Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 Greatest Games

The Great Debate blankNjDEVSFN writes "No one will ever convince the majority Devils fan that Game 7 of the 1994 ECF was the "greatest game" of the rivalry. Likewise, I'll try convincing a Canadian that the "Miracle on Ice" was the greatest hockey game EVER and he'll tell me, "1972 Summit Series Game 8." This is one of those fun debates that everyone loves to have AND is usually a "homer" about it.

Personally, I will say that the 1994 ECF will probably be the greatest series I've ever seen(im only 20) and G7 was one of the greatest games, although its outcome really really sucked! lol

The greatest game isn't necessarily the most exciting. The amount of shots can be high, and goals low...but I try to base my opinions(solely DEVILS games so you can add YOUR favorite games of YOUR team) on "edge of the seat" or "nailbiting" qualities. Perhaps, it was just the best "Team effort" put forth.

The list is endless, and since the only exciting aspect of hockey today is arbitration and CBA, here goes my list of my "favorite" Devils games.

Most exciting loss(Playoffs): G7 1994 ECF...cmon, Zelepukin with 7 to go! Damn my toe too.

Most exciting win(Playoffs): tie: for the goal lovers, G1 2000 SCF, 7 goals; for the nailbiters, G7 2000 ECF last-minute(s) Elias game winner.

Most devastating loss(Playoffs): G6 1994 ECF, the "Guarantee"

Most devastating(to the other team): Elimination: 2000 ECF G7, PHI up 3-1, lose it all; Non-elimination - G5 1995 ECF v Philadelphia...last minute Lemieux GWG.

The "heartbreaker": tie: G7 1994 ECF or G7 2001 SCF.

The "heartbreaker"(to the other team): see Most Devastation and G6 2000 ECF, Philly loses ALL momentum, comes within 1s of taking 1-0 lead into 3rd.

The "team effort": G5 2000 ECF v Philly. Balls against the wall, take it right to them.

Regular season:

Heartbreaker/Devastating loss: last game 1996 v Ottawa 5-2 loss, Devils have no chance of defending 95 Cup.

Team effort win: January 1999, Devils lose 3 games to Ottawa(this following OTT's ouster of NJ in the 98 playoffs!) and play the perfect game to win the 4th meeting(of the month) 4-1.

Most important win: 2000 last game of the year v Florida(their playoff opponent)...Jason Arnott rips a shot through Vernon for the OT winner, gives Devils the edge to sweep the first round and thus regaining the confidence lost from their terrible post-AllStar Break season.

What are YOUR favorite, favorite-team, games!

Best Win for the Flames: Game 7 of the Smythe Division in 1986. The Flames (finally) win a series against the Oilers but end up losing to montreal in the Finals. Oh, by the way Steve Smith scored the winning goal, you know the pass that went of Grant Fuhr's skate and in the net. Thank you Steve Smith.

Heartbreaker: I think every one knows what that is.

Most exciting loss: Game 6 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal against Vancouver this year. The Flames down 4-0 in the second period come to tie and send the game into overtime but end up losing about a minute in the third overtime period.

Habs rally to win the series after falling behind and go on to win the cup setting records that year for OT wins in the playoffs..greatest year ever for me :)

I'm going with Canada vs. USA in the gold medal game in the 2002 Winter Olympics as my vote for the best game I've seen..I was on the edge of my seat more then a few times in that one!

took you FOREVER to bring up the game we all knew you were going to say, The Arnott Goal. I'm a Devil fan and i have to say that game 6 in the 2001 SCF was a pretty devistating game. You can throw game 7 in there too, the lone bright spot was Elias scoring on a PP 6 seconds into it for our lone goal in the 3rd period.

Some good ones in my life that i can remember

I only saw the game once last year but the Easter Epic 4OT game 7 of 1987 Isles/ Capitals Lafontaine goal

Tor/LA 93

Game 7 1994 Devs/Rangers

Yzermans goal from no where.

My favorites though were the 2 longest games ever. Keith Primeau in the 6th overtime past tugnnet. Petr Sykora against Turco in the 5th OT.

Favorite Isles moments: Very few but a couple stand out:

Dave Volek 1993 vs. Pittsburgh Eastern Conference Semi-final game7 OT. Against the 2 time champions a little used foward named Dave Volek stunned the Pittsburgh croud.

Shawn Bates 2002 vs. Toronto Game 4. Isles Rallied to take a 3-2 lead however Shayne Corson caught Chris Osgood looking the wrong way to tie it up. Overtime seemed inevitable... Until Shawn Bates got a breakaway and drew a penalty shot. He lifted the shot above Cujo's sholder and for a team that wasnt there for 7 seasons he made a special moment even though they lost the series.

Most people think including me that the Miracle on Ice was the greatest moment in Sports History.

that being said, my fav game would have to be a game between the blues and the leafs a few years back...dont remeber the year exactly, but it was in toronto and the leafs had a 5-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the 3rd period, and the blues came back to tie it and win it in overtime, i will never forget that game...awsome...

Leafs.
Most exciting win: Game One in the Second round in 93 when #93 Doug Gilmour finally ended the game with that beauty wrap-around in the third overtime lifting the Leafs over the St. Louis Blues 2-1. Cujo was in net for St. Lou and had nearly 80 saves that game.
Most Devastating loss: Also in that same playoff year. Game 7, Western Conference final. The Los Angeles Kings win it 5-4 to advance to the Stanley Cup Final to take on the Montreal Canadiens spoiling what could have been maybe one of the best Stanley Cup Finals matchups ever. The best player to ever live, number 99 had the hat trick and added an assist for a 4 point night breaking the hearts of the Leafs and all their loyal fans.

