 Crazy Haircuts

Strange Happenings blankDonovan writes "Thats right, 30-odd years after the conception of the term "Hockey Hair", we look at some of the craziest hair-do's in the NHL today.

Where shall I begin? Lets look at the origin of the term "Hockey Hair". In the early to mid Seveties, and new style of hair began sweeping aross the recentley expanded NHL, the mullet. It was a regular looking hair-cut in the front, but in the back the hair became longer, thicker, and more desheveled. Whether it was to look cool, or to keep the neck warm has not been decided yet. It gave the apperence of someone wearing a hockey helmet, with a main sticking out the back. God, was it ugly. But for some reason it reamined in style for almost a decade. Gradually it died out in the 80's replace by different looks. Occasionally, you can still observe an actual mullet on some broadcast. Example: Brian Engbloom.

Well that leads us to today, where many superstars have hair which is sure to stick out. Lets begin:

A lot of players have a traditional short-cropped cut, which is no fun. Other have slightly longer hair, but still nothing that great. However a few players have hair cuts that make you notice, and say "Wow! What the hell did he do to himslef?"

Anson Carter has his trademark dreadlocks. Back in 2001, they started as a simple, conservative, not too long style. But by now they have exploded into Bob Marley-like proportions.

Ryan Smyth has a hair style that can be best described as Farrah-hair, after Farrah Fawcett-Majors, star of tv's Charlie's Angels, and hear-throb to many pathetic teenagers in the late 70's.

Brent Sopel has, well, a rats nest. Long deshelveled hair, that when playing looks as though something is living in it.

Late last season, Stars d-man Derian Hatcher expieremented with a totally new look. It combined the previously mentioned Farrah-hair, with the classic mullet, for a horibly stupid look.

Toronto pest Darcy Tucker, with his unkept hair, and constant play-off beard, bears a resemblence to Jack Nicholson in "The Shinning". Here's Johnny!

Dany Heatley bears a startling resemblence to a former Flyer great, missing teeth and all. However it is his classic "white-man" afro that does it best for him. Looking like a combination of Bobby Clarke, and singer Bob Dylan, Heatley will continue to amuse the fans for years to come.

Finally we come to my personnal favorite: Toronto defenseman Bryan McCabe. Currently he is the only player in the league to have a mohawk, but that wasn't his best look. While he was injured, he appeared on "Satelite Hotstove" sporting a new haircut, that looked like something out of the early nineties hip-hop scene. The sides of his head were shaved, and the hair on top stuck straight up a good four or five inches. After a few weeks of this, he turned it into the mohawk he sports now.

So there you go. A look into the current crazy looks into the NHL

Please feel free to add you favorite styles, both past and present"

The Donald Brashear sideburns and nothing else...lol.
Jeff Odgers monstrous moustache which looks odd to me.
Zedniks bleached head, back when he was a Cap and his Zed Heads.

I think Sopel finally got a haircut, we'll see if he has a better year.

McCabe has weird hear. Just does not look normal for a hockey player to have that hair. However he has the attitude in his game to have it.

Chris Simon in his Avs days - Straight out of an episode of "Cops".

Btw, as someone who has sported the Messier / Demitra look for eight years, I remind all you non-follically-challenged people: An abundance of testosterone is a major contributor to hair loss. So, us bald guys are more "men" than all you damn hippie freaks.

Jaromir Jagr - before he cut it....awful

I think international soccer stars beat the NHL with hairstyles...

Beckham - What are you thinking?? He has more hair than the whole rest of Real Madrid combined.

Ronaldo - at the World Cup..it looked ridiculous

Calder Nominee for worst first year hair...

Natahan Horton, Florida Panthers

A combination of greasy spikes and neck scruff.

It appears as though his Mullet has exited the larval stage of it's development and is going to eat his real hair and dig in for awhile.

Cut the sides, don't touch the back

Carter needs to ditch the dreads and get him one of those big ass fros. That would open a few eyes in the stands.

What about Donovan, the article's author? I know him and you would love to see his hair and why he chose to write this article. He is a mirror image of Joe Dirt working his way to Billy Ray Cyrus. Donovan the mullet, sweet home alabama. His mother "the mullet" was also on an episode of jerry Springer. It was the one with the woman who could eat out her own ass, must have been all those years in the circus, huh Donovan

Dude..do you even know what a mullet is?
It seems you are saying that anyone who has long hair has a mullet(ie. Engblom). A mullet is someone who has short hair allround except the back. Like Jagr had for many years. I have long hair with shoeter bangs, i do not have a mullet. Mullets are for hicks like billy ray cirus.
