Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

September 11- A Day to be Remembered

Team U.S.A. blankProngerBlues44 writes "It is days away from being September 11th, 2002. The year anniversary of the day America was cowardly attacked by terrorists, sending a great deal of pain and suffering to the people of our great nation. My friends and family have all told me it is better to get your feelings in the open and talk about it. That's why I have decided to write this.

I understand this is not entirely about hockey, but it is something to do with our everyday lives. The year anniversary will be next Wednesday, and I expect America to have one of the biggest grieving days it will ever see in the future of this great country.

What were you doing the moment you found out what had happened? It's that question everyone always asks, and everyone always has a detailed answer to go with it.

I was talking to one of my teachers, Mr. Gunnarson, alone in his room when another teacher burst into the room with a tear running down her eye saying the World Trade Center had been "bombed". I remember hearing about the incident in 1993, when a bomb went off in Tower 1 (I believe) and only caused a ruckus in New York. But I went to my next hour (History) and my teacher was standing next to a radio, with his face all red. I looked at him and said, "Mr. Henley, did you hear about the Trade Center?" He looked at me and shook his head and began to cry into his arm. That's when I knew it was drastic.

Even after a year, I still am barely able to even mention what happened that day without being deeply saddened and feel extreme emotions. What had happened that day hurt many Americans and many other country's people as well. So I propose one thing.

The proposal was brought to my attention by an e-mail I received about a week ago. At 12:00 noon on September 11th, 2002, stand up and give the pledge of allegiance. It doesn't matter where you are or what you are doing, but in your time zone, please, do it for your country. If you are absolutely obligated to be in your car and cannot pull over, honk your horn at that time and let people know you are a proud citizen of this great country.

Everyone says this is for America. I believe our great neighbors to the north were affected by this tragedy too. So, even if you are Canadian and you know anything you can do on this tragic day, please do so.

America will still prevail. The War on Terrorism is still at large, and will continue for years to come. Fly your American flags high, and be proud you are American.

i got stuck on a tarmac in arkansas for four hours while my pregnant wife sat at home with our children in complete panic.

i then had to drive home for seven hours from little rock in a rented car with my boss, who cried the whole way home, because he knew many people who worked in the buildings.

i know, for some reason, many of you canadians hate us americans. i hope through all this you've gained some respect for who we are as a people. i've always loved canada and canadians so much. i hope someday that can be reciprocated.

I was substitute teaching in a high school-the same I graduated from. I was in a special education room and working inside the regular classroom. I walked in to a social studies class I had students in, and the teacher had the television on and we watched as the first plane crashed into the world trade center.
We then walked up to the library to work on research projects. The librarian was a teacher I had in English, really strong hearted woman who I have learned so much from(she is a survivor of breast cancer). Well I walked into the library and as I saw her we watched as the second plane crashed into the second tower. She turned around and looked at me and I saw tears flowing from her eyes. I knew then, what is happening was for real. I just didn't know what would happen next.
The rest of the day I had to cover other classes because some teachers left school because they had relatives in New York and they wanted to make sure they were okay. I walked into a World Cultures class with tears in my eyes and the students knew a little of what was happening. I felt it was their right to know so I turned on the tv and had them watch for a little bit, but the principal came in soon after and made me turn off the tv.
I just couldn't believe the amount of grief I had in my heart. The only comfort I found was going to church. That is the only place I wanted to be for the three weeks following what happened.
Well guys, that is all.

As I entered my Calculus class at 10, our TA let the class know that 2 planes had crashed into the WTC. The class didn't react. We just sat there and wondered what he meant by "2 planes had crashed into the WTC."

Class ended and I started walking towards my dorm room. Pulled onto the quarter mile (the strip between the academic and residential side of campus) were two trucks with their doors open playing the news on the radio. About 50 of us students stood there and listened to the news that the towers had just collapsed. I turned around and rushed back to my dorm room and turned on the TV, and saw with my own eyes for the first time what I had only been hearing about. The sight was horrific, a sight that I hope to never see again; and a sight that I will never be able to forget.

To read this, to post this, and to add a comment on this, makes me feel good.

I guess i can say i feel half American, since i've been in this country from 1991. First time i visited was in 1989. My dad being American born made me see what i thought was only Amercia, New York City. We stayed at the Hilton hotel, during Christmas time, and i was in love with the Twin Towers. Though i always have prefered King Kong's building, the Twin Towers were just awesome.

Made me dream, as an 8 year old, that when i will be an adult i'll be working up there and go eat in a fancy restaurant inside.

