Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 US World Cup Roster

Team U.S.A. blankdistance7 writes "Well the Canadian one started a discussion, so, why not have some views on this one?

It's going to be harder to choose players for this team, due to the lack of proven goaltending, the quality is there, but inexperience and inconsistency is bound to take its toll.

Goaltenders:

Mike Dunham - Most Capable of the bunch
Garth Snow/Rick Dipietro - toss up, i think one will be chosen.
Brian Boucher - Dont bite my head off for that one. He has international experience in juniors, see what he can do.

Defense:

Brian Rafalski
Brian Leetch
Derian Hatcher
Mathieu Schneider
Tom Poti
David Tanabe
Chris Chelios (come on...he's always there)

Center:

Jeremy Roenick
Mike Modano
Doug Weight
Chris Drury

LW:

Keith Tkachuk
Mike York (plays center also)

RW:

Brett Hull
Bill Guerin
Tony Amonte
Adam Hall (add some youth, quality player)

I know what I have isn't done. It's really hard to find a good enough American LW. Help me out with that. We all know there's going to be lots of surprises, just basically because the roster for this team is wide open.

They take 3 goalies. Boucher will have to prove something the rest of the way. I think Dipietro will be a good fit for the US team. Dunham will make it but he has to be more consistent. Snow won't make it with those 3 ahead of him. He has played in the world championships before, but that was only because the only other 2 goalies were in the playoffs. I would love to see Snow and Dipietro there though. But as of now its Dunham and 2 of the other 3.

Also to spit out a huge miss up there is John Leclair. The greatest hockey player from the state of Vermont.

Also something interesting i heard and read. Bobby Holik has American citezenship now. Asked what team he would like to play for. He said he would like to play for the USA so he can play C and Drury can play LW.

Adam Deadmarsh has a mush head right now but if he was healthy he could play the LW....The U.S needs a all star goalie.....if they had one they would be able to compete a whole lot better in international competition...Yeah I know they made the gold medal finals but I just think the current U.s squad is too weak in goal and the D is either too old or too mistake prone....2 Good D Men arent enough to take you all the way.

Don't forget Jamie Langenbrunner, Todd Marchant, Adam Deadmarsh (If he can play), Jason Blake, Eric Cole (LW), Mike Grier, Shawn McEachern (LW), Mark Parrish, Eric Weinrich, Brian Gionta, Paul Mara, Trent Klatt, and Keith Carney.

Get rid of Poti, insert Carney. They had better pick a very defensive minded coach because with a pretty decent defense, but horrible goaltending(considering the level of talent in this event), they need to keep that puck out of the net. Watch for Zach Parise to be one of the 3 youngsters to be named to this team. I would guess Parise, DiPietro, and maybe Eric Nystrom??? That's the problem this team will have is that they need 3 guys 22 and under, and the US doesn't have the stars in that age group that Canada, and most of the European countries have. R.J Umberger, Dustin Brown, Mark Stuart, and Ryan Suter are other possiblities.

Shawn Bates, Scott Gomez, Aaron Miller, Matt Cullen, Steve Konowalchuk, Tyler Arnason, Brett Hedican, Sean Hill, Craig Conroy, Brian Rolston, and Bryan Smolinski.

I wrote a similar article, but you won.

How about Legwand? If he gets it together he may find a place.

Whatever happened to Kurt Sauer? Last year they were saying he was a strong candidate. Whatever happens on defense, I'm still happy there's no Gary Suter or Phil Housley.

M.Dunham

M.Modano
D.Weight
J.Roenick
T.Marchant

Wingers
K.Tkachuk
T.Amonte
J.Leclair
B.Guerin

J.Langenbrunner
S.Konowalchuk or B.Rolston

Defense
B.Leetch
B.Rafalski
M.Schneider
D.Hatcher
T.Poti
K.Carney or P.Mara

This U.S. team would be pretty good but I do not think their goaltending can play head-to-head with Brodeur or Hasek or Khabibulin etc...

Shawn McEachern should be on the team, last I checked he was second only to Roenick in points by a US born player this season. Brett Hedican could be a better defensive choice than Tanabe, and Craig Conroy deserves to be there too. Forget Adam Hall, he will have his chance in the future this event doesnt come very often so give it to the veterens. As far as goalies go, i am going to go out on a limb and say Damian Rhodes and Guy Herbert will not be making the team.

You can scratch Adam Hall and put a CANADIAN Deadmarsh(if healthey)on RW. If he's hopefully dead by then, put Drury on RW and Marchant as your 4th line centre. The US could have a 4th line of Konawalchuck - Marchant - Grier if they want. The other 2 LW's will be Rolston for sure, and probably Konawalchuck.

John LeClair sounds like a good fit. Brian Rolston is capable. Adam Deadmarsh could maybe do left, I know he's a right wing, but maybe could make the transition. Shawn McEachern? Fast, speedy guy who can score and shut down the opposition's top wingers, basically Rolston without the size.

