 Experts Look: Jyrki Lumme

Maple Leafs blankLeaf_Expert writes "I know this is probably going to be bashed and laughed at, but its something I have to say:

Jyrki Lumme is extremely "hated" on, for no real reason!

Lumme may be overpaid but I'd rather pay him what he makes then the many other high paid players who are "washed up"

Sooo many people have hated on Lumme saying, "he’s soft, weak and coughs up the puck way to much".

Now granted that was the Lumme of last year, but definitely not the one this year who has arguably been Toronto's top 3rd defensemen!

For soft, Lumme isn't one took go "looking" to take the body but he has been great at handling the more skilled players in the league. The Leafs have the 2nd best penalty killing in the league and Jyrki Lumme is extremly underrated for the coverage hes done. If you were to watch Lumme killing the penalties you would see hes a)blocking shots, b)completely taking away the passing lane, and c) clearing in front of the net by any means. Yet people are too ignorant to see that...

As for cough ups, Lumme has *NOT* coughed up the puck at all this season with the exception of when the Leafs were in their slumping stage. Lumme has played the puck out terrifically in his own end and the only times you ever see him cough the puck up is when he is in the opponents zone pinching in. But with a plus 6+ and 45 shots, that "cough up" flaw has almost disappeared from his game.

Lumme is still one of the better puck-moving defensemen in the league. He plays a sound positional game and is useful on the power play.

I'm not saying he deserves all-star recognition.

Of course Lumme has seen better days but he is still a serviceable NHL rearguard. Even though his career is coming to its end, Jyrki Lumme is giving what ever he has left and that is why I am writing this article and Am giving the respect he has earned!....... and deserves....

Go Leafs GO!

