 | HTR Feature Article: Cup-winning goalie could land with Islanders: report |
The Islanders reportedly are interested in Stanley Cup winning goalie Antti Niemi, who was let go by the Blackhawks in a salary-cap move. "The Islanders have been mentioned" as one of the teams "interested" in the now unrestricted free agent, along with the Sharks, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Niemi, at home in Finland with the Cup, told the newspaper he will not play in Europe.
"The NHL is the only place I am willing to play," he said. "I don't know right now where, but I will play in the NHL."
Niemi won a $2.75 million salary in arbitration, but the cap-crunched Blackhawks walked away from the deal, letting Niemi hit the market.
The Sharks lost No. 1 goalie Evgeni Nabokov, who left to play in Russia. Niemi reportedly told a Finnish newspaper that playing for the Sharks, "doesn't sound so bad at all."
Earlier this month, Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro said he would be ready for training camp after sitting out most of last season with a knew injury.

Re: Cup-winning goalie could land with Islanders: report (Score: 1) by Redwings3019 on Wednesday, August 18 (User Info | Send a Message) | Im going to start this off by saying that I dont have all the facts so I could be incorrect in some details....
If I am remembering correctly when DiPietro reinjured his knee there was a report that he did so while playing soccer or floor hockey (or something like this) There was also a report that the NYI could/were looking into voiding his contract because of this. Im not sure on the details on how its possible to void the contract but I think it is simply the fact that he injured himself playing the other sport while in rehab for his back (I believe it was that at the time...who knows with DiPietro)
Anyways the point to this post is if this is still possible or currently being conducted than perhaps that is why NYI are coming up in Neimi rumors. They would get DiPietro's contract (becoming a UFA) and then sign Niemi. I havent heard anything else after that post (mostly because they NYI only drew my interest when Osgood was there) so I could have read some complete BS article....
Anyways does anyone know if this knee injury investigation was/is true and are there any updates on it? It just seems odd for the NYI to be popping up in any starting goalie rumors...unless the faith in DiPietro is very small in that organization (he has been out for some time so who knows how well he will perfom) |
