious name. I think Ryder too is someone whom the Bs throw in. But in return for that, I think the Leafs 1st is in play...getting it back that is. Or maybe one of their prospects like a Colborne or Caron or Hamill.

For Jersey, i think they cant really take anyone on and have to let go of some players for next to nothing.

Anaheim, while they did get Sutton, have a need for an offensive guy....unless they are really ready to give that job to Sbisa or Fowler. Kaberle would be a fine mentor, but again, the Leafs asking price of Ryan may be too high. They'll want one of the Leafs top 3 kids back. I see BB saying no way to that proposal.

LA is interesting because i think they need forwards moreso than Dmen. I think Toronto wants Simmonds or Schenn and Lombardi is going to say no to that. I personally think LA would have done Schenn for Kaberle had they gotten Kovalchuk. I think if they landed Kovy, they would have then started to load up for a big run this year. But since their top acquisition was Pony, me thinks they're not hugely desperate for Kaberle.

I still like the Clowe for Kaberle package with the Sharks.

Tampa is offering Malone i think, but is that enough? 30 year old forward, but not real upside, not much of a star by any means. a solid 25 goal guy but still over 30. at least Clowe is younger and i think more consistent in terms of being physical. also Clowe has a much better contract. I dont think that is a large enough offer and they dont have any of their good kids available.

Columbus probably has some nice assets to offer up the problem though is they ahve the least chance of signing Kaberle long term. I think that puts them out of the running.

I think the guy who said he was going to sign a prospective player was just speculating, but really, would Burke cancel a charity event for Special Olympics to go sign a 35+ player that likely isn't going off the market any time soon, or a prospect who must be unheard of if we don't already have the scoop?

If it was a Marcel Muller type player, there would be no need for Burke to go over there.  Phone calls with agents would suffice, or failing that, Burke could send Nonis or Poulin.  If it was Forsberg, that would be friggin' unreal.  My guess though, is that Burke has a deal on the table for Kaberle that has knocked his socks off, but he requires Tomas to agree to an extension, or at the very least, come to the table on one with the team trading for him.

However, if Burke feels like talking to Forsberg while he's over there, sounds good to me.  It could be a no harm no foul thing.  Forsberg wants to play for one of the teams he's already played for, but if none of them want to take the risk on him this early in the season, the Leafs could do it, and hope for a trade at the deadline.  Worst case scenario, Forsberg is too injured to be a contributor.  Best-case scenario is that he stays relatively healthy and either makes himself a valuable deadline commodity, or helps push the LEafs back into the playoff hunt.

to be clear:

from the article:

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Mike-Augello/RUMORS-ARE-THEY-FACT-OR-FICTION/120/29609

in the section about this trip to Europe:

"There have been numerous reports that the cancellation of a luncheon in support of Special Olympics in Thunder Bay, Ont on Thursday was an indicator of something significant happening in Leaf Land. According to tbnewswatch.com, the “Toronto Maple Leafs general manager was called away on hockey business, and will not be able to make the event.” Speculation ensued that Brian Burke was travelling to Europe to try to sign a player, from the sublime(that he was going over to negotiate an extension with Kaberle) to the ridiculous(that he was going over to try to sign Peter Forsberg).

It has been confirmed by a source that as of yesterday, Burke has not travelled to Europe to sign any player."

the last paragraph/sentence, it says that a source says BB didnt go to bring anyone in. it didnt i guess make it clear whether he did or didnt go to europe.

so, its either to see Kaberle, or to play some links golf.

The leak of the Buffalo deal (Roy and a 1st) has renewed my faith that Burke is weighing some enticing options.  Enough of this Kaberle straight up for Clowe or Simmonds garbage (if Burke settles for this little return he's exposing himself as a size queen and this summer would be cemented as a failure).

The rumor mill has Boston back in, Chiarelli has been crushing on Kaberle for over a year, I'd want our 1st back and Marc Savard.  That way we have insurance in case we have a typical post lockout Leafs season and we're gracious enough to help the Bruins out of their cap woes back taking a bad contract.

