geniushockeykid writes "TSN reports: "A freak goal credited to Patrick O'Sullivan of the OHL's Mississauga IceDogs with 5:12 remaining capped a U.S. comeback in a 4-3 win over Canada in the final of the world junior hockey championships Monday.
Canadian goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury attempted to clear the puck but it bounced off defenceman Braydon Coburn and into the net despite a wild lunge from Fleury."
This is the first time the U.S. has won the World Junior Championship. To me, this shows how far the U.S. has come with its junior hockey programs, and shows a bright future for American hockey in the NHL. Congratulations to Canada for a great game. "The 2005 world junior hockey championship will be held in Grand Forks, N.D., and the U.S. will go in as the defending champion.""

USA came in the favorites with all the pressure on them and won it with a lucky heart breaking goal in the third, after scoring two goals in the third to tie it. USA was long overdue, and they finally lived up to their expectations. Canada did very well for a team who was suppose to be rebuilding and only had two returning players. The Canadians are going to be really good next year with at least 12 players being able to return. Praise was the best player I watched at this years WJ's, and I was also really impressed with Stewart from Canada, and Filppula from Finland. It was also nice to see Finland the host team win a medal, they really had a team with a lot of heart and emotion (ask anyone who watched them in the USA game). |

The Americans may have been the favorite but when you go into the 3rd leading by 2 and you lose its called CHOKING. This is the 3rd year in a row. Last year I thought the Russians were the better team. This year I had no doubt in my mind that they could beat the US, but in the end they couldn't handle the pressure. And another thing what made the Americans the favorites is it because they had 8 returnies and Canada only had 2. Thats retarded who ever thought thats what makes a team the favorites. Canada had teh most 1st round draft choices on thier team. They had more players on team Canada that were captains on thier respective teams then any other country. Also they were supposed to have much more superior goaltending then any team in the tournament. With all that you would have thought that Canada would have been the favorites. Because they had only 2 returnies they were not the favorites. So next year Canada has the possibility of having 13 returnies so that will make them the favorites. Give me a F'in break. They could have every player returning next year and their is nothing that would make me believe that they won't choke for a 4th consecutive year. |

I work downtown T.O. and the nearby bar was packed with people watching the game and virtually dying after squandering yet another third-period lead... let alone the fluke goal. Like most people I should've been at work, and like most people I was crushed by the unfortunate loss.
We all can't figure out why Canada can produce the majority of the best players in the world, yet have troubles winning gold everytime.
My lament, however, is over: the U.S. played a great game and showed a ton of heart. Coming back like that in the third is truly commendable, and the bad goal shouldn't take away from that.
I look forward to the rematch next year on your pond. |

Some thoughts on Team Canada -- I hope some Canadians read this and agree with me and maybe the message gets filtered through to others.
There really is no reason for Canadians to panic just because they're not winning gold *every* year. I'm getting tired of hearing all this talk about how Canada needs to revamp its youth and junior hockey programs. Hogwash.
Canada isn't playing worse. A lot of the rest of the world has just caught up a bit. Team USA didn't upset them, they were actually favored by most going in. This just happens to be probably one of the best crops of young American hockey players we've ever had. Other years it's Sweden or Russia or something who have a Good Year.
I was extremely disappointed when Canada began closing some of their junior levels to foreigners. It was a knee-jerk reaction then, and the wrong one I feel. Consequently some of these European guys and such are going to play NCAA hockey or something instead and THEN it'll dillute the pool in Canada.
Also something for Canadians to take note of -- where once there were 2 or 3 countries there are now 5 or 6. It's not Czechoslovakia anymore -- there's the Czech Republic and Slovakia -- both very good hockey countries on their own. And it's not the Soviet Union anymore, it's Russia and Latvia and Belarus and all sorts of other smaller countries. That makes the odds even greater for someone other than Canada to win gold, as more people play hockey in these countries and their programs get going. This is one of the big reasons why Russia isn't as dominant anymore too.
I really, really hope Canada doesn't mess with its program further though in a knee-jerk reaction to this. There's nothing wrong with the program guys, you just can't expect to win every tournament anymore with more and more countries playing more hockey than ever...

WHY CANADA LOST: (Score: 1) by hockey-mongloid on Wednesday, January 07 (User Info | Send a Message) | | Why isn't more criticism landing on the shoulders of the Canadian coach, Mario "Tatoo" Durocher? Let's face it, this clown was too busy looking for "da plane boss, da plane" instead of watching what was unfolding before his beady little eyes. Maybe Canada should have kept a booster seat on the bench for him, because they led by two goals going into the third and appeared to have the yanks by the 'nads. They get a goal against, and the americans come on strong- the Canadians looked dazed and unsure what to do. Why didn't Mario call a time out, settle down the troops, and point out they were still in control? Why didn't he give Crosby more ice when it's obvious the kid is capable of making a difference by himself with his creativity? Why didn't he recognize that Fleury had been less than spectacular leading up to the game, and completely out of it in the most important one? Why? I'll tell you why- as a hockey coach Mario Durocher is a total and complete failure. A coach should lead, and it's clear his players were playing for their country, not for this Keebler Elf with a clipboard. Let's be honest here. How many 18 year old guys are going to listen to a Cirque Du Soleil reject tell them how to play hockey? NONE! He should have had the guts to put in another goalie when it became apparent M.A. Fleury was busy daydreaming and he should have had the guts to play a 16 year old phenom who was ready for this tournament. Most of all he should have had the wherewithall to recognize a bad situation and fix it. The third period was a bad situation and the only solution Mario had was being mopped up by a Finnish housekeeper at the time. Doing something and having it turn out to be the wrong thing is infinitely better than doing nothing and watching it all fall apart. Thanks for the silver medal Mario. |

Why do I keep hearing USA deserved to win that game? CANADA WAS CLEARLY THE BETTER TEAM IN THAT GAME - IT WAS PATHETIC THAT USA WON.
However they cannot press much against Canadians- this is their first time ever winning it and all.
And a should-have-won game in the GOLD medal game (they were expected to win bronze) against the AMERICANS- who only have a very small amount of players returning (good experience then) is pretty amazing for the young and skilled Canadian team.
Oh well just adding to how great it will be when the Canadians whipe everyone of the ice in Grand Forks, especially the Americans. |
