Koivu and Ribeiro fight at morning practice

Canadiens blankHabfanforever writes " According to RDS.ca, Montreal Canadiens captains Saku Koivu and Mike Ribeiro got into an intense fight at the morning skate at the Bell center. The two of them shared a rivalry since the beginning of the season for the top center spot. That rivalry turned sour this morning.

2 weeks ago, forward Pierre Dagenais shot a puck on defenseman Craig Rivet's foot causing a similar scrim resulting in Rivet being sideline for a couple games, thus ending his consecutive game streak with the Habs.

All this is simply a whole lot of frustration and fatigue and there is nothing to overreact about. People in the Montreal area as well as the media are creating "clans" when there is none. Koivu-Zednik, Ryder and Rivet vs Ribeiro, Theo, Dagenais and Perreault being the two alleged "rival clans". Unless these people have access to the dressing rooms or have bionic ears to hear behind closed doors, it is nothing but speculation.

Sigh, only in Montreal can we hear such nonsense and unfortunately it is this kind of nonsense that pushes the GM to move (not that he didn't already need to)

Both Saku Koivu and Mike Ribeiro could easily be traded, any contending team would be interested. Is it really necessary though?"

All you guys are nuts thinking about drawing up trade rumors over this. Ribeiro is having a great year but Koivu is being consistent and is playing what is expected of him.

I am happy tempers are flaring. I don't think that any hab should be lovey dovey with each other during the seasons worst slump at the worst possible time.

Ribeiro is *****y and Kiovu did not tolerate it. Hey Julien benched this guy cause he was taking extra long shifts and look what came out of it. Ribeiro has played his best hockey since then.

Koivu is the captain of this team and Ribeiro quite possibly deserved to be put in his place. He even said during the post practice interview that is was frustrations. Leave it at that until proven otherwise. Heck I fight (rarely) in scrimmages on my team but that does not drive a dividing line between the team. The only thing that has to happen is them to kiss an make up, bottle it up and puke it on the other teams.

I think Saku will be the one to get traded, he's more attractive than Ribeiro. plus more expensive

At this point it is necessary to trade one of them, the Habs are in a plyoff race distractions like this can't be happening

According to RDS, Koivu instigated the whole thing by spearing Ribeiro in the stomach.

I told you guys that Koivu didn't like ''the new kid''.

It all started when Koivu lost ''His'' winger Richard Zednik to Mike Ribeiro.

There is a ''clan'' in the dressing room, trust me. It's been known for more than a year that Koivu & Rivet had their little ''clique'' in the team.

Mike Ribeiro won't be traded, froget about it. If anything, Saku Koivu (like I suggest in an article 1 month ago) might be the one to go... Rivet could very well go too.

After the loss to Atlanta I thought that a trade would happen within a week, but now I say that a trade is imminent

The Habs can't afford to lose anymore as the Sabres are catching ground fast and a playoff participation isn't a sure bet anymore in Montreal.

Interesting addition to the story on the TSN website:

''According to RDS, Koivu speared Ribeiro in the stomach, which followed by Koivu taking a swing and then cross-checking Ribeiro in the back.

Some minutes later, while the two players met again behind the net, punches were thrown with their gloves on. Other players quickly intervened to separate the two teammates. Darren Langdon was the first on the scene and according to RDS, he hit Ribeiro before breaking up the fight.''

Ribeiro is a bit ''*****y'' and it might not please some of his teammates apparently...

I agree Koviu (contract and health issues) gets dealt before Ribiero.

But how come Ribiero isn't as aggressive against non-Hab players. He's a Lady Byng candidate against the rest of the league.

Who does Ribero think he is?

Koivu is THE Captain of the Canadiens.

The guy is a leader to those fans of and not hockey. But "life" in general.

I could tell from last year Ribero didn't have respect for the players or for the game of hockey for that matter.

Didn't this happen twice on Long Island this year between Garth Snow and Oleg Kvasha? and look at them, they are one of the hotest teams in the league.

It's easy to figure out that the Habs need leadership and grit. Two assets that neither Koivu or Ribeiro have. Both players each have their pros and cons. Ribeiro has one of the best hockey sense in the league along with soft hands but lacks in size and speed. Koivu is faster, more intense and an overall better playmaker but he is injury prone and he does not have what it takes to wear the "C" on his jersey. As I've mentionned before, it takes one cameraman and a journalist to blow things out of proportion. It is normal frustration that the players are acting out after 4 consecutive losses. There would be more to worry about if the players didn't get frustrated, meaning they wouldn't care about the team.