PLAYER NEWS
Fredrik Sjostrom, LW/RW
2010/09/02:  Fredrik Sjostrom might be available at the start of training camp after undergoing a shoulder operation this off-season. He is reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery, but Toronto GM Brian Burke said the team would not rush him back before he is ready. We'll keep you posted on his status, but he has no fantasy value. (Source: Ottawa Sun)
Christian Hanson, RW/C
2010/08/31:  The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms with restricted free agent Christian Hanson. Hanson scored two goals and registered five assists in 31 games last season. He should battle for a spot on Toronto's opening day roster. (Source: Sportsnet.ca)
Clarke MacArthur, LW
2010/08/30:  Leafs GM Brian Burke expects Clarke MacArthur to spend a significant amount of time on one of Toronto's top two lines. MacArthur inked a one-year/$1.1 million deal with the Maple Leafs after Atlanta walked away from an arbitrator awarded one-year/$2.4 million deal. He scored 16 goals and 35 points in 81 games last season, but he still has some offensive upside. If he spends the majority of the season serving as a top-six forward, we think he can score 20-25 goals and 40-50 points. (Source: Toronto Star)
Clarke MacArthur, LW
2010/08/28:  The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Clarke MacArthur to a one-year deal. The contract is worth $1.1 million. Last season MacArthur scored 16 goals and 19 assists in 81 games (split between Buffalo and Atlanta). He will contend for a top-six forward spot withe Maple Leafs. He will be valuable in fantasy pools if he can secure a spot on the Leafs' power play. (Source: TSN.ca)
Matt Lashoff, D
2010/08/27:  Matt Lashoff will join a crowded blueline in Toronto this season after being dealt to the Maple Leafs on Friday for minor-leaguers Alex Berry and Stefano Giliati. He played the majority of last season with the Tampa's AHL affiliate in Norfolk, where he posted eight goals, 24 points and 105 penalty minutes in 68 games. Lashoff will likely begin the 2010-11 campaign in the minors with the Toronto Marlies. (Source: TSN.ca)
Jonas Gustavsson, G
2010/08/21:  Goalie Jonas Gustavsson is doing whatever he can to avoid the dreaded "sophomore jinx". "The second season can be dangerous because not everything is new and exciting in the same way it was (when you are a rookie)," Gustavsson said. "You sometimes have to fight a bit more to find that same energy." The Monster should be more relaxed this year, understanding exactly how North American hockey works. He could be a sleeper pick in fantasy if he can re-gain his Pre-NHL, European form. (Source: Toronto Sun)
Tomas Kaberle, D
2010/08/20:  The father of Maple Leafs' defenseman Tomas Kaberle believes his son will be traded during the 2010-11 season. "I think that during the course of the year he will be traded to another club," said Frantisek Kaberle Sr. "There is only one chance for Toronto to get something back in return for Tomas now. In my opinion, I can't see Tomas entering a new contract with the Toronto. Not if Ron Wilson continues to be employed there ... I cannot imagine how he will get along with coach Wilson, who relies primarily on aggression and stress. That's not Tomas, he's a technical type of defender." If Kaberle does end up being moved then he will have to go to Toronto GM Brian Burke himself with a list of teams because Burke has been steadfast in his claim that he will not ask the offensive rearguard to waive his no-trade clause. Look for stories like this to arise frequently throughout the year. (Source: Calgary Sun)
Tomas Kaberle, D
2010/08/16:  The Toronto Maple Leafs were unable to find a trading partner for Tomas Kaberle prior to his no trade clause taking effect again. "While a number of clubs made offers to trade for Tomas, none of them reflected Tomas's value to our team," said GM Brian Burke in a statement. "I understand a period like this is stressful to the player, and we are pleased that there is a resolution, and we can all continue to prepare for the coming season." If the Leafs want to move Kaberle at some point during the 2010-11 campaign they will need his approval. He has one year left on his current deal with Toronto and could end up walking away as an unrestricted free agent next summer. (Source: TSN.ca)
Tomas Kaberle, D
2010/08/15:  Toronto GM Brian Burke believes that New Jersey and Los Angeles could both have been potential landing spots for Tomas Kaberle if not for the Ilya Kovalchuk contract situation. Burke said "I think both teams that were involved - and I'm not going to say that they are interested or were interested or would be - but I suspect that both teams involved in the Kovalchuk situation would have been more involved in this. The window to trade Kaberle is closing so Burke will need some eleventh hour magic if he's going to deal the defender before midnight on Sunday. (Source: The Bergen Record)
Tomas Kaberle, D
2010/08/13:  Toronto GM Brian Burke is still waiting for an offer to jump on in the ongoing Tomas Kaberle trade talk. "It's too early to say. I know it sounds crazy because the deadline is midnight on Sunday, but the simple fact is we haven't received an offer yet (worth acting on)," said Burke while on Toronto radio station the FAN 590. "We're not going to see everybody's best cards until the last couple of days anyhow, so I'm not surprised we don't have anything that we would take yet, so we'll see what happens." We'll keep you posted, but expect Burke to pull the trigger close to the deadline when he believes the potential offers will improve. (Source: TSN.ca)

Are you watching the same games? I am a Leaf fan as well, but Lumme has been playing horrible and by far has been our worst defenseman. I think his time has come and that PIlar should be playing instead of him.

oh for crying out loud...at least this article isn't about Darcy Tucker. Lumme was always one of the most underrated defensemen in the league. He's definitely lost a step. He's not "soft", but he's not a big hitter, although he can pin his man on the boards when he has to. He loves that poke check. He's always been a good passer and works the power play very adequately. Not a big shot, but does use it well when he has to. Problem is, he's getting older, and as offensive-minded defensemen get older...its usually not a pretty sight. His turnovers are going up, but he makes up for it by continuing to be steady in his defensive decisions. He's a puck-worker, not a body-worker. Moving the puck out of his zone is his game...he's actually more comfy in the defensive zone that most offensive d-men. But when he gets into a slump, like he did last year, he can be pretty awful. He can't afford to make bad decisions playing the style he does. He's certainly not elite. Hes a decent defenseman. He fits in pretty well with Toronto. He should not be on the PK much anymore. He should be reserved for even strength and power play minutes, if at all possible. hes done nothing to deserve to be hated. i don't know many people who "hate" Lumme for the sake of just hating him. Lumme's not great. He's not bad. He's Mr. Average. at least he's not an over the hill Paul Coffey...now that was a sad sight in Boston.

I am a huge Leaf fan, I grew up 10 minutes from MLG for the love of God, but now you are making even me sick.
Nothing can get my blood boiling like the many fans on this site, mostly Flyers fans, that continuously bash the Leafs and Leaf posters with comments like "the Leafs suck", but I am starting to understand why. It is these kinds of posts that are driving people nuts, even your fellow Leaf fans.