Tom Poti should not be there, he's horrible defensively. Take it from me, I have the misfortune of being a fan of the team that he plays on. He doesn't even come back 70% of the time.

As for Defense, Aaron Miller... Mike Komisarek if you wanted youth, could be a long shot. Ken Klee, Joe Corvo? Eric Weinrich is a solid steady defenseman. Scott Lachance?

I did a prospective USA roster back on 11-30-03 on one of my other sites. Here was the list I came up with after some digging aroudn to try and find natural positions:

G:
Mike Dunham
Rick Dipietro
Brent Johnson

(other fringe possiblilities: Ryan Miller, Garth Snow, Brian Boucher)

D:
Mathieu Schneider
Brian Leetch
Chris Chelios
Tom Poti
Brett Hedican
Keith Carney
Jeff Jillson

(I totally spaced and forgot Derian Hatcher at the time because he's been hurt, but he should be on there obviously bumping Jillson or Carney out. Fringe ones include David Tanabe, Paul Mara, Deron Quint)

LW:
Keith Tkachuk
Adam Deadmarsh (if he's healthy)
Brian Smolinski
Erik Cole
Jason Blake

(John Leclair, Bates Battaglia, Landon Wilson)

C:
Mike Modano
Doug Weight
Jeremy Roenick
Chris Drury
David Legwand

(Todd Marchant, Tyler Arnason, Mike York, Brian Rolston, Scott Gomez).

RW:
Brett Hull
Bill Guerin
Tony Amonte
Jamie Langenbrunner
Trent Klatt

(Mike Grier, Brian Holzinger, Mark Parrish, Dan Hinote, Jim Dowd, Mike Knuble).

Now since then a couple things have changed in my mind. For one I wouldn't even consider Deron Quint now, Boucher had that little shutout streak which caught everyone's eyes, Brent Johnson's been nowhere to be found, etc...

Aside from that I chose this roster for a reason back then -- it's not necessarily 100% the best players, but more a roster of guys I'd think could work well together. A good mix of speed, skill, and tough play. This is a team that'd have to play a more-grinding North American style to hang in there with everyone but I think it'd work. A lot of the forwards I mentioned can also hit and play a hard game. And some of these guys are more guys that Find Ways to Make Things Happen as opposed to just being playmakers.

Team USA would do well to stop and consider a couple guys lik Dan Hinote on their roster for this reason. Sometimes a 4th Line really does better as an acual 4th line than as a bunch of 1st- and 2nd-liners thrown together on a 4th unit.

As mentioned on the Canadian listing, 3 players from each team must be under the age of 22.
Now they may not necessarily play, but it might be a great idea for the Americans to put Al Montoya between the pipes - this gives you one of your three, plus you really need goaltending. Now that would be a great story for American hockey!

I think Jamie Langennbrunner has earned a spot on this team. He has played very well for the Devils since the beginning of last season. He's damn good on the PP and the PK for the Devs and was the most important memeber in their playoff run last year not named Brodeur. And if you're desprate for a winger, just look for wee Brian Gionta.

You definitely carry three goaltenders... here's my opinion on the roster:

Goalies:
Mike Dunham
John Grahame
Brent Johnson

(Rick DiPietro is another possibility, if he plays more... and Brian Boucher, if he shows consistency)

Defensemen:
Brian Leetch
Brian Rafalski
Chris Chelios
Derian Hatcher
Bret Hedican
Keith Carney
Jeff Jillson

(Hall Gill, David Tenabe and *gulp* Tom Poti are other options)

Forwards:
Mike Modano
Keith Tkachuk
Jeremy Roenick
Brett Hull
Adam Deadmarsh
John LeClair
Bill Guerin
Tony Amonte
Doug Weight
Mike York
Chris Drury
Steve Konowalchuk
Jason Blake
Brian Rolston

(Erik Cole, Todd Marchant, Scott Gomez, Jamie Langenbrunner, Mark Parrish, Dan Hinote, Mike Knuble are good other options)

That's what I think.

As always the Americans will have a powerful team, and i think their defense should not be underestimated.

Centers

Mike Modano
Jeremy Roenick
Doug Weight
Brian Rolston

Left Wing

Keith Tkachuk
Chris Drury
Steve Konowalchuk
John Leclair

Right Wing

Tony Amonte
Brett Hull
Bill Guerin
Jamie Langenbrunner

Defense

Aaron Miller
Brian Leetch
Derian Hatcher
Brian Rafalski
Keith Carney
Mathieu Schneider

Goalies

Rick Dipietro
Mike Dunham
Ryan Miller

For the goalies i think a young guy like Ryan Miller who is supposed to be a good blue-chip prospect for Buffalo could make that team.
