Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 Denis Savard's Penalty Shot Solution

The Great Debate blankcomrie44 writes "The Hockey News had an interesting idea in it this week to solve the low scoring problems in the NHL, involving the most exciting play in hockey.

Savards idea is simple, when a penalty is called, the coach is given a choice of taking a man advantage or a penalty shot.

Now at first you might think this is going to far, that 6 or 7 penalty shots a game would result in too many goals, well, think again. The percentage of players scoring on penalty shots is around 23%, where Detroit's power play last year operated at 25% and the average is around 19%.

The other argument may be that Hockey's a team game and one-on-one plays take away from that. I say what's wrong with that? Football games can be decided mainly on a kicker putting a ball through the uprights and basketball has free throws that often decide the game.

It would also increase the flow of the game, refs would be less likely to make fringe calls and opponents would be less likely to clutch and grab Markus Naslund or Joe Thornton as it could cost them the game.

You may bring up the point that penalty shots are exciting only because they're so rare, I think not. Look at soccer, where penalty kicks are a very common occurence and are always exciting."

Denis Savard? wtf? It was Denis Potvin who wrote the article on penalty shots.

it wouldn't be the same game. Imagine in the third period in a close game... and then a penalty shot for the team in the lead? The flow of the game would be non-existent. There would be stops and starts and the game would take hours. I think you would see way more dives, very similar to soccer. there would be more emphasis on scorers less on playmakers (ie drafting would need a major overhaul). Stats are out the window, no comparing any new players to old etc.
I don't have a solution for increasing the GPG. I enjoy a close game, the vancouver/minnie game that resulted in a 1 - 0 score was an excellent game to watch, way better than a 6-1 blowout where the other team just gives up.
The best idea i have heard is the 2 minute major penalty - for things like highsticking that don't draw blood, interference (if they wanted to get rid of clutch and grab that would be a good incentive..) And finally, widen the friggen rinks, players are bigger, faster so increase the rink size proportional to the increase in player size (players are x% bigger, increase the rink by x% - simple math)
i am done - bottom line, penalty shots, there need to be more of them but i like the fact that a team may only have a few chances a year, not a few a game.

Irregardless of how penalties are enforced, the referee still must make the calls. As long as the officals let interference and "clutch n grab" continue without a penalty called how the penalty is applied is just not a solution. The solution is for the referees to call the penalties not changing how they are enforced (i.e. full 2 minutes, penalty shots etc.).

they should just call clutch and grab like they're supposed to.

I'm all for penalty shots AFTER OT to decide a game, but not all over the place in the MIDDLE of games.

too much stop-and-go, kills the speed of the game.

much of hockey's appeal is in the speed - compared to marathon games they have in baseball...which is boring as sin.

The reason that it is one of the most exciting plays in the game is because it doesn't happen very often. It would ruin the game.

First off, I think Sevard would know more about Penalty Shots than Potvin, but they were both great.

I don't know if I like it. It sounds kinda agreeable, like the 2-point option in football. On the other hand, it kinda takes away from the team game. It works in certain situations, but dosen't seem practicle in others.

I think this is going a bit far. However, it is not a totally ridiculous idea, but it needs to be a little bit different. Like say, a coach can decide whether to have a penalty shot instead of a power play when a major penalty is called. The upside then would be a bigger chance for a goal, the downside is you have a chance of multiple goals in a power play on a major penalty. That way it still equals out a bit.

Another restriction could be that the coach is allowed only 3 penalty shots a game, so he has to be careful when to actually choose to pick a penalty shot over a power play.

I believe that way, it would actually make the game more exciting and it would also keep the players from taking the big penalties where they try to injure the other player.

That's not hockey. It's a nice idea, but I think people when they say they want scoring to increase, actually mean they want the pace to increase. Goals are nice, but as long as the game is back and forth, fast paced, hard hitting all night long, I'm happy.

This has to be the stupidest idea ever. PP has its excitement. Sometimes you score on it sometimes you dont. Penalty shots are unique. Around everyteam gets one once a year. Some teams gets 2. A team scores 1/4 times. This idea will ruin hockey forever. Everyone will start playing like there is a gun to the players heads.

I think that the idea is about as reasonable as any other idea floating around. It's as reasonable as the current overtime structure. If it were implemented, I'd like to see three modifications.

1. Apply it to penalties in the offensive zone on infractions against the puck carrier. If a penalty shot is given when a scoring chance is taken away, then that could be the basis for this rule. If the man with the puck is tripped, held, etc., chances are he was in a position to create a scoring chance. Penalties away from the puck should be a regular penalty.

2. Give teams the choice in the last five minutes of the game, or each period. If it's a tie game late, it makes the importance of such mistakes that much greater.

3. Give each team a certain number of penalty shots per game, say one per period, with no carry-overs. Knowing that penalty calls normally dry up late in the game, some coaches might use the early opportunity to get on the board first. Others might gamble on a late game brain freeze by the opposition.

Lets not give Refs any more power than they already have. They can't even call games properly as it is.

BTW, we need a chip in the puck so they know when it crosses the goal line. The no goal in the Caps Canes game was ridiculous. Half his body was past the line and he caught the puck with his glove and both hands were past the line!!
