Ron MacLean not returning to HNIC

NHL News blankpantherboy writes "Hockey Night In Canada will look vastly different to Canadian hockey fans this season after the CBC announced Monday that host Ron MacLean would not be back after 17 years with the network.

The CBC released a statement Monday afternoon saying negotiations with MacLean had ended at an impasse.

``CBC Television is disappointed that we have not been able to reach a successful contract agreement with Ron MacLean,'' the release said. ``CBC Television recognizes the significant contribution Ron has made to the success of CBC Television's Hockey Night in Canada and countless other sporting events.

MacLean reportedly was looking for $600,000 a year in his new deal after earning $400,000 a year in his old contract. Don Cherry, MacLean's long-time partner on Coach's Corner, signed a new deal last week reportedly worth $700,000 a year. MacLean's work has earned him four Gemini Awards as best sports broadcaster in Canada.

Now this a major blow to HNIC ratings. This man is what kept the show together in my mind. He knew a whole lot about the game, and also kept that dumbskull Don Cherry inbounds, most of the time. A sad day truely for Canadian hockey fans. "

Such a shocker. Ron MacLean was everything Hockey Night In Canada was, and to think Don Cherry is going to ramble unconditionally is real unsettling. However, I doubt HNIC's ratings will decline, as, in the end, people watch HNIC for the games and not for "Coach's Corner".

that is a shocker indeed, I'm going to miss him, he was asking for a shitload of money though, i think he didnt sing because he usually doesnt get the respect he'd want from Coach's Corner, he usually gets interupted by Don Cherry (although half the time im laughing my ass off, lol). Whenever he interupts don which is like once in a blue moon, he gets heck for it, lol, dang, its gunna be weird not seeing him on Coach's Corner, it'll be cherry and hisself, i think. Dam, cant believe this, even my mom was shocked and disspointed.. :( gunna miss ya don

That is too bad Ron's not going to be back. I remember him being there as long as I can remember so thats a big dissapointment. It's too bad they couldn't come to a deal with only 200 k differenceNow as for those people who don't seem to like Don Cherry I ask what the hell is wrong with you people? Don Cherry is the man!!! Hell I watch parts of the Leafs games just so I can see Coach's Corner!!!!!!

CBC WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
Ron Maclean was and is the best ever at what he does.
They better find a dang good replaceement for Don Cherry because Coaches Corner will never be the same.
he better stay in Canada and not go to America...
I wish him the best of luck....
Also, on Cherry says he can't imagin CBC with out Maclean and that he still thinks Maclean will be with him by seasons start.
Maclean might make his own show i hear, like Jim Hughson has his own show now called SnapShots...he sits down with an NHL player or someone from the NHL organization ans talks with them one-on-one for 1/2 an hour.
The first show is with Iggy then with Nassy..but that is besides the point
GOOD LUCK WHERE EVER YOU GO RON!

Ron MacLean was a class act all the way. I can't imagine HNIC finding anyone better. Maybe cheaper, but certainly not better. I'd love to hear what Don Cherry's reaction to this is. I remember Ron and Don got closer when Don Cherry's wife Rose died. I think Cherry has tons of respect for MacLean, even though their stage show might lead one to think otherwise. Let's see if Don Cherry goes to bat for Ron MacLean. I liked the way MacLean would stand up to Gary Bettman on HNIC. The guy had balls.

What a huge loss!!!

It's a black day for hockey. Ron MacLean was the man that kept it all together. Sure he took some shit from Don, but he knew it was all in good nature I hope. Ron always seemed to laugh during Coach's Corner anyways. It's sad to seem him go, I grew up watching them on Saturday nights, hopefully he'll be on soon enough though. I just can't imagine it without him. Cheers Don!

this is very sad. Can thank his agent Don Meehan for this one. Does he have to ruin everything good? Peca loved Buffalo but that agent that I am now definitely convinced is the devil ruin every good thing that has to do with hockey!!
I now hope some gun crazed maniac beats the living daylights out of him.

Complete disgrace, I specifically get the NHL Center Ice package so I can get the HNIC feed on Saturday night's. I do not see how the broadcast's will be the same, nor can I picture anyone else alongside Cherry during Coach's Corner.
