Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 Maple Leafs Overview

Maple Leafs blankleafmeister writes "After months of speculation, Burke looks like he is finally done. Here is an overview of the Leafs roster, strong points, weak points, and areas of improvement.

Offense: Scoring, at least on paper, is the weakest part of the Leafs roster. In terms of forwards, they have two proven commodities. They have Kessel, who can be relied on for 30 plus goals, and Versteeg, who can be relied upon for 20 goals. Beyond that, they have question marks. The most glaring question mark is obviously at center, where they do not have anyone who has broken 50 points. The best bet is Tyler Bozak, the undrafted center played the final games last year with Kessel, and developed pretty good chemistry with the star sniper.

His scoring pace topped all rookies. However, it was a VERY small sample and similar success this year is far from a given. If he plays all year, I would expect no more than roughly 50-55 points. That was roughly what his scoring pace would have had him at this year. The next best bet is Mikhail Grabovski, an inconsistent, frustrating player who can make things happen in the offensive zone. However, he is no first line center. Barring a breakout year, the Leafs will have to make due with the current weak group of centers. On the wings, they have Kessel, who will have to have to put up a better offensive season this year than he did last year if the Leafs are to make the playoffs. His numbers last year were indeed impressive, considering he missed training camp, the first twelve games of the season, and was allegedly never truly in top form. If the Leafs are to do any damage, he has to crack 40 goals. Versteeg is a good, consistent, all around, versatile player who can help in all areas. He will be given more ice time, and will see power play time with Kessel and Phaneuf, so he has a better shot than ever to crack sixty points. Nikolai Kulemin had a good finish to last season, playing with Kessel and Bozak. He is a beast of a man, and has a top notch physical game. If he sees more top line ice time, it is not unreasonable to expect a 20 goal, 40 point season from the young winger. Colby Armstrong is a good addition in all areas of the game. He kills penalties, has some offensive ability, and can get under the skin of the opponents. If he can crack twenty goals, I will be thrilled. Although he adds enough to the game in other areas to make him a useful player, even without scoring. The forward core should look like this, at least to start:

Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel
Versteeg-Kadri-Armstrong
Caputi-Grabovski-Sjostrom
Brown-Hanson-Orr

The forwards will have to be the backbone of the offense, but they do have a good cast of offensive defensemen to help them move the puck. They have Kaberle and Phaneuf, both of whom should crack fifty points. Beauchemin and Gunnarsson have some offensive ability as well, and could crack 30 points.

Defense: On paper, defense is the strongest aspect of the Leafs roster. They have two pairings that could be top pairings, so long as the players play up to their potential. They have a capable, shutdown, shot blocker in Komisarek, a developing shutdown stalwart in Schenn, an offensive, hard hitting, puck rushing, all-star in Phaneuf, a smooth skating, smooth passing, power play quarter-back in Kaberle, a decent hybrid defensemen in Beauchemin, a developing puck mover in Gunnarsson, and a decent depth defensemen in Lebda. I will make a prediction. If three of the first five mentioned either develop further, or regain previous form, the Leafs will make the playoffs. I would say that all of them, hold for Gunnarsson, underachieved last year. That has to change. Here is how I would make the defense pairings:

Phaneuf-Beauchemin
Kaberle-Komisarek
Schenn-Gunnarsson
Lebda

Goaltending: It should be an interesting battle between Giguere and Gustovsson. I expect, in the end, that Giguere will win. Who knows, maybe being the first goalie that the Leafs have traded for (in recent history), that didnt cost a kings ransom will serve him well. Either way, the Leafs need one of them to win the goal tending battle, and carry the team. Some top teams like Philly and Chicago have proven that you dont need a high end goalie to win, the Leafs do. Gustovsson is going to be a good goalie, and another year of splitting duties should help him out.

Power Play: The Leafs have decided to keep Kaberle. Whether you like it or not, it shows one thing beyond a reasonable doubt. The Leafs offense starts with the power play, and with a unit that includes Kaberle, Kessel and Phaneuf, at least on paper, it looks pretty good. They have two main threats, the Phaneuf one timer, and the Kessel snipe from the half boards. If they can get a big body who can stand in front of the net, take punishment, screen the goalies and get rebounds, they should make a dangerous unit. As of now, here is how I would make the PP units.

Armstrong-Bozak-Kessel
Kaberle-Phaneuf

Armstrong is one of the few Leaf forwards with decent size, and he is willing to take punishment. Not perfect, but I would say he is the best option.

Caputi-Kadri-Versteeg
Gunnarsson-Beauchemin

No huge weapons, but all solid contributers. Caputi looks like he has the potential to be a major net presence.