Entering New York City, from NJ through Lincoln tunnel is the best. The curve that watches Manhattan before entering the tunnel, breathtaking. To see this part of the island, which in a way is small but so HUGE. And at night, it spells out beautiful.

After 9/11 i didn't go to NYC for about 5 months or so. I only went because some guests from Rome came and we brought them to NYC. All i can say is that it was painful that my two favorite towers were gone, and that those bastards ruined my dream.

I am hoping nothing happens this time. If it does, then....geee...i don't know. I don't even know why human beings that don't even know the value of life and can't understand their own religion are living. And, it's pathetic how they blame the Americans that they killed their children and women during an attack. It's pathetic because they don't even treat women as human beings and they put children up front as protection. What's their defense? Operation H.S.C.U (Human Shield Children Up front)?

Those human beings are useless, a threat, and a disgrace...yet they are traveling around the world. They should be banned. I know this is the land of opportunities, land of the free.....and some people may think that disallowing those human beings is wrong and it contradicts the meaning of America. I think they are wrong, it doesn't. Giving the freedom to them, is taking the freedom away from us...and 9/11 has proven that.

My heart is fully Italian, i am a proud Italian citizen, a hard core nationalist, and a pure supporter for the US, and i am proud to have the American Passport as well. I just think that the whole world should start threating these people, terrorizing the terrorists, not just the US. The Russians have done more damage than the US to these people yet they hate the US more? Useless....just useless.

Screw them, they want to die to feel saints and then screw 70 virigin women, i feel sorry for them, because after that....they'll probably have to spank the monkey.

God Bless this Country

Good job, Jeff P. I don't think I could have said it better myself.

I'll have my own September 11 article (on the World Issues Page) right on the anniversary and, as a history major, take a look back on exactly what transpired over the year and see how our world has changed. I tell you, the effects of Sept. 11 will remain for many years- if not decades- to come.

Everyone lost something- be it a family member, a friend, or just a part of our culture- that day, and it is important that we do not forget that. We owe that to the 3,000 innocent people- including Los Angeles Kings scout Ace Bailey- who died that day, but, as Jeff said, to also show our solidarity. You may be lost, but you're definitely not forgotten.

Great post Jeff,
I remeber that day more cleary then any other, i was sitting in class and asked my teacher if she thinks that the media updates their newpaper sites throughout the day, she also made fun of me becuase me being a computer geek and for what i said saying"yeh thats it, all the do is sit on their computers and update the news", so a hour later i see the teacher running down the halls with a radio. she was in tears, ive never been in america so i can't really say i loved the towers,i never really seen them before the attack, but back to my school story, we setup a t.v in the class and watched the new until lunch, the classes all heared about it, so there were no class switches until lunch. i walk through the mall to get to my house, all you see is all the employes out of the stores all focused on the t.v watching the news.
it was 1 crazy day for everybody throughout the world, and personally i find what american is doing now with the iraq situation is crazy, but thats another topic, maybe DG can put it on his world issues page.
Also where i live we had all of the planes that were in the air diverted here, and all of the passengers had to stay in our homes, thats when it really hit home.
God Bless America

Just thinking about the day brings a chill through my body.

I remember that day... who wouldn't......

I was walking out of one of my classes at C.W. Post, (maybe 10 minutes after the plains hit.) Going into another building. As I walked from building to building everyone was talking quietly and saying I cant believe it..... Before I got to my class my friend called. She asked me if I was all right and if I heard..... I was like what are you talking about. She told me a plain crashed into the Pentagon, what I didn't hear.... (since I HAD a Motorola Talkabout phone) Was that 2 plains crashed into the Twin Towers. So was like wow that's terrible. So I went on into my next class and realized that my teacher wasn't coming to class.. Only 1/4 of the class showed up. All of us not knowing the full story.

Then I got a call from my older brother who goes C.W. post. He told me to leave my class and jump in his car.... He said, "we are getting out of here, let's go!" When I walked outside he was sitting there in his car. It looked like world war 3. Every car was just pulling out.... Trying to get off campus. He drove me to my car and told me what happened. I put on the radio and couldn't believe it.

When we got off the Campus I tried to follow my brother to go home, but if anyone knows C.W. Post on long island, you know it's surrounded by forest. Roads were blocked off, Detective unmarked cars were all over the place.... I got lost in the forest with my car. And my cell phone wasn't working. I finally pulled over and some calm guy turned around and gave me great directions. I found my brother and we drove home, In the most amazing amount of traffic I have ever seen. I went home and turned on the TV.... I still can't believe watching the towers fall live on TV.