I do however believe that Gainey has to and WILL move within the next few days because this team is seriously lacking leadership and grit.

Possibilities: Arnott, Daze, Barnaby, Witt, Hill, Gauthier, Smith, Andre Roy and Mathieu Biron.
Please no more Huselius rumors, he's way overated being a 20 goal, 50pt player TOPS.

Fights are usually good in practice. It means the team still cares and wants to end the frustration. The Isles a few weeks back had a fight between Garth Snow and Oleg Kvasha. Coach Stirling said it was good because it got out some negative emotions and kept things spirited. I wouldn't make a big deal about it unless one of the pkayers was injured.

look if you get rid of koivu you know you have to get rid of zednick cause the baby wont play without him...

The last public fight between two Habs players was Zednik and Dykhuis last year (or the year before). And where is Dykhuis now?

Seriously though, I don't think Gainey's suddenly going to trade either one of them just because of this. He may have a meeting with both of them, or one with the whole team, or Julien may take charge of the situation himself, which would be the best way to handle it. I know he got sick of being asked about it at the press conference. Ribeiro seemed to shrug it off as just part of an intense practice. And kudos to him for that, even if he was blowing smoke. If he and Koivu do have some kind of rivalry, animosity, whatever you want to call, he's not going to bring it out in public.

The way I see it is that Ribeiro is gaining public's respect since the beginning of the season and Koivu is pushed into the background. Koivu should stick to hockey and try to gathering his team together as a good captain would do, not the opposite.

I admit that Ribeiro seems *****y; we see it on the ice and the bench, but he did his job so far, so I see nothing wrong with that.

I'm a fan of both and let's hope that none trade will happen implying these players this season.

Anyway, it's probably a storm in a teapot.

I remember in the mid 90's koivu making a great impression as the third centerman and forcing the team to trade Pierre Turgeon to St-Louis. I don't recall Turgeon or Damphousse being rude with the finish...

It was obvious that Ribeiro and Koivu where not getting along. They never talk on the ice or bench.

I suspect that Koivu was more pissed about losing the center of the 1st powerplay unit (then losing Z as a winger)... now he has to play at the point (I'd put Markov in his place anytime but I'm sure Julien does not have the guts to remove Koivu all together from the 1st PP unit)

Just a remark, the only year's that the habs made the playoff was when Saku get his cancer...Should I say more, trade him. Saku didn't explain himself to the media after the fight. He is not the man that can lead a team as Carbo or Gainey did before as Captain. Even Red Fisher said that he was selfish. The guys hasn't had pressure for years as center n.1. He can't stand that a newbie is playing awesome hockey. Against Atlanta, he has never pass the puck to Ribeiro on the the 2 men PP. His time is done as captain...and maybe n.1 player on the team.

About Koivu vs. Ribeiro. Forget it, move on. No one is trying to sweep anything under the rug. There are cliques on every team in the NHL. This sort of things happens all the time - everywhere. You're being naive if you don't believe it. Henri Richard once smacked Serge Savard in the face - both former captains and hall of famers.

After 4 losses in a row, the team was obviously frustrated. It's about time they showed some intensity and it was up to the captain to shake them up. The same captain I should mention that has been a fan favorite, a hero that beat cancer, and the team's heart and soul for the past 9 years. Granted Ribeiro is leading the team in points, they're averaging equal points/game. (Ribeiro has played more games) However, the scoop on Ribeiro is his *****iness in practices and lack of work ethic. When the team is behind a goal or 2, he attempts low percentage plays that seem very individualistic. This perhaps is why Koivu singled him out and ticked him as well as others off.

Unfortunately some members of the francophone media are the first to jump on these situations and like turning them into lingustic issues. This has been going on for the longest time and will probably always exist. (this is why some players refuse to play in Montreal). This is not a linguistic issue, nor about two clans feuding, but it does sell newspapers and attract viewers and listeners. Shows like 110% dedicate their total air time to this pointing out how many times Koivu didn't pass to Ribeiro on the PP continuously dissing Saku. They went as far as stating Koivu is jealous of Ribeiro??? Sad, and very juvenille. Week after week they focus on Hackett vs. Theo, Rivet vs. Dagenais, and now Koivu vs. Riberio. And now unfortunately some fans that don't know any better pick up on this and attend games actually booed Saku -their darling up until not long ago.

Another episode in the ongoing saga of the Montreal Canadiens. Brisebois (francophone) gets booed, it must be the Anglos, so let's boo Rivet (anglophone) to seek revenge and so on.

The intelligent fan must ignore these incidents and continue to support their team.
