 If you're wondering how Willie Mitchell's doing, some shattered pieces of polymethyl methacrylate behind one of the nets at UBC's Thunderbird Sports Centre will give you an idea.
Mitchell, skating with a half-dozen other NHLers on Monday morning, stepped into a drop pass at the blueline, put all his weight into his 63-inch Easton and blistered a puck past the ear of goalie Martin Jones.
Mitchell's smile can be infectious and he sported one of his biggest after the glass splintered into hundreds of shards.
Mitchell has been skating since early July, back at his home rink in Port McNeill, and joined the group of mostly Canucks at UBC for the first time Monday for what was a spirited session for the dog days of August.
“And it wasn't just coming out and skating [at Port McNeill],” said Mitchell, who looked fine doing several drills and taking part in a game of 3-on-3 at UBC.
“It was a lot harder than what we did here today. It was bag skates. I wanted to push it.
“When I went through all that, I knew, it was 'Let's get going.'”
“I've done everything I need to do, I'm ready to play hockey and I'm excited about it.”
Where that will be we might find out as early as Tuesday.
A lot of teams contacted Mike Liut, Mitchell's agent, but the 33-year-old unrestricted free-agent defenceman wants to have a chance at the Stanley Cup as his career winds down and he has limited negotiations to four teams, including the Canucks.
