Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 Isn't it Ironic? Dontcha think?

Money blankkicksave856 writes "From an AP story:

“Marshall Faulk, now resigned to a backup role with the Rams, has agreed to a pay cut in a restructured contract that will essentially guarantee he'll end his career in St. Louis.

Faulk, an 11-year veteran who turns 32 Saturday, just finished the third year of a seven-year contract. He would have made $6 million in salary and workout bonuses in 2005.

Under the new four-year deal, Faulk gets a $2 million signing bonus this year, and will earn $2 million in both 2005 and 2006, said his agent, Rocky Arceneaux. Arceneaux said the salary would average $3 million per year over the four years of the deal.

"His motive was not wanting to leave," Arceneaux said. "Obviously with a backup, it's hard to justify making $7 million a year.”

**********

I know it’s football, but isn’t the irony just a bit too much to take? Here’s a guy who took a pay cut without being threatened with the loss of his sport. He took a pay cut just to guarantee that he will retire a St. Louis Ram.

According to the article, he was set to average $7 million per year for the next four years (the remainder of a 7 year deal he signed in 2002). His reworked contract will pay him an average of $3 million per year for the same four years.

Can you even imagine hearing the words “…it’s hard to justify making $7 million a year” out of one of these hockey player’s agents?

It’s embarrassing.

Just my opinion.

There's a new blog that came out feb. 26th as I hear it's created by an accountant for the NHL and also a minor leaugue GM, most likely the OHL. Not sure exactly but it seems cool if your into the business of the sport you should take a look

thats the thing with the NFL players restructure contracts all the time to stay with teams and to help bring in new talent while keeping the team under the cap. last season bettis took almost a 4 and a half mil pay cut to stay with the steelers.

but I dont see too many current nhlers willing to do the same.

maybe if hockey players took the physical punishment that a football player took, they would have the sense knocked into them.

(please don't justify how tough a hockey player is because a tough guy would be playing in the NHL right now.)

Its the NFL where there no contracts are guaranteed and players can be cut without any regard to past performance. Maybe he wanted to allow his team to squeeze in one more player under the CAP.This exemplifies how the CAP is so great for those NFL players.

Its not like no NHLers have ever done this and they did so under a NON CAP CBA.

How is this article even relevant to this lockout or NHL news anyhow?

Oh yea I keep forgetting that everyone seems to think that the NHL needs to copy the NFL instead of taking it own course.

How unoriginal and uncreative is it to copy?

Ok, the irony is in the fact that Faulk is a pro athlete willing to accept less money. Period. Really didn’t think I was going to have to explain that one.

Some of you people are amazing.

The “apples to oranges” of the “NHL and the NFL” was something you were supposed to be able to take for what it was. From this point forward, I will try to take into account that some people on here are apparently still in middle school, some people on here just seem to like to argue and ***** about other’s posts, and some people on here are just not very smart.

And if you can’t see how this relates to the lockout, I don’t really know what to tell you.

Maybe when I write something, I should sit and look at it first and ask myself, “What will little dweebs with too much time on their hands, extremely low IQs, and/or an apparent goal in ‘life’ to question everything and anything anyone besides them posts on HockeyTradeRumors.com think of it?”.

Sorry, I normally don’t respond when people question other’s posts, or whatever.

I felt like everyone who read this was going to be intelligent enough to get the point. I apologize for that miscalculation.

The NFL has a very different deal with the players than the NHL has. None of the contracts are guaranteed. Faulk cut a new deal so that he can continue to get paid.

As I recall, 700+ players (many of which are in their PRIME - not has beens) recently offered to take a 24% pay cut. Would Faulk have offered to take a 24% cut in the prime of his career? Hell no.

What's your point?

Ironic may not be the right word...Maybe Ignorant...Maybe Moronic...or maybe just plain Stupid!!
This happens all the time in the NFL and not just with older players who aren't putting up the same numbers they used to. Eric Moulds just did it in Buffalo to guarentee he stayed there for a while and the team could use the extra money to improve the team and become a contender. Why can't anyone see that the NFL has a system that is working and that the NHL should model there CBA after it. Some one said how "unoriginal and uncreative to copy". That was just plain stupid! The NHL did try to do something different and where did it get them? The first pro sport team to lose a whole season is pretty creative and original!! The players are just being stupid!!

The only ironic component of that *****ing song is that Alanis made a hit song about irony, while actually having no clue what irony really is. Don't ya think?

As for Marshall Faulk, yeah he's a beauty.

You see that happen alot in the NFL. Players take pay cuts, or rework their contracts, etc...In football it's a two way street. If a player isn't good enough to justify his contract, he's cut. If he agrees to take less money, the team will keep him. If a player is top in the league, the team will pay him well. Nobody gets screw in football. That's how the salary cap works. You make what you're current value is.

If that was an NHL player, they'd give some bullshit about how they played for so many years, they've done this, done that, and they deserve to make $7 million per year, even if they arn't worth it anymore.

As much as I like hockey, the players have no idea what their real value is.
