 Habs & Bolts trade??

Speculationmike11 writes " Breaking news out of Newfoundland.

It was just on CBC Radio One 640 AM here in Bonavista Newfoundland that apperently home town star Michael Ryder along with fellow Montreal Canadiens' prospect Ron Hainsey and a 2006 3rd round draft pick has been traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Tampa Bay Centerman Brad Richards. They noted that the trade will be formally announced on Monday August 29th when Bob Gainey will speak with the media.

After they announced the trade they talked to Dan Ryder, younger brother of Michael and 2005 draft pick of the Calgary Flames. He had mixed emotions for his brother changing teams after having such a stellar rookie year in Montreal in 2003-2004. Dan Ryder went on to say that he is excited for his brother getting the opportunity to play for the defending Stanley Cup Champions and a proven winner but stated at the end of the interview that he was a little dissapointed that his brother Michael was leaving Canada but understands that it is part of the game and the business.

I think this is a win-win situation for both teams, but the Tampa Bay Lightning definetly got the better part of the deal. They had to get rid of one of their top 3 (lecavalier, stlouis, or richards)to stay under the cap. Both Lecavalier and Stlouis are under huge contracts and basically fill the cap for them, so they had to trade Richards. they couldnt have gotten anything better then this! Ryder was the top scoring rookie in the league 2 years ago, and Hainssey played excellent for the
Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL last year.

As for the Canadiens, they may have lost Ryder and Hainssey, but hey, who wouldn`t give that up to get a great young talent like Richards. Sure Ryder had a great year last year, but who knows what he will bring in the future, he might just be a one year wonder? And even though Richards has also really had one great year, he was able to perform during the regular season, the playoffs, and even at the highest level possible with Team Canada at the 2004 World Cup!

What a line the HABS will be able to form!
Richards-Koivu-Kovalev!
and even the 2nd line wont be to shabby,
Zednik-Riberio-Dagenais

(I cant find any other sources to verify this trade at this time)

Eklund's take:

Rumors coming out of Canada and Tampa today and tonight that Brad Richards may be on his way to Montreal (e3) for Ryder, Hainsey, and a third rounder. There have been many discussions between the two teams for over a month now and it was widely speculated until today that LeCavalier was the focal point. Now it appears as though Richards could be the prize...stay tuned...

Note: WE HAVEN'T FOUND ANYTHING ON IT YET, SO FOR NOW CONSIDER THIS AS A RUMOR. THANK YOU.

For the Eklund believers, he is now reporting the rumor... (see at the end of the posts)

Montreal just added the conn smyth winner, and a team canada center. Ryder has a good rookie year, but the habs are gettin a franchise player, and a clutch scorer. The habs won this trade from a pure player for player point of view, but the bolts had to dump some salary. Montreal just got a lot better.

HOLY SH@T.

There is a new provision in the CBA that says when you win the Stanley Cup, you must lose your #1 goalie and your Conn Smythe trophy winner ...

Ryder is still a RFA, I wonder how much he will sign for.

I guess if you're gonna make a blockbuster, might as well do it before the season starts to give the team some time to gel.

Pretty odd that no one else has this though ...

It makes sense depending on how much Ryder will get and for how many years he will agree to a contract.

It's a good trade for both sides, we shall see i guess.

Right now consider it as just speculation and unconfirmed rumor. Good chance that this will not happen, so don't think too much of it.

This trade makes no sense. Not only is Ryder and Richard pretty much the same, but montreal would have to lose one of its prospect defencemen, when the Habs lack of depht is at the def??

We should try to get Richards without giving away Ryder. Easy to say, isn't it. Anyway, we'll see monday morning.

If they did this the Habs would look like this at forward:

Zednik-Richards-Kovalev
Bulis-Koivu-Ribeiro
Perezhogin-Dagenais-Hossa
Begin-Plekanec-Sundstrom

The Lightning would be:

Prospal-Lecavalier-St. Louis
Modin-Perrin-Ryder
Andreychuk-Taylor-Fedotenko
Afanesenkov-Cibak-DiMaio/Dingman

This makes sense because Richards and Lecavalier are both two good for one of them to be a #2 centre, and the Lightning really didn't have a #2 RW besides Fedotenko. It would make more sense however if Tampa had a C prospect at C they wanted to promote, because Taylors a good third-line checker but not scoring material, and Perrin is pretty good but needs to work his way up first. Ryder's good and young though, more of a scorer then a play maker, and he'd probably go for a million or so less then Richards. And also Tampa's really thin on defense after their top 4...it being mainly 3 or 4 bluechip prospects and Nolan Pratt...Hainsey would probably be the 5th defenseman. It'd be better though if instead of the 3rd round pick Montreal gave them a centre, like one of their MANY PEI Rockets prospects.

I think i would rather have traded Vinny and his 6 mil a year contract and keep richards. Richards is a better multi-dimensional player, has produced better playing less minutes, with less skilled players, and has had a much better track record as far as additute goes. Drop Vinny and his whiny ass and keep the player who will quietly produce and do it in big games.

Basically this trade comes down to Richards centering Montreals 2nd line this year and maybe within 1-2 years is a first line center for years to come.

