 | Kyle Wellwood forced to play waiting game … and he's not alone |
Kyle Wellwood, the laid-back former Canucks centre, has never been known to sweat the small stuff, but even he is getting nervous as the days of summer continue to slide by and he remains unemployed. Wellwood isn't exactly pacing the floor of his Windsor, Ont., home, but he does wish that when the phone rings it would be his agent calling, not a reporter.
“I'm just waiting for a call from my agent,” Wellwood said Wednesday. “Still waiting. It's definitely always stressful, I guess, trying to stay in the NHL. It's something I have grown accustomed to and this is just part of the job.”
Wellwood's agent is former goalie Mike Liut, who also represents former Canucks defenceman Willie Mitchell. And while Mitchell, now apparently fully recovered from the concussion he suffered way back in mid-January, is getting plenty of NHL auditions, Wellwood has received little interest.
“You never know how the off-season can shake out,” Wellwood said. “Certainly I was hopeful in July that somebody would show interest in me. But that didn't really happen.”
Wellwood had an inkling he wasn't in the Canucks' future plans when the season ended and when Vancouver signed Manny Malhotra as its third-line centre on July 1, Wellwood's fate was sealed.
Wellwood had 14 goals and 25 points in 75 games with the Canucks last season as the team's third-line centre. He was solid defensively and for the second straight year had a strong post-season, registering seven points in 12 playoff games.

Not a bad pickup for a team looking to get something cheap. If Kyle isnt unreasonable, I dont think signing a $750K 1 year deal is a bad thing.