I was in Texas for a 2 week military school when this tradegy happened. The base I was at went into a lock down type status (no one could get on or off). I was half way through the class so I still had another week to go and I knew my unit was going nuts. I work at the NJ air nation guard base at Atlantic city (the f-16 unit). We had planes in the air over Washington DC and New York within 20 minutes after the DC crash. I felt useless because I knew my squadron was going crazy. My wife at home didn't know if I was going to go over seas or what. My unit ended up staying here and flying over NY and DC. I know my life was affected in many ways. I didn't know anybody around the WTC but I know how sick, angry, and just PISSED I felt. Life will forever be changed and hopefully some people will not take thier freedom that they have in this country for granted.

I was supposed to be around that day but by changing my class days I was spared being around at that time, I guess I can say im lucky.I remember it all, and one thing I will never forget after the towers fell for a long time the smell around the area was diffirent. Like a acid smell or somthing and it did not go away for a long time, and looking at the buildings what was left looked like a bombed out building and one building had half the wall hanging like it would fall at any moment, while it was knocked down ill never forget it its somthing that I will carry for a long time.

We seen people plunge to their death in desperation. The first tower fell, we knew it was a matter of time before the second would do the same. The scene...indescribable...chaotic, frighterning, surreal, ,theres no words to describe it. It was a very somber atmosphere in the days, weeks, and months that followed, even here in Canada. I work in radio as DJ...our job is to inform and entertain, INFORM we did, carrying President Bush and his "Address to the Nation" live on our station....but entertain??? How? No jokes were funny anymore...not for quite some time. Canada seemed to heal and I thought the US had as well until I travelled south of the border this summer. An attack on Iraq is pointless and the things Bush says like "Saddam is an enemy" etc. is all PROPAGANDA. There is NO LOGICAL REASON to attack Iraq. To be honest my HTR people, I really think 101% that the USA wants full control of the Iraqi oil supply by eliminating Saddam, thus eliminating trading boycotts with the USA.

The reason that it is wrong for him to have those weapons is because the UN said that it was wrong for him to have them. He then kicked out the UN weapons inspectors and hid the rest of his weapons. Think about the hatred that he has for Isreal. His chemical and biological weapons can be stored on the SCUD (?) missles that he has and then fired towards Isreal. I mean, whats stopping him. He already used those weapons on HIS own people!!! He is an evil man who supports terror. He gives $25,000 to the families of suicide bombers.

Saddam is a terrorist himself and he supports terror activities. He publically praised the attacks of 9/11. He is just a bastard and an evil man who we need to get rid of. But I do agree with you about the oil situation.

The bombing of September 11 was vicious, unreasonable, a terrible tragedy, no question about it.

But to answer that by decimating thousands of innocent civilians in Afeghanistan...it sounds like revenge to me....

America is the richest, most succesful nation in the world, but when it comes to foreign policy, well, the Bush administration is teaching everyone on how to NOT proceed. Bombing Iraq will only increase the hate all fundamentalists already have against the US, so if Bush continues with this stupid strategy, expect more bombing in America as well.

I leave you guys with a question: do you really fear Iraq??? Cause I don't see any reason to engage in a campaign to destroy a FORMER ALLY of the US (do you guys remember the Iran x Iraq conflict? Guess who was sponsoring Mr. Saddam Hussein...)

I am not here telling you guys that the terrorists have any reason whatsoever to do what they did - nobody has the right to kill a person, unless it's for self defense - but what I am trying to say is that maybe the US should review some of the approaches it has been implementing when regards to foreign policy.

I am French, we lost countrymen both in the 9/11 attack, and during the Afeghanistan battles (yes, we sent soldiers to help you - a war against terrorism must have the presence of all good people), but being so, with the experience we have with Algerians, Moroccans and other people who come from our old colonies, I can tell you that violence won't solve anything, it will only bring more violence and hatred.

The one thing that we need to do is to stop buying gas-guzzling SUVS. Whenever we fill up our gas tanks we are helping the terrorists. Everytime we buy oil from Saudi Arabia some of that money goes to the terrorists. We eleminate our dependancy on foreign oil (that does not mean we go drill up in Northern Canada or Alaska) then the terrorists become less of a problem. We need cars that run on solar power, hybrid power, and electrical power. Then we can go and attack the real haven for terrorists that being Saudi Arabia (we get a majority of our oil from saudi Arabia). The only reason why we are "friends" with Saudi Arabia is because of their oil. That (oil) was the main reason of the Gulf War. America and Canada would loose their cheap supply of oil if Saddam owned Kuwait so we attacked Saddam and his forces. I think 14 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia.