I wonder how the Kessel deal would be judged after a deal like that.

Also Burke is in a power position for at least a week (if he waits too much he might get low balled as the 15th looms), Kaberle is the last impact player that is really out there on the market.  I can't imagine all teams are happy with their roster this summer.  There are owenership groups other than MLSE that care about the short term profits and pressure their GMs. Kaberle remains affordable and there isn't really an alternative option for a significant upgrade.

the marc savard thing is the deal I'd be looking at if I was a Leaf fan..... Something like Savard + Colbourne..... or even Savard + Wheeler if boston wanted to dump abit of salary and were hip to that idea....I'd take the chance on Wheeler... and he's the "prototypical" Burke player.....

anyway what im getting at is the deals for Neal Ryan Carter etc etc.... I don't think teams would go for it for a number of obvious reasons and on an already young TO team some good skilled veteran presence would be a great asset....

I'm suprised Burke hasn't jumped all over this, not much risk taking on a 24 yr old kid who had 10 goals and 16 assists last year.

I believe now, no matter what happens, a few Leaf fans will be disappointed.

I would prefer to see Kaberle moved, and i think ultimately he will be. So I am not too worried about him being kept, revoking any trade offers that happen post Aug 15th and then leaving on his own via UFA.

Its a possibility, but i think Burke knows he will be avoiding that by moving him in the next 10 days.

However, i think the return is going to be less than what many are expecting.

There are many who even feel a trade for Ryan Clowe is completely unfair for the Leafs.

That to me, speaks volumes of how dillusional and warped Leaf fans can be.

To me, that is probably the best package the Leafs can get. A player like Clowe or a player comparable to him.

People need to take a step back and open their eyes and really see that if  the Leafs want a player who is a proven top NHLer who isnt age 25 yet, them offering Kaberle is not enough.

Or a proven top centre not yet 30 years old who has both size and skill.

Or a top flight top 6 forward with 30 goal ability...again not over age 30.

Its going to cost Toronto Bozak, Kadri or Schenn to get such high end players.

However, players like Clowe, the Leafs could manage to move Kaberle without any cost of other key assets, especially young ones.

The contract he has is affordable, but its just 1 year left.

The non-guarantee pre-trade of him staying with his new team long term is an issue as well. Every team in the NHL would love to have Kaberle. But, if Kaberle does not want to stay with certain teams, and he happens to get traded to them, its a big risk for those team to sell off a few assets to get him.

I think that is a major point leaf nation is missing or disregarding. Teams are just going to be gunshy to do such a deal where they part with a good young roster player, a prospect and maybe a pick to get him.

Is he worth that based on talent alone? yes. but unfortunately deals nowadays are not based on just talent. See Simon Gagne. See All those Hawk players who were just moved. See Dany Heatley.

The contract situation plays a major part and i think it is playing a major part here in Burke's attempt to maximize a return.

Other teams cap situations are also going to play a part as well. Again, some teams would love to have him but dont have the kind of cap space or flexibility to get something done.

For example the Devils would love to have him, but they're over the cap and need to deal with this Kovalchuk thing that is holding them up completely.

Another example is Boston, who without the bonus cushion are already 5 mil over the cap. They were penalized already last year and thus may not want to be too much over and carry over too many bonuses. They have contracts they'd like to move, but are immobile due to lack of interest (Ryder) or NTCs (Savard).

Leaf Nation may not give a darn about their situation but really, that plays a part. It takes 2 parties to make a trade the last i checked.

at the end of the day, i think BB will make a fine trade that will help Toronto. It could be for that coveted centre, it could be for just another top 6 forward, it could be for the betterment of the future, whatever. I think moving Kaberle will bring something back that will be very good for Toronto.

But i am almost certain there will be major outcry and disappointment over what he gets.

