I'll tell you right now that I would support any of my favorite players in such a situation.
And to add to what someone posted earlier... For you to sit there and think that there aren't numerous gay men in professional sports already is just plain ignorant. At least ten percent of the American population is homosexual - the diltued idea that this doesn't include male athletes because they are 'not pansys' or because they are 'tough' is ridiculous.
The fact of the matter is that people become defensive when the beliefs that they have had beaten into their heads since their childhood are challenged. We need to realize that as time goes on, we learn that certain ideas are inferior and need to be cast aside.
I don't think that this conversation is any different from one sixty years ago involving race. "If your favorite team signed a 'colored' person, would you still like that team?" The beliefs that people had beaten into their heads at that time had them believing that non-whites were inferior and shouldn't be accepted into all facets of society.
I'm sure that this type of post is a great way to make friends (my second post ever), but then again, is that the only thing that we're here for????

The fact that a gay man is attracted to other men creates a problem within the locker room. I mean isn,t that really the basis as to why men and women can't coincide within the same level of proffesional sport, because there might be a chance of unprofessionalism taking place. In this day and age being gay is becoming far more exceptable than in the past. However the financial reasoning and duty of a professional athlete has become such a buisness, with multi-million dollars at stake that any "rocking of the professional boat" should be deemed unexceptable. I truley believe that this question (a teamate, rather then a favorite player) whould be better posed to the athletes that have to compete day in and day out with a knowingly gay athlete as a teamate, taking all of these factor's into consideration. In today's sports coaches and owner's are worried about team chemistry, by adding or taking away 1 player from their roster it could be jeopardized. If I found out that the player that I considered a favorite, considering he would be a member of my favorite team, I would first and foremost be worried of the overall effect it would have on my team as a whole. One player doesn't make a whole team, so why should one player's personal prefences be allowed to perhap's ruin a whole team.

To say that a player's homosexuality shouldn't/wouldn't matter is rather ignorant. It would affect team chemistry, it would affect team PR, it would affect ticket sales (whther positive or negative) and would affect team focus if it happened in the season.
however, I believe that when a professional athlete does come out, it will be in the NHL, or in a one-man sport, such as tennis or golf. In a one-man sport, the player relies on his personal strength; he isn't pressured to seem straight by teammates or his concern for the team.
But why do I say it would happen in the NHL before MLB or NBA or NFL? Two reasons, which is really one reason: Diversity and number of Canadian teams.
The NHL is the most diverse league in the world. Seriously. Just look at the nationalities and ethnicities represented. Only the NBA is approaching the international nature of the NHL, and that is moving very slowly. Sure, there are some race issues, but I've found that those mostly exist in the US.
(To wit: When Iginla won the scoring race last year, every US news agency noting that "Black man wins NHL scoring race," whereas Canadian news noted that "Canadian player" or "Player on Canadian Team" wins scoring race. The preoccupation with race exists only in the US.)
So, the NHL is the most diverse league, it's more of a niche, the players and fans are more close knit, and I think that if a player on the Red Wings (my fav. team) were to come out, I, the team, and almost all the fans would support him. I like the wings as players and as men, and to know that one is homosexual would not change my opinion, just my perception. |

People are going to live their life the way that they want to. Personally, I have nothing against gays or lesbians, but I do have an issue with some of them who use their celebrity status as a soapbox.
Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen Degeneres come to mind. They are two examples of people using the television medium to burst into our living rooms to say "I"M GAY! I"M OUT OF THE CLOSET!"
My response to that? SO F**KING WHAT!
I don't need people telling me their sexual orientation. What you do with who you want to do it with is your own damned business. Don't make it mine. I don't care one way or the other.
When I boo a certain hockey player, I have been known to call him some undesirable and unmentionable names, some of which may or may not have a homosexual connotation. I do not mean to imply that that player is gay, I am just venting my frustration. Nobody really seems to mind that.
However, if, in the forseeable future, I say those kinds of things to a player who has made his sexual preference publicly known, then that's a whole other can of worms now, isn't it? |

To have an athlete, particularly a star, say that he is homosexual would cause a tremendous backlash against the player, the team and the sport. Surely a significant portion of the population would be indifferent, and another portion would support the athlete, but there would be hate too. It is even worse for a professional athlete or someone else in the public spotlight to make that announcement. Using ones status as a stage for promoting a certain sexual belief is ignorant.
Would I still support a gay athlete? Not if that athlete used his/her popularity as a public stage to promote their beliefs. Greg Louganis is a good example of this. The only reason he announced his homosexuality is because he found out that he was HIV positive. That announcement was more for public health interests than his desire to promote his lifestyle.
In short, sexual preference, no matter what it is is a private issue and doesn't need to be made public. Public health issues are the only reason people need to know about someone's sexual orientation and possible infection with a life-threatening disease. A hockey player making an announcement that he or she is gay just for the sake of coming out of the closet would lose my respect. One that makes the announcement for the sincere desire to protect the health of the other athletes and those who have to provide medical attention to them will gain my respect.
That stance has nothing to do with my religion but does have to do with my loathing for those who grandstand or use their position to advance a personal agenda. |

I can imagine any player that came out of the closet would take a major beating by the media. Billy Tibbets, ex con, moved into Pittsburgh and his neighbors sent out flyers all throughout that section of the city trying to get him thrown out. I know he didn't come out of the closet, but in cities as up tight as Pittsburgh I bet it would be 100 times worse for a gay hockey player.
This reminds me of an episode of Arliss on HBO that was on this week, a pro baseball player was going to come out of the closet during his playing career, but decided against it because he didn't want his teammates to treat him differently. I think that would be the biggest issue for a pro athlete, not the media, but how his teammates would treat him differently. THink about all of the players in the NHL. YOu have to think that with as many players that are in the league, worldwide averages would tell you there has to be at least more than one gay player in the NHL.
So with that being said, "lockerroom chemistry" would not be affected. Why? Well because the fact is, the players in the league are playing now with a gay player(s) on their team, they just don't know it. If that player scores the game winning goal in overtime, do you think his teammates care?
HOw many of you are in contact, work with and maybe even live with someone who is gay? Most of you will deny it, but law of averages tells us differently. Chances are you are either working or know someone who is gay, but isn't ready to broadcast their sexuality.
It wouldn't matter the least bit to me whether or not my favorite player in the NHL was gay. I wouldn't think of him differently at all. The only time I root for him is on the ice, so I could careless about what happens in his personal life.

Re: What if my favorite hockey player were gay? (Score: 1) by ProngerBlues44 on Wednesday, July 24 (User Info | Send a Message) | Anyone here seen Spin City? Carter, the gay black man, is freakin hillarious. He gets jokes all the time because he is "Every kind of minority."
if you ask me, if a player comes out its his own business. And I will also admit, if one of my TEAMMATES came out, I might be a little worried, but I would cope with it.
Plus, I have heard many rumors about Glenn Anderson, anyone have a problem with him? Or how about Guy Carboneau, I know one of his former teammates and he told me that he is a bi-sexual. everyone respected him the same. He also has a hot daughter! Isnt she married to Brendan Morrow?
