Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

We can all get off Don Cherry's behind now

The Great Debate blankchubbs1002 writes "CBC just posted a story that a lawyer in Winnipeg proved Don Cherry right.

Interesting read (taken from the CBC website):

WINNIPEG - Don Cherry was right when he claimed mostly French-Canadian and European NHL players wear hockey visors, says a Winnipeg lawyer who crunched the numbers.

Curtis Unfried told Newsworld on Wednesday that his investigation of data showed 59 per cent of European players wear visors, followed by 55 per cent of French-Canadian players.

Among North American players born outside of Quebec, only 20 per cent wear face shields to guard against injury.

"At the end of the day, when you boil it down to [Cherry's] one particular sound bite…, the numbers speak for themselves and clearly show what he did say is correct," Unfried said.

Unfried said his research consisted of getting the rosters of all NHL teams, then going on the internet to confirm the players' places of birth and whether they wear visors.

Unfried said he was surprised by the results of his research, especially the finding that only 35 per cent of all NHL players wear visors.

LOL That's just beautiful. Ok, so are there still annoying little buggers who have problems with this? Jack Laviolette or whatever your name is? Are you still pissed?

Yeah. He got the numbers right.

Still doesn't change the fact that he generalized two entire groups of players, basically saying they were all wimps. No matter if a certain set of numbers supports that statement, it was still very wrong to say what he did.

Face it, his opinion on this is very out-dated and grossly prejudicial. Those people with a mind to think for themselves stopped listening to him a long time ago. His rantings, for whatever reason, get ratings and this is why he has the job he does.

Nevertheless there are still some people on this site that would like to get Don Cherry's ass. GretzNYR99, big_booty, Leaf_Expert, The_Conductor just to name a few.

Don Cherry knows his hockey, there is no doubt about that. Jacques Demers also knows his hockey, a lot better than Cherry in my opinion. Hell he won a cup with an underdog team, I guess that says it all. As far as Cherry's comments goes, they can be very racial oriented, and I really don't care for them. Saying things like Quebekers want Canada's cash and not the country or calling Sidney Crosby a hot-dog. (He wouldn't have called him that had he played in the OHL, guaranteed)
Sometimes he makes himself look like the biggest hot-dog, thus voiding any credible hockey-oriented comment he made. That is why I no longer listen to Cherry but rather Pierre McGuire, Jacques Demers, Yvon Pednault, Gord Miller and Bob McKenzie because they give intelligible, HOCKEY comments and critics without trying to spice up their tv spot with Rush Limbaugh-esque controversy and heck, their ratings are just fine.

If it's on the internet, then it MUST be true!

Also, in related news...
59% percent of europeans and 55% french-canadians are more intelligent than 80% of North Americans born outside Quebec.

The whole issue is moot, should NHLers wear the visor since those high sticks are bloody dangerous? yes! Should the league enforce it? No! it's the player's own bloody choice.

Should everybody, their dog, and Don Cherry stop complaining about wether players should wear visors or not? YES!

Well, in my opinion, this doesn't settle anything. This is not about visors and if you don't know better, you are either blind or act like you are. Canada is home to two distinct cultures, plus many other minorities. Maybe this is hard to grasp from ever-white Alberta, but in Montreal, we understand that the key to social viability is respect of cultural difference. National TV has a responsibility of keeping away from this kind of xenophobic attitude, and already has taken measures to ensure they apply that. By the way, the original complaint about Cherry was made by some BC organization of parents.

Allow me to cut-and-paste freely:

"CBC Television categorically rejects and denounces the personal opinions Mr. Cherry expressed during the segment. Comments such as those expressed during the show cannot be repeated and will not be tolerated," executive vice-president Harold Redekopp said.
-----
CBC vice-president Redekopp says, Cherry's remarks were "inappropriate and reprehensible opinion as part of his discussion about the use of visors." His comments on Jan. 24, said Redekopp, "stepped beyond the role."

Cherry has been in trouble many times before for his controversial comments, which aren't limited to hockey.
-----
OTTAWA (CP) - The CBC has placed controversial hockey commentator Don Cherry on a seven-second tape-delay leash and publicly reprimanded him over what management called an "inappropriate and reprehensible personal opinion" expressed on air.

The announcement came Friday from Harold Redekopp, executive vice-president of CBC Television, and capped a day of Cherry-baiting invective that rivalled some of the former NHL coach's colourful public pronouncements.

"Mr. Cherry's role on Coach's Corner is, and has always been, as a hockey commentator," Redekopp said in a release.

"However, during the Jan. 24 show, he unacceptably stepped beyond that role by expressing an inappropriate and reprehensible personal opinion as part of his discussion about the use of visors.

-----
Columnists and high-profile francophone Quebec hockey commentators, such as Jacques Demers of the French-language RDS sports channel and Michel Bergeron of the province's TQS network, have condemned the remarks.

"It' unfair," Mr. Bergeron said last week. "We're all tired of it in Quebec."

Just a few weeks earlier, responding to reports that players were using drugs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Mr. Cherry declared that drug-use in junior hockey was limited to the QMJHL.

Mr. Cherry's on-air partner, Ron MacLean, was himself criticized for making an anti-French joke at a dinner last year.

He joked that Mr. Cherry, who was in the audience, supports French immersion: "He just figures they don't hold them down long enough."
-----
Canada's official languages commissioner has launched a probe into Cherry's comments, which federal minister Denis Coderre said were outrageous.

"I find it despicable, I am hurt. People have got to stop continually resorting to these kinds of stereotypes," said Coderre, who is from Quebec.

"This is starting to go far too far...when you're talking about this all the time and calling Frenchmen wimps, it's unacceptable," he told reporters on Friday.

Jean Augustine, minister of state for multiculturalism, later told reporters that "the government will not tolerate statements that create dissonance in our society and disrespect for others".

She and Coderre demanded that the CBC take action.

Part of the reason for Cherry's repeated remarks about "French guys" is his contempt for the concept of Quebec sovereignty. The province had separatist governments from

Look honestly i dont like some quebecers too much but you know what even if the numbers show that he was right, the way he said it was more of an insult.

How would you like it if Quebecers and europeans said the only ppl who complain are americans and canadians(apart from quebecers) and then came out with supporting numbers?...doesnt matter it's still insulting

Haven't checked every single posts here but a bunch of you are way off-track!

I live in Quebec and yes I do watch Cherry's 5 minutes of childish reflections and generalizations every now and then. Am I offended by his comments? Would you be offended by a 5 years old? He is quite simply a circus geek, if you take him for what he's not (a human with common sense and average intelligence) then you might be offended but that is your issues.

Coming along coache's corner is like walking by any other freak show, wether its a beard women, a giant, some wrestling midgets or don cherry, its great entertainment! But please, show yourself minimal respect and do not take anything he says seriously.

As for the visor, can someone explain me why Hockey is the only sport where as you grow up and the risks of injuries go up you wear less equipment? There's been so many eye injuries lately that players still not wearing the visor must be quite stupid or have the slowest learning process ever; come on, even mice in labs can learn from what happens to their fellows faster. Vision is not as good with it! Yeah right; F1 pilots can see where they're going through visors at 220 miles/hour but players can't see what's happening around them!

What is it, exposing your eyes to injuries is more manly? Or the argument that if every player was wearing a visor there would be more cheap shots or high sticks; yeah as if since the coming of the safety belt and air-bags people were driving carelessly!