Ryder is comng off a strong rookie season, at 25, an age that richards shares, but has been producing at the NHL since he was 21, and will PROBABLY be a good second line winger behind St.louie for years to come, but he isnt under contract right now, and he has only played on season in the NHL after being a 8th round pick whose ECHL and AHL numbers werent all that strong until he scored 02-03, his 4th season of professional hockey.

I would have thought that they could have gotten more for richards than this . . . if its true.

Allthough Richards is a crazy player, and I could only wish to see him in a habs uniform, I don't see why Bobby, would trade a winger, for a center man????? Habs need more wingers, not centers. Now don't get me wrong, Richards has enough talent to be placed on a wing, but I don't think it's his rightfull place, he's what I would call a true centerman

Ahh, I am torn apart on this trade. On one hand, I would love to see Richards on Montreal but on the other hand, I really don't want to see Ryder go.

Now, I really don't understand why Ryder is always being rumored in trades involving Montrea. First it was Luongo, now Richards.

Now, if (and that's a big IF) this rumor is true, I can understand why Gainey would want to trade Hainsey as it seems the orginisation has pretty much given up on him but I really don't understand why Gainey would want to trade Ryder. I don't think we could have asked him for a better Rookie year and he has been one of the very few unexpected surprises drafted from Montreal who has actually produced for the team. Now, I understand it is only one season so far but he has only played one season.

I just keep wondering what Gainey doesn't like about Ryder.

The Richards Rumor
I have removed the Richards trade rumor from the blog after much speculation to its validity. I was very slow to post this at all yesterday even thought many, many folks emailed me with the rumor throughout the day..I did not believe the rumor at all at first. It wasn't until I got home from Atlantic City last night that I talked to two sources who verified there was something to it. They verified the fact that Tampa and Montreal had had discussions regarding Richards...However did not know the names. I am now going to spend a lot of time today seeing if the names are similar to the rumor that is out there..According to a source regarding this rumor, "This rumour got started on Hockeytraderumors.com, claiming CBC Radio 640 AM in Bonavista was reporting Michael Ryder's brother was claiming this trade was about to go down. Two problems with this. First, CBC employees have been locked out by management across Canada for over two weeks now, leading to little news coverage, let alone sports news coverage. Second, CBC Radio isn't heard on 640 AM in Bonavista, but 750 AM."

This is an interesting case where someone may have invented a rumor from thin air, and stumbled on a player, Richards, and a team, Montreal, that is indeed being thrown around..I will get to the bottom of it...

I think this trade would be awsome for the Bolts and for the Canadiens. I don't know if it is real, well tomorrow will tell us, but I think it have sense.

Tampa Bay that has inked two stars players, St-Louis and Lecavalier, and is now very close to the cap and there is many chance that they will lose Richards next year. Ryder had an awsome rookie year and Tampa is getting a good young player which is a good guess for the next years, and a smaller salary. Hainsey could be good too, and it provide another propect defenseman for Tampa. With the third round pick, in this situation, I think it's even for Richards, who is a yound established player that scores high every year, even more than Lecavalier. Montreal need this type of player, and has the place to fit in the salary cap.

For those who said that 640 AM is St-Johns and not Bonavista, that is 750 AM, I just want to say that St-Johns is less then 300km from Bonavista by the road, and less then 150km by the air, and I don't live there, but normally with a AM antenna the people at Bonavista should have the 640 AM from St-Johns. Also, the CBC lock-out is for all employees exept Quebec and the Maritimes, but I doubt if Newfoundland is in lock-out or not.

Anyway, even if I would like this trade happens, we will see clearly tomorrow.

The Score quickly reported on their ticker that the Detroit Red Wings had acquired Olaf Kolzig in a 3 team deal that included the Caps and Leafs. According to the rumor Detroit would receive Olaf Kolzig from Caps and Karel Pilar from Leafs. The Caps would acquire Manny Legace from Detroit and Nik Antropov and Ken Klee from Toronto. The Leafs would reportedly receive Henrik Zetterberg from Detroit and Brendan Witt from Washington. In my Opinion this deal would be great for all 3 teams. Detroit would be getting a terrific starting goalie and a average young D Man. Washington would be getting a quality back up goalie to split the time between the pipes with the young Rastislav Stana. They would also be getting a quality young forward in Toronto's Antropov and a good D Man to help teach their younger players in Ken Klee. Toronto would be getting what they want in a young talented winger and a pretty good D Man with Witt.
It would all work out great if it happens. Detroit would be ridding themselves of their loud mouth backup and dumping a little salary with Zetterberg and Legace. They would also be picking up the starting goalie the team desperately needed and a young D man in Pilar to re-energize things for this very old team. Washington would be dumping salary and whining with Kolzig and Witt. Both have asked to be traded and have expressed their dis-interest in playing for the Caps. Toronto would be dumping salary with the trade of Klee, Antropov and Pilar and would acquire a young talented forward with great expectations in Zetterberg and would also be acquiring a young D Man they have desperately wanted for 2 years now in Witt.
All in all if this trade happens as reported it would be a win win situation for all 3 clubs.
