Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 TEAMS UP AGAINST CAP

Money blankgoleafsgo1991 writes "Anaheim, Colorado, Dallas, New Jersey up against cap. Look for trades! (source: www.tsn.ca)

---->Anaheim is $1,831,500 under the cap with two signings (Marshall and Popovic) undisclosed. They still need to sign Ruslan Salei and Samuel Pahlsson. That would leave them with a spare defenseman, and an extra forward or two to get, along with signing a backup. Someone might get moved, or more likely Anaheim will just settle for cheap alternatives.

---->Colorado is $831,628 OVER the cap, with J-M Liles' salary undisclosed. They however do have 8 NHL level defensemen, so two could get moved. Boughner is the most likely, along with Straskins. That would free up about 2.4/2.5 million, which would be fine given they'd have 23 players under contract.

---->Dallas is $894,798 under the cap. This however is with 5 salaries undisclosed. They only have 6 defensemen. They have 14 forwards, but 3 goalies, two of which could be back-ups. It looks like a forward or two could be gone, probably Stu Barnes. Guerin might be on the block too, though with his huge salary there might not be alot of takers.

---->New Jersey is $1,267,206 under the cap. This is without Ahonen, Elias, Hale, Martin, Friesen, and White signed, and with only 5 defensemen. They also only have Brodeur signed with no backup, and their forwards only have 1 extra. Looks like someone could be on the move. It seems like Matvichuk (with Hale, Martin, and White behind him) at 1.368 million could go, along with possibly Brylin, at about 1.5 million. Another potential candiditate could be Madden, who for his skill level is pricy at over 3 million. He seems to be a key part of their plan, but with Kozlov, Gomez, and Parise, finances might make him expendible.

Wow this is funny, goleafsgo1991 writes an article about big time teams facing the cap and he didn't mention Toronto.

See what I started? Even I couldn't help it! Let the RFA movement begin!

First of all Toronto still has three million dollars for like, one player, and that's only if Allison gets his bonuses, or if Toronto decides to use them to this years cap.

The RFA market is what I think many GMs have been waiting for. I can't see many teams picking up low-medium quality players at average or higher contracts. Teams that are feeling the cap pressure will be the clear loser in almost any trade/transaction that they will participate in between now and the trade deadline. I would expect most trades forced by cap pressure will be made to the other conference. I would be very surprised to see any division-division trades froced by cap pressure.

Dallas wants to be at 36 million so they can set themselves up well if the cap next year decreases.

If the 5 undiclosed salaries are all league minimum...Dallas is still like 1.6 million over the cap.

And as for the Leafs...they're at like 31 million with 3 players undiclosed...so about 33 million. Allisons bonuses WON'T count against the cap, though Toronto has to pay them, because of his injury history. Also, Nolan won't count against the cap. That means the leafs still have abit of room they won't need to start dumping salaries. Just like Philly is about 3million under so i didn't include them.

The Hockey News's first issue after the game is back explains it. The SALARY cap is at 39 million..that includes salary for everything. Two million of that is devoted to ancillary (extra) player costs, like insurance and other things, so that the actual cap they can't exceed with players is 37 million. If you pick up a hockey news you'll see they use that figure too.

And bonuses from what i understand, if you've played less than 50% of the games the past year or w/e due to injury you're eligible for a special bonus, administered by the league, that doesn't count against the cap, but is still payed by the team.

I can see them maybe signing white with the remaining cap space but for sure moves have to be made there.

As far as NJ is concerned, they have some very servicable players, who are getting paid a reasonable sum to use as trade bait. there are teams out there that have room under the cap and are looking for a 2nd line player such as Kozlov or Freisen. San Jose, Florida, Atlanta, (how rough for the announcer would it be to have slava and Victor kozlov on the same line?) Washington, Pittsburgh, minnasota all spring to mind. Both Players have the ability to play all 3 forward positions and have a decent mix of size and skill, even if kozlov plays more like a player 6ft and under.

In fact I remember reading a rumor that if the devils hit the cap wall that Florida was interested in getting Kozlov back on the team, I dont think he would be much of a Keenan type player, but you never know.

was this posted pre selanne signig for the ducks, because if so Teamue is getting 1 mil for this year. Also does this include the fact that chistov has gone back to russia to try to find his game? If not thats close to a million bucks taken back from the cap.

YOUR INFORMATION IS FLAUD!!! One cannot get an exact payroll figure. Go to tsn.ca, hlpa.com, or any other site... For Example look at the Rangers team payroll... (IE) Jagr is making over 8 million and all 8+ million counts towards the Rangers cap. But outside of Fantisy Land, LI. - Only half of Jagr's contract counts towards the Rangers payroll and the other half is on Washingtons cap.

Then you have players which were offered one year qualifying offers by their teams, but did not sign yet because the team and player are haggling over a multi year contract with possibly a staggard yearly contract to help with the cap. (IE): A player is listed for 1 million per year because that was the qualifying offer made by the team. Next week though the player & team agree on a 2 year deal paying the player $300,000 this year and 1.8 million the next year. But as of now the player is listed at 1 million per because all the sites list qualifying offers. On top of that, how many players signed contracts listed as undisclosed? Ect.

Lets face it! A team might look like they are having cap trouble??? But more likely your information is flaud!!! Your entire posting is unfortunately just an uneducated guess! Someone please prove me wrong... I wish we were able to get exact figures on this stuff. Its just not possible! Am I wrong?

"A hard cap including team payroll ceilings and floors will be established via a link ro a percentage of the gross hockey-related revenues as defined by the agreement. Based on 54 percent of a projected $1.7 billion in revenue this season, the team upper limit will be set at $39 million and the minimum mandated at $21.5 million, with $2 million of that amount per team dedicated to ancilary player costs.
To place this in context, 18 of the league's 30 teams began 2003-04 with payrolls greater than $37.8 million, or $800,000 MORE than the cap will be for 2005-06, though that didn't include either Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay or Western Conference champion Calgary. Indeed, the league's top 15 payroll clubs etnering this season combined to win a total of six play-off series."

I'm still amazed Dallas could be so close to the cap and have basically nothing to show for it. They're team is basically Guerin, and hopefully, Modano returns to form this year. Aside from that, there's Morrow, who isn't that good, and Arnott, who never became the player everyone thought he would. Zubov is solid on D, Boucher is alright...Turco is good until the playoffs, and then he looks as out of place as a top name free agent at a Maple Leafs news conferance in July.

Guerin's got to go. He's still a good player, but his contract is just crippling the team...but if they trade him, he'll cripple another team, so who would want him? I like Barnes, and would like to keep him, but he seems to be the odd man out. They need to free up salary, and Barnes could be moved.

The Stars are a mess right now. I think the next few years will be Guerin playing out his contract, and Modano playing out his career on a weak team, and once they're contracts are gone the re-building begins.