If Burke expects deals to get much better than Roy and a 1st than he will be very disappointed. Roy is a legit top 6 forward, fills our need at center which Burke refuses to admit we have, and gets a potentially high 1st, which they can possibly flip for more assets, or god forbid, keep.

I would bet that this roster makes the playoffs.

Kulemin-Roy-Kessel
Versteeg-Bozak-Kadri
Caputi-Grabovski-Armstrong
Sjostrom-Mitchell-Orr
Brown

Phaneuf-Schenn
Komisarek-Gunnarsson
Beauchemin-Lebda

Giggy
Gustovsson

Is the forward core too small? Yes. But it does not lack skill. Besides, small players can be very effective. If Burke is expecting a package better than a 70 point center and a 1st than he is either a genius who is going to hit a home run, or a lunatic who is way overvaluing Kaberle.

Kaberle for Ryan - a pathetic trade for the Leafs. Ryan is over 20 years old, and only scored 30 plus goals when he should be scoring 40 plus. He is clearly not playing to potential. This unlike Kaberle who was in the top 10 in defense scoring. nuff said.

Kaberle for Clowe, Setogutchi, Pavelski - Kaberle needs to be traded for top liners. All 3 form the Sharks 2nd line. Pathetic. We have the greatest 2nd line players already in Toronto. We need a top liner. Plus, they're chokers. even though they've actually played playoff games in the last 5 years, the Sharks and all their players are chokers. Kaberle as you can clearly see in the last 5 years has never choked in the playoffs.

Kaberle for Simmonds and Schenn - Both are completely unproven unknowns. While the "unknown" part of Kaberle not committing to any team prior to any trade so far as we know is serious. We really dont know at all if Simmonds is a proven player...despite 2 years of NHL experience, or that Schenn is any good despite being a top 5 pick. If they offered Doughty, the Leafs may listen, but again, Doughty isnt proven yet, Kaberle is.

Kaberle for Turris, Boedker, Mclean - 3 proven prospects who couldnt crack the team last year. That speaks volumes of their worth which clear to the completely dillusional is far from enough for the Great Kaberle.

Kaberle for James Neal, Mike Ribiero, 1st round pick - who cares about the proven under 25 power forward we're getting. we're taking on Ribiero's contract. Thus, they either take back Grabovski and Finger and throw in a player like Jaime Benn, or we walk.

I say keep him, sign him to a long term deal at 4 mil per because yes on the open market he will take less, and then sign Thornton and Richards and solve their problems at centre just like that.

Perhaps trading Kaberle for a 1st round plus prospects deal isn't that bad of an idea.  If we could pry a 1st plus a couple of late round picks that could give Burke some flexibilty to make future moves (being a Leafs fan I've made my peace with the reality that we routinely trade our picks, given that we should focus on making good trades).  Hell we could even take a bad contract back (so long that is expiring) in an effort to bring in more picks.

Burke loves couple two 1sts to land impact players (i.e. Kessel & Pronger), Kaberle for picks could pave the way to bring in a young franchise player. Or put us in a position to threat an offer sheet to facilitate a deal.

Is Kaberle as good or better than Pronger?

Similar situation: 1 year left of their deals.

Pronger didnt have an NTC, but kaberle for now doesnt have one either.

Pronger made over 6 mil, a tougher fit cap wise, while kaberle is only 4.25.

Pronger gets points but plays more a nasty, physical game.

kaberle is all finesse and skill. but can put up big numbers too.

Pronger is much older than kaberle and his re-signing puts him at the 35 plus range meaning all the money on his new deal is guaranteed and counts in full under the cap.

Kaberle's new deal will not.

looking at this, Kaberle has a ton of pros and brings as much value as pronger in many ways.

Pronger was moved for Lupul, Sbisa and 2 1sts.

The question is,
being more affordable,
cheaper to re-sign based on the 35+ rule,
being younger,
being more suited to the "new" NHL and its need for speed, quickness on D as per the success of the Wings, Pens and Hawks,

mean a greater value than
being a former hart winner,
2 time gold medalist,
3 time cup finalist,
an impact player,
a former norris winner,
a cup champion,
a former captain?