Penalty Kill: This is an area that must improve. Given the additons, I think it is a safe bet that it improves significantly. They added Versteeg, who became a PK ace in Chicago, Armstrong, who has good PK instincts, and they are complimenting a group that saw major improvement after the big trades. Versteeg, Armstrong, Kulemin, Sjostrom, Brown even Bozak, could all see PK time this year. On defense, they need Komisarek to regain his 2008 form, and Schenn to develop further. If they can have both of them shot blocking, they should be okay on the PK.

Versteeg-Amrstrong
Komisarek-Beauchemin

Bozak-Sjostrom
Schenn-Phaneuf

If the Leafs PK picks up where it left off, they will have a good shot at a playoff spot.

Rookie Factor: The biggest rookie this season on the Leafs, will have to be Nazem Kadri. He has put on a lot of weight, worked very hard, and is coming into a weak group of forwards. If he gets some time with Kessel and Bozak, he should be in the thick of things for the Calder. Caputi saw some time last year, and has a good shot at making the roster. He should see PP time, and if he puts himself in the right places, should enjoy some success. Long shots to make the roster are Jerry D'Amigo, Keith Aulie, and Marcel Mueller.

I will finish with some predictions.

The Leafs will finish 10th, and give Boston the 12th overall pick.

The Leafs scoring list will look this this.

1) Phil Kessel - 38 goals, 67 points
2) Tomas Kaberle - 8 goals - 55 points
3) Kris Versteeg - 21 goals - 53 points
4) Dion Phaneuf - 17 goals - 49 points
5) Tyler Bozak - 14 goals - 49 points
6) Nikolai Kulemin - 23 goals - 41 points
7) Nazem Kadri - 17 goals - 40 points
8) Colby Armstrong - 15 goals - 38 points
9) Mikhail Grabovski - 11 goals - 35 points

That would be somewhat of a best case scenerio, given the talent on the roster.

Anyways, I think it is safe to say that the roster improved. Playoff worthy? Probably not, but they should be in the thick of things. "

The defence pairings you show are....

Phaneuf-Beauchemin
Kaberle-Komisarek
Schenn-Gunnarsson
Lebda

But yet if you look in hind sight why would you put schenn with Gunnarsson?
Schenn made amazing improvements with Phaneuf at his side why would you stop that? Also the fact Gunnarsson is a puck moving Dman you would think they would pair him with someone he could learn from. Beauchemin or Kaberle would make a dramatic impact on his career and seeing how he is flowing nicely already you might as well give him someone he can learn more from and become even greater of a puck moving defencemen.

Also its pretty slim if Kadri plays with Bozack and Kessel any bit, just for the fact that he is a center and seeing how Burke refuses to admit that he needs a center then I would not see why he would put a guy he dubbed their center on the wing.

If this is the roster going into the year, it is a long shot to hold my interest beyond November.  Given that Burke has been quite of late despite the negative attention of the Kaberle deadline I think a trade is brewing.  Otherwise we'd get the typical MSLE August endorsement of the current roster.

The silver lining of the Kaberle being on the block is that Burke should have an excellent idea of who is potentially available.

Ya I'll agree with your overall assesment. I think that the Leafs are probably destined to finish in around 10th-11th. Given that we have a young roster and some unknowns, it makes it a bit harder to predict, compared to a team like say Florida, who is heavily relying on guys like Higgins, Reinprecht, Stillman, Weiss, etc. who we all pretty much know what they're capable of and expected to do.

That being said, like you point out - a 40 point rookie season for Kadri would be very solid and nothing to complain about, and i hope he can do it, but even if he does, that's not going to make enough of a difference to put us over the hump.

It tough to predict where the leafs will finish this year. They are better than last year, but there are a lot of mediocre teams in the East, outside of the top 6 (Pittsburgh, Philly, New Jersey, Washington, Boston, Buffalo). After those 6 its wide open. The Islanders and Florida are probably the bottom 2 in the conference. The remaining 7 you could make an argument as to where they will finish but here goes.

1) Washington
2) New Jersey
3) Boston
4) Philly
5) Pittsburgh
6) Buffalo
7) Tampa Bay
8) Montreal
9) Atlanta
10) NY Rangers
11) Toronto
12) Ottawa
13) Carolina
14) Florida
15) NY Islanders

But like I said 7-13 is really hard to predict all of those teams have some pretty big holes.

I noticed you didn't put mitchell in there, I guess you forgot him. I'm getting pretty bored of him myself.

but here is what I think the lineup will be:

Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel
D'Amigo-Kadri-Versteeg
Caputi-Grabovski-Armstrong
Sjostrom-Mitchell-Orr

That line up is way better!!!

