 Florida Panthers Draft Preview

2003 Draft Day Rumors blankpantherboy writes "The article you have all been looking forward to, I know. I am going to try and address the needs of the club coming into the draft, some rumors, and just stuff that will help everyone clear up their ideas of what Florida might do with pick numero uno.

As of right now, Dudly hasn't stated much if he is going to keep the pick or trade it. And believe me, this is driving the other GM's absolutely crazy! They are not sure whether Dudly is close to making a deal with a certain team, or just pulling everyone’s leg, and waiting for some inpatient GM to finally bite. The longer he waits, the better the offers are going to be. And since Dudly has stated he is going to wait until its time to hit the podium Saturday afternoon (unless a 'high-way robbery' deal were to come up) then the offer should be pretty sweet.

Needs: Right now the Panthers have a few small holes to fill. The first and most frustrating thing for me is that this team has no captain, or even a veteran leader that is close to becoming captain at all. The team could address this need at the draft if they wanted to, but I would say wait until the UFA opens up, and then sign one. The other need on this club is a big power forward on the wing. The one that comes to my mind would have to be Nathan Horton. He has all the molds to become a legit PF in this league. I could possibly see them drafting Horton with #1.

If the Panthers were to keep the pick, there are only two players I could see them drafting it with.

Eric Stall: Probably the most safest pick in the draft. He has the size, the offensive ability, and the defensive knowledge to become a star in this league. Although one of the Panthers strengths is down the center, they could still use Stall. If they are to keep the pick, it is most likely Stall whose name you will hear.

Nathan Horton: A risky bet with the way he preformed at the end of the year, but with the potential he has to become a top-notch PF, something the Panthers lack, you cannot count him out. A broken jaw seemed to halt Horton who was on a 2 point-per-game pace until that point. After he didn't seem to be the player he was at the start. Thus resulting in his drop in the CSB rankings. But you also have to take in mind that Stall was on a much better Petebourgh Petes team then Horton's Oshawa Generals. It is a tough call no less.

Some darkhorses for the #1 pick would be:
Zherdev Loads of offensive talent that could make him a great scorer in this league (a la Kolvochuck). But you have to realize that he knows squat when it comes to defense. He also doesn't use his size at all. The Panthers already have too many of these kinds of players, so I think Zhederev would only be taken if they were to drop down a few.
Dustin Brown Works hard and has alright size. Knows what it takes to put the puck in the net, but not as well rounded as the others at the top. He is a safe bet if they trade down a few.
Marc-Andre FleuryWhy not. You can always trade him later, although his stock would drop when the other teams know the Panthers would have no use for him, or Loungo is Fleury were to become better.

Rumors: Penguins The Pens are rumored to be looking to move up in the seeding, because it is looking like they want to draft Fleury more and more now. The 3rd overall would be a must. Prospects that are being mentioned are Abid, Sivek, Orpik, and Kraft. Maybe a middle round pick would be included.

Avalance Rumor has it is that the Panthers had asked the Av’s for Skoula, Nedorost, and Tanguay and the Av’s first for the pick. Dudly denied this in a Florida paper, but said something along that line would be interesting.

Flyers The rumored trade here was Philly’s first rounder, Simone Gange, and Justin Williams for the first. Either GM has confirmed nothing here.

Hurricanes My personal favorite. Carolina’s first plus Jeff O’Neil for the first. O’Neil would be a perfect fit on this team, and Dudly has said that Cohen has freed up some money for a big priced player if needed.

Canadiens Montreal has offered the Panthers their first and Marcel Hossa for Florida’s first. Dudly apparently wants Jason Ward included in the deal, and talks have since stopped.

I hope this helps people to understand Florida’s take coming into the draft. Now we will have to wait and see what unfolds Saturday afternoon. After that I will be updating you with the Panthers draft review. Can’t wait for Saturday!

First of all, it is Staal. Second of all, thats who they better pick. Peterborough has the crop of the NHL.