Pronger's accomplishments alone prove he is the better player.

it would be like Boston moving both their 1sts in 2011 to match the 2 1sts the Flyers moved, Savard and Ryder as large contracts for Toronto to deal with and equalize the cap burden a la Lupul, plus a prospect like Zach Hamill, Jamie Arniel or Brad Marchand a la Sbisa for Kaberle. excessive? to the realist, yes. to leaf nation, fair but still with skepticism over minor details like getting back ryder.

Is Kaberle better than Boyle?

kaberle was signed for just 1 year, Boyle had 5 years left after he reupped with tampa for 6 years.
Boyle had a full NTC, Kaberle is free to go anywhere for now.
Boyle makes over 6 mil, kaberle is at 4.25.
Boyle had 140 points in the last 3 years with a -17 rating, while kaberle notched 133 points in the last 3 years with a -32 rating.

While Kaberle has 4 all star appearances, Boyle's made the league all star 2nd team twice, won a cup, won a gold medal and has 5 50 point seasons compared to kaberle's 3.

Boyle was moved for Matt Carle, ty wishart and a 1st.

Lots of similarities here.

question again is what is better for the opposing team?

getting a player signed long term or a player with 1 year left? there is more uncertainty, but more flexibility.

The safety net of getting a player signed long term is nice....so long as there's the cap space to fit him in. Kaberle is easier per se to fit in, but unfortunately many teams are in a cap bind. 13 teams do not have enough cap space right now to fit in Kaberle's contract without moving one out.

today, that's like LA moving Davis Drewskie, Colton Teubert and their 1st for Kaberle.

fair? yes. fits toronto's needs? no. will that irk leaf nation? guaranteed.

Is Kaberle better than Brian Campbell?

Campbell was a pure rental when he was moved to SJ from Buffalo.

In the two prior seasons Kaberle's PPG ave was .60 and .54. For Campbell in the 2 years prior to being traded, it was .59 and .56.

their skill levels, size and how they play are similar. both play a finesse game with a fine ability to lead the attack, join it, and make fine outlet passes.

like Kaberle, there was no certainty that campbell would have stayed in SJ when they acquired him. the leafs have not given permission for teams to talk extension with Kaberle.

Campbell played 20 games for SJ +13 in the playoffs. Kaberle will be good for at least 82.

Campbell was moved for Steve Bernier and a 1st.

this is likely the offers BB is getting. dont think Bernier of today, a failure in Vancouver. think of him back then as a Shark, showing glimpses of PF potential and being only 22 years old.

Kaberle for Bergeron and Ryder.

The B's are over the cap by 5 mil. here they save that much with Bergeron making over 5 and Ryder 4 mil. Kaberle at only 4.25 fits in the cap nicely for Boston.

Both Kaberle and Bergeron are UFAs at year end. Kaberle would bring the offensive output they need on D. They would still have Krejci and Savard at centre plus the addition of Seguin and Colborne and Hamill challenging.

The adding of Ryder is to compensate for the fact Bergeron is 7 years younger than Kaberle.

Both players have suffered serious concussions thanks to dirty hits but have lived to tell about it.

Why bother getting Savard when Bergeron is better. Some have said Savard and the leafs 1st is acceptable.

Why bother getting someone questionable for your top trade asset when you can get someone who will certainly help the team's faceoff prowess, certainly help the teams PK, certainly give them a massive upgrade at centre in all 3 zone.

Screw the soft, cant play D, cant stay healthy, cant make team canada centre in Savard.

Kaberle and Hanson for Ribiero and Neal

Neal is big, good for 25, possibly 30 plus goals, he isnt even 25 yet and would be the long term, PF to answer one of Toronto's biggest needs. Ribiero is a throw-in in terms of his contract and the fact his contract could equal Kaberle and Hanson combined.