I spent a good 30 minutes putting together an article today and instead of seeing it, I am stuck responding to this crap. I even beat on a flyer fan today that attacked your Darcy Tucker article and now I owe him a huge apology.

I have no idea what games you are watching, but I to watch all of Leaf games and Lumme is terrible. He is constantly coughing up the puck and has shown that his lost step is costing the Leafs big time.
Please on behalf of the rest of the Leaf fans that are on this site, stop making us look bad.

But I don't think I'd like to see him come back after the way he's played the last few seasons. I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire after this season.

P.S. Why the hell do you guys keep posting this guy's stories? That's like 4 in one day!

OK guys, it's time to speak up about something here.

Every single time Leaf_expert posts anything half the people on this board trash him. It doesn't matter what, I think you do it out of principle.

Rather than trash him, how about you pea-brains realize two things.

1) If you want something interesting, write it! Pick a topic, do some research, and write.

2) Leaf articles get more views because people either love or loathe the Leafs. A website operator wants *hits* on the site. Don't like it? Who the F cares if you don't like it. You still show up and you comment on it.

Would I rather see an interesting trade rumor than a Darcy Tucker or Jyrkki Lumme article, of course! There aren't any though because GM's, for the last 5 years especially, don't talk about anything that has a serious chance of happening.

Do you all feel a lot bigger by trashing the guy though? I just don't get it. Some of these articles may be boring or inane but they aren't the consistent trash that a few people like to spew around here... all the while not even TRYING to contribute anything useful.

Lumme does not deserve the bashing he gets. Thats basically what the article was about.

Quick comment on what you said in your closing, about Lumme being their 3rd best. McCabe would fit that bill better, he does everything better (defend, better offensively, so on), Kaberle is one, Svehla two. He would probably be fourth. I personally like Lumme, and he is over paid giving how he's playing right now.

I read all of Leaf Experts Article and all of yours. I must say some of you are really something, it's not like he took the worst defensemen and said he was the best, so cool down. Anyway about the article, the two things i want to point out about the article are 1) The Leaf Expert's "no real reason for hating Lumme" speach, he's hated mainly because he makes too much money, so bash Quinn for bringing here, not Leaf Expert (for his article) nor Lumme. As for the replies, the one who wrote that Pilar should play instead of Lumme, have you seen Pilar, he's worse defensively than Lumme, but is better offensively, I would take Lumme over Pilar because of contract only, okay maybe because of Pilar's defense too. As for the guy who wrote "are you f'ing kidding me", what part of his article did you not like, you forgot to say, did you forget to put your pants on when you left your house too. Lastly, the reply that said Pilar is a younger version of Lumme of now, i thought that was was a load of bull, he's nothing like the Lumme of now, maybe the Lumme of 15 years ago. That's all I have to say. By the way to all those who i made comments regarding, I don't hate you or dislike you, and if i offended someone respond in a decent way not a bunch of #%$# all over the page.

Not a bad article, however,I must disagree when you say"Lumme is still one of the better puck-moving defencemen in the league".His skills have diminished quite a bit(been in decline for about 5 years or so).His play has improved over the past while, yes.
Should Leaf fans be as harsh as they have been ,on Lumme.Well yes and no.Yes because he is over paid and perhaps ,according to some, over the hill.He seems unsure of himself at times.Maybe it's just me ,but I have noticed that.Seems like a lack of confidence.
No because what can we really expect?.Do we think he should be the Lumme of old(like in his Canuck days).Sometimes fans have unrealistic expectations from his/her perspective teams players. After all everyone is human and I suppose we shouldn't expect "greatness" from all the players.
In the end, however,I see Lumme as a 6th defence at best. However this was a pretty good article to discuss this at length.I hope Quinn starts using the young guys more often in the future.

I used to be a huge Lumme fan (operative phase "used to be") In Vancouver he was know to be a "two way player" meaning for every good play he did, there was one terrible on play.. But he was a good guy to have in Vancouver (fan's liked him) but as far as his skills, there was too much inconsistency..You really wanted to see him develope into a solid-reliable defencemen. Maybe he should of focused more on being a more "stay at home" defencement instead of trying to always being in on the play. Who know..might be too late now.