As for your lineup, Brown i think will be in the marlies as well as hanson. I added in Mitchell since you forgot him. I think I am the biggest leaf fan obsessed with D'Amigo, I think he will crack the line up along with Kadri. If hanson or Brown are not sent down to the marlies then I can see caputi beeing sent down to develop some more.

Here is my defence line up:

Kaberle-Phaneuf
Beauchemin-Komisarek
Schenn-Lebda
Gunnarsson

I think your line up is better, but I think this is what will happen. The top 4 D are guaranteed, Schenn is a gimme but I don't see Lebda playing for the marlies, and since Gun is still developing and spent most of last season playing in the AHL, I could see him spending another season dominating down there, but he probably will be the first guy called up to fill in any injuries on D.

As far as trades are concerned:
Kaberle - probably isn't going anywhere
Phaneuf - is long term
Beauchemin - was one of our worst D last year, I think
Komisarek - was injured most of last season and burke will give him another shot
Schenn- is long term
Gun- is long term
Lebda is new

So if not Kaberle than I smell a trade for Beauch

Not unreasonable. Personally, I don't think the D is all it's cracked up to be. Our top 4 from a few years ago that was something like:

McCabe-Kaberle
Kubina-Gill

was pretty solid. McCabe and Kaberle were top 10 scorers among Dmen (I doubt Kaberle and Phaneuf will be this year), Kubina was a solid 2nd pair dman, who would have been more popular if not for his huge price tag. Gill put up back to back 20 point seasons for the Leafs and was a huge part of Montreal's playoff run. Personally I think Kaberle and McCabe back then are better offensive dmen than Kaberle and Phaneuf now. I'd take Beauchemin over Kubina, but would take Gill over Komisarek, mostly because Komisarek is ridiculously overpaid. The biggest improvement the Leafs have made on the blueline is in the 3rd pair. Schenn, Gunnarsson and Lebda are miles better than the likes of Berg, Belak, Khavanov and whoever else was on the third pair back then (I honestly don't remember or care).

That said, here's my prediction for the East:

1) Washington - don't like 'em, but they are stacked up front
2) Boston - everyone complains about their offence, but how many other teams have a Canadian Olympian that will start the season on the 3rd line? Add Horton and Seguin and the B's will be fine offensively
3-5) Philly, Pittsburgh and New Jersey in some order.
-The Flyers underperformed in the regular season and should bounce back.
-The Penguins are stacked down the middle, but Martin does not replace Gonchar and the are one of the thinnest teams in the league on the wings. Fleury also has to bounce back.
-The Devils are on a downward trend and this is likely their last season to make some noise due to Brodeur's age and Parise likely getting a large raise.
-The strength of theses teams will hurt each of these team's chances of finishing higher than 3rd, otherwise these teams are in the same league as Boston and just below Washington.
6) Buffalo - Miller is a great goalie, but will have a hard time repeating last year, if he is injured or has a large drop off in play, Buffalo will miss the playoffs
7) Tampa Bay - that top 6 is just too lethal
8) Ottawa - this is a gamble, but if Gonchar clicks, Alfredsson doesn't show his age, Spezza plays like he did at the end of last season, Michalek stays healthy and scores 25-30, Kovalev plays well and the get reliable goaltending, this team will contend for home ice in the playoffs, those are a lot of ifs though, so I think Ottawa will finish about here.
9) Montreal - Price isn't Halak, but he isn't that a 40 year old Ed Belfour, this team will still be in playoffs contention in the final week.
10) New York Rangers - barely missed it last year, very weak D and forwards, but next to Miller, Lundqvist is the best goalie in the East.
11) Carolina - This team is tough to predict, Cam Ward can play in the same league as Miller and Lundqvist at times, but this team has had some losses and will likely miss out
12) Atlanta - on the upswing with Bogasian, Kane and ex-Blackhawks
13) Toronto - looks alright on paper and had a good finish, but Leafs fans have said that every year since the lockout.
14) New York Islanders - too young
15) Flordia - Voukoun is good...that's about it

I think the Cup will come out East this year. Chicago took losses, Vancouver is better on D, but worse up front (no Demitra, Wellwood or Bernier), Detroit is a year older. I could see LA making noise though just like Pittsburgh and Chicago have done recently.

Twenty million dollars for Mats, claiming Wellwood off waivers, absurd accusations of tampering (insecure much), signing Sweat and now Torres? Is it just me or is Gillis a bit of an attention whore trying to leetch off our lime light.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a run at Kaberle next off season.  His entire team is build on the Burke/Nonis brand, Gillis is a hack.