Maybe do a little research before you post an article. Learn to spell some names also. You say your a Panthers fan but you can't even spell the GM's name. It's Dudley, not Dudly. Also it is Staal, not Stall. Kolvochuck....what is that. Not even close. Kovalchuk. Other than that a decent summary of what might happen at this weekends draft.

Pantherboy I don't think the canadiens will give up Marcel Hossa. I more else see them giving up Brisebois in a package deal for mid round draft pick. Secondly Why would Florida want Jason ward??? Can you answer that for me eh? Because really Andre Savard made it clear that he didn't care for Jason Ward so therefore You can see him and Brisebois gone from the Habs lineup next year.

You got a question or comment for me JUST BRING IT and I'll try to answer it ok.

Well, i think Dudley has stated that he wants to trade that 1st overall pick. But, obviously if there are no good offers, he'll stick with it. He wants to trade that pick, if that was not true then the Canes would not be that desperate to get that 1st overall. They have the 2nd overall, and they could easily nab Fleury there, but just to be sure, they rather be 1st.

Horton should not be picked over Staal. In the 1st round, you go with the best available, and Staal would be the best available for the Panthers if they end up with the 1st or 2nd.

Zherdev may know squat about defense, but defense can be tought. You add Zherdev, he ends up making the Panthers a lethal offensive team. However, i am starting to feel that he won't get picked 1st or 2nd either.

In a Rangers board i go to, i replied to a post of a fellow member:

"It's a tough call and it depends if the top 3 d-men will be picked in the top 10.

This is my mock draft until the 12th overall: (presuming Dudley trades his 1st overall for the 4th time in a row):

CAR---1) Fleury
FLA---2) Staal
PIT---3) Zherdev
CBS---4) Horton
BUF---5) Vanek
SJ---6)Coburn
NSH---7) Michalek
ATL---8) Suter
CGY---9) Phaneuf
MTL---10) Brown
PHI---11) Parise/Carter/Bernier
NYR---12) Jessiman/Bernier/Parise/Carter
.

Makes me feel comfortable to stick with that even after Brooks said that the Rangers are seeking to draft Jessiman.

Dustin Brown is an awesome pick up, but he won't be picked top 6.

The Avs don't need to trade that for a 1st, they'll get a mid rounder from the Kings.

Canadiens don't have enough to get that 1st overall.

That proposed Flyers trade is just insane. We might as well throw in Pitkanen and Wyowitka while you're at it. Even if the Flyers were to draft Fleury, what would they do with Roman Malek who is shattering every Czech goalie record right now and is scheduled to come to North America for the Flyers this upcoming season?

Someone needs to ask Milbury how the drafting top rated goalies early in the first round has worked out for him in recent years?

As a Flyers fan I say screw the first overall pick. I'd rather pick up 2 good centermen (or maybe that winger Jessiman (I would not want to be the guy assigned to keep him from driving to the net) in the first round than trade the farm for a goalie who might or might not help you out 4 or 5 years from now but who is not a better prospect than Malek.

Of course this means we'll draft a defenseman and a goalie in the first round. Such is life.

Can anyone tell me anything about Andrei Kostitsyn? I've heard/read in multiple places that he is really the best player available in the draft, but suffers from epilepsy? (I think that's it...) In most all mocks I've seen he seems to be left out, but yet, other people rave that he is the best player in the draft? Can anyone tell me anything about him?? Obviously the Pens are in no position to take a gamble, but it sure sounds like if the health issues turn out ok, that Kostitsyn could be a steal for someone?? Anyone??

If those trade proposals would be true,Colorado and Philadelphia are both crazy, the 1st pick is not worth that much(remember Lindros...),Carolina is reasonable if they want Fleury cause Stahl from what i heard is similar to O'neill and as for Montreal, well with the Theodore thing going on,dont be supprised if he`s included in a deal.Hossa and 1st for Florida`s 1st would be enough for Stahl.