As a Pens fan, I'm partial, but anyone who watched these games has to agree with me. the first two rounds of the 00-01 playoffs were simply awesome, with the pens beating Washington on Straka's steal and breakaway in Game 6. Then the next series in Game 7 beating buffalo on Kasparitis' fluke goal. one of the best series ever.

But the best playoff game, even though the Pens lost, was the 99-00 Game 4 between the Flyers and Pens. Five OT's and a laser shot by Primeau that broke my heart. I was dead drunk about 3:30am in State College, Pa. when the shot heard rond the world, literally, happened. I had been partying all night and retired to my place between the 4th and 5th OT, and wasted, lying in my bed watching the 5th OT Primeau scored that shitty goal. I remember hearing half of State College erupting, as it is situated smack in the middle of Pa, half the school is Flyer fans and half is Pens fan. Makes for a great atmosphere during Pit/Philly games...

follow up to the post above... EASILY the best game i've ever seen was that Flyers/Pitt game, was simply out of control... hell, that series was great(for me) with the flyers going down 0-2, then coming back to take the series 4-2... the other aspect of it all was that the playoff run was pure magic in philly because for the first time in a while very little was expected of the team with Lindros out of the lineup(we remember what happened afterwards...)

Back to that overtime game though, it wasn't that it went so long that made it amazing it was that there were legitimate scoring chances in every OT period. Posts were getting hit, great saves by both Boucher and Tugnutt, hell I nearly had a heart-attack everytime Kovalev touched the puck. Add to all this the fact that this was the follow-up to the great Andy Delmore game, high drama.

I'll never forget this exchange from my freshman roommate.

Frank: Can we go to sleep yet.
Me: No.
Frank: I have a final at 8am.
Me: We all have to make sacrifices.

We didn't talk much the rest of the semester... happily it was like 2 weeks.

When Primeau lit the light, thank god it was a great goal and not some junk goal, I ran up and down the hall screaming(partially taunting the Pens fan that lived at the other end), and you could hear people all over the Quad where I lived scream when the puck went in.

That game was an induction to playoff hockey for some of my friends, who all congregated in a room between me and the pens fan, I think we were a little too intense for them.

Greatest series I have seen so far in my life was the '03 Toronto series... simply breathtaking playoff hockey, which deserved to be the Conf. Final, not the first round. Neither team had a shot of winning in the second round after that series... the Flyers took the bullet.

nevermind the bullox,
chris

Can I create a rule for the site? Have I been here long enough? If not, such is life. If so...

ANYONE with 3 F***ING cups in the past 10 years is not in any way allowed to discuss "heartbreaking" losses... Mostly because your team could miss the playoffs for the next 5 years and you aren't allowed to complain, and because if you think any loss is all that devestating, try having that being your ending EVERY godforsaken year.

all i got on that.

There is without a doubt that any professional hockey annalyst would have to say that the 1980 miracle on ice was THE GREATEST FEAT the hockey world has ever seen. By todays standards it would be like taking a group of college scoccer players and beating Manchester United or a group of college football players and beating the New England Patriots.

My personal favorite games that had me on the edge of my seat.
1998 NCAA championship game Boston College vs University of Michigan. 2-2 tie in OT the BC Eagles clanked the post 3 or 4 times. Then out of the corner the U of M freshman Josh Langfeld wristered the puck twords the goal mouth and it pinballed its way in.

1996 West Conf Semi vs St Louis game seven Yzerman scored in the 3rd OT.

Heartbreaker/Devastating loss For me? This has to be 1995 Stanley Cup Finals getting sweeped by the Devils. Some fans in the corner held up a big sign that read " WELCOME TO HELL" and that haunted me with post dramatic stress syndrome for months. LOL

Are you guys all 23 yrs old? Have you seen any hockey before 1990? If you haven't you have no perspective.

This is the most exciting play off game I've seen, and I saw it in person: April 10, 1984 - Ken Morrow's goal at 8:56 of overtime gives the Islanders a 3-2 win in the fifth and deciding game of the Patrick Division semis against the Rangers. The Rangers had tied the game on a goal by Don Maloney with 39 seconds remaining in regulation.

The 2 best games ever were the 2002 gold medal game in the olympics where CANADA the greatest hockey country in the world beat the US and game 2 of the best of 3 series in the 1987 canada cup. in fact all 3 games of that series between USSR and CANADA were terrific games. that is how hockey should be played. sure all the games ended in the score 6-5 but there was great goaltending, hitting, terrific offensive play and even some really fine defensive plays as well. every player was skating and passing with perfection. it was truly a great site.

another great game was between the Islanders and Rangers back in 1984. Ken Morrow ended that one beating Glen Hanlon in Overtime. truly a heartbreaker for the Blueshirts. But that game gave us some great end to end action.

And as for the Leafs, no one mentioned the game where Borschevsky beat out the Wings in OT in game 7 back in 1993. that was a great game as well.

And some of the best action came in overtime. Game 5 between Toronto and Ottawa back in 2000 where Steve Thomas ended one of the most exciting overtimes I have seen where both teams were going end to end for the whole 13 minutes before Stumpy ended it.

And probably the single greatest goaltending performance I have seen was from Patrick Roy in 1986 against the Rangers. That overtime in Game 3 was the best goaltending I have ever seen. and in 1993 he did it again but 10 times over.

The biggest heartbreak was the Leafs losing to the Kings back in 1993. it stole a chance for the Habs and Leafs to meet for the cup one more time.

I'd be impressed with whoever comes up with this answer. Likely only Leaf or Blues fans would know.