However Ribby would be a solid player. Grabs. gone. they can dump him and it wouldnt matter. Ribiero is the better former Habs centre.

Kaberle is someone Nieuwendyk knows well and knows what he brings. teammates, friends he knows Kaberle is a big asset. BB will play on that fact.

The Stars have Glennie, Benn, Eriksson, they have good young forwards still. Hanson adds to that stable. He isnt as good yet as Neal, the fact he scored just a couple of goals is concerning, but Niewy was with the Leafs organization when they signed Hanson and BB says he played a big part in luring him and Bozak to Toronto. Niewy likes this kid and knows what he brings.

Kaberle and Hanson to San Jose for Clowe and a conditional 1st.

If Kaberle signs, the Leafs get a 1st. If not, they get no pick. Hanson compensates for the size lost with Clowe gone.

But the key of course is Kaberle who would slide into Blakes spot on D. Him + Boyle would give the sharks the best point duo in the NHL.

Clowe is clearly a burke player. big, tough, has skill, can score 25, its what the Leafs need. they could swallow having smallish centers if they had big, phyiscal wingers with them.

The leafs could then grab Torres as well and they have quite a few guys then willing to go to the net.

Kaberle and Hanson for Brett Burns.

Turn this kid back to a forward. Not great to jerk around a young player, but Burns even as recent as the last couple of years has played some forward after being shifted to D after being drafted.

He's big, he can skate, he has skill. On a line with Kessel and Bozak all he needs to do is go to the net.

or, even if they keep him as a Dman, they have Schenn, Phaneuf and Burns as their top 3. The best of both worlds.

Would Kaberle re-sign? well 2 countrymen in Zidlicky and Havlat signed there long term. Lots of Euro flavor on this team and as they shed the Lemaire influence and go offense, what better than having one of the best pure passers throwing the puck up to their fleet forwards.

Screw getting "late" 1sts in August or concussion prone players.

Well only a week left to trade Kaberle. Really hope we can grab a good forward. If not, well then you can bet that either Komisarek or Beauchemin will be goners. Too much payroll currently tied to the D and I doubt Burke will do nothing. Let the Komi and Beau rumors begin.

No offence to the Canadian WJ team...

But the Americans I believe, are still the clear favorite, even if Hall played. I think this is a weaker Canada team then most years...

Their all returning, their better, and they added good pieces...

According to my top secret insider sources at the ACC, the Leafs are working on a big big trade with one other team. This trade is so big it's gonna leave every body gasping for oxygen when it happens. Stay close to an oxygen tank for a few days. Remember you got this tip from Kramer.

Well just about all the media people on Twitter were wrong in predicting the Kovalchuk ruling. The arbitrator ruled the contract void so Kovalchuk is again a free agent. Virtually all of the rumors had the arbitrator ruling that the contract is valid. So much for their sources.

Good on the NHL to reject the crazy 17 year deal.

Now Kovalchuk can sign with anyone.

Kovalchuk, simply put, is not worth the contract and term that he is demanding. The NHL just saved NJ's bacon on this one.

D'amigo opts out of RPI. Interesting decision. It would be cool for him to get a look at the pro level, be it with the Leafs or Marlies, but at the end of the day I hope he is put in the OHL. Give him a year there, see how he does, and if he continues to impress then he could possibly make the Leafs next year. No need to rush.

Sign Kovalchuk for $7.5 mil per year for 5 years.

Trade Grabovski for Savard in soft deal.

Trade Kaberle for Neal.

Instant cup contender. Burke stop watching CSI reruns and make these moves.

thanks to Leafy, nords, Cam7777, the-word, reinjosh, and Boston-Bruins for making this one of the top 11 all time most commented on articles in HTR history.

I've been a member since '03 and this is the most comments I've ever got on a story. (I believe 2nd most actually although all the comments on a previous article i posted were removed and it sits at 0 after being up around 400, this was before the filters and censors were brought in).

GLG, I HEART 80!
