 | Ilya Kovalchuk signs with Khimik Voskresensk of the Russian League. |
flyersfan21 writes "Don't know if anyone reported it, but in the transaction section (NHL movements) on thehockeynews.com website, it states that Kovalchuk signed with the Khimik Voskresensk of the Russian League yesterday. Just wondering if any one knows if it is true.
mikster: Ilya Kovalchuk signed a "security" contract with Khimik. September 5th is when all Russian club teams have to submit their rosters to the league, which is why Datsyuk's deadline is on that same day.
The Thrashers never reached a payroll, in their franchise history, of $30M. The highest was $28M.
They currently sit at around the $31M mark and have yet to re-sign Ilya Kovalchuk and maybe other players at the league minimum salary of $450,000.
If they re-sign Kovalchuk, expect their payroll to skyrocket up to around the $37M margin, which is high for a low-market team. Can ownership afford that? It remains to be seen as it is very questionable.
Expect the Thrashers to make a trade. It may end up being Kovalchuk, or players like Niklas Havelid and maybe Patrick Stefan to clear up some salary.
The Rangers are rumored to be inquiring of the world class player, and nothing has been dismissed by any sides. While I really expect the Thrashers to re-sign Kovalchuk soon, it will not surprise me to see Waddell trading Ilya Kovalchuk.
Note: Yes it is, check for more."

Restricted Free Agents (Score: 1) by goleafsgo1991 on Saturday, September 03 (User Info | Send a Message) | I was starting to believe the Thrashers WOULD actually get the next 4 first rounds fradt picks of the Rangers if the Rangers signed Kovalchuk...but I remembered the case of Curtis Joseph in 2002.
(1) The Leafs qualify Joseph, making him an RFA
(2) The Leafs trade Joseph to Calgary at the Entry Draft for a 7th Round pick.
(3) Joseph signs with the Red Wings for 8 million. Even under the old CBA that still, supposedly, would have meant Calgary would have gotten Detroit's next 4 1st round draft picks, and they haven't. Also why would Toronto give up a goalie worth 4 first round draft picks for 1 7th rounder.
I therefore believe that "1st round" means the first round in the draft after the 30 selections, that the picks are distributed over the number of years, 1 each year, and that the picks aren't taken from one team and given to another, but are just added by the league. That is why there arent (30x9) draft selections, there's normally about 20 more. |

Just the thought of Mariana Hossa and Ilyana Kovalchuk is lethal, if you were willing to spend 4.5 mil on a pilon like Holik, you should be prepared to spend 6 mil on Kovalchuk. Who is now with the absence of Heatley "the guy" in Atlanta, Hossa is merely there to play Robin to Kovalchuk's Batman. Find a centre for these 2, and with Lehtonen in goal, Atlanta will be lethal. |

It would suck to lose 4 1st round draft picks on Kovalchuk if we can't address the center problem via free agency or some sort of trade.
But then again... when you've got a chance to get a guy like Kovalchuk who can lead the league in goals perenially... and is only 22 years old right now... I take it. He could be apart of a youth movement, he's still very young. |

He's a very good player and all offensively. But is he really worth around 6M a year right now? That's a lot of $$$. With Atlanta getting Hossa and Holik, they are locked up for nearly 11M right now. Add a potential 6M to Kov...ouch. They have some great talent coming in and they need to keep a few more players to fill in roster spots.
And now he is 'threatening' to play in Russia. Typical tactic for a russian IMHO. He's gonna wait and let Atlanta panic. They can't NOT sign him. They can't really trade him either, with Heatley gone. The fans might not like that.
I say they are stuck on this one. |

But, on the other hand I have lived in atlanta most of my life and I know the fickle crowd they have. Just remember guys that most of these fans are inbred rednecks who are looking for a fight every night (I've sat in that crowd MANY times). It is so quiet in that arena that I thought I was going to church, unless of course, there is a fight. The flames didn't survive, the IHL knights didn't survive, and neither will the thrashers. I like the team, but bringing it there was a bad buisiness decision statistically. While I think they are idiots if they let him go, I know that they will never be able to afford him if they don't go deep into the playoffs this year which, most likely, will not happen. |

If Sather is really 'rebuilding', this kid is still in his early 20s and really improved his all around game last season. Chances are given Sather's past draft history with NYR, he'll ruin at least 3 of those 1st round picks. Even though I'm sure many teams can still afford to throw him a max contract, it sure would be interesting to see if he would want to play in a big spot light like NY.

The Rangers need to learn to build their teams through development and not trading away draft picks especially 4. He's a great player and is actually one of my fav's of the younger players but If he wants to play in Russia, let him. We all knew it was going to happen once the cap came. Some players can make more money in Europe and that is more important and then you have those like Ovechkin who chose to play where the best play and not let money make his decision for him. The big question is though is this a back up in case he can't come to terms with Atlanta? Training camp is less than two weeks. |

(Score: 1) by cwthrash on Saturday, September 03 (User Info | Send a Message) | The ownership can afford it, or at the least they are willing to spend it. They've given the thumbs up to DW to spend to the cap max if he wishes. And no, this isn't my speculation. Someone asked this question at a Thrashers function recently and this was the response.
If you factor in that the cap hit will be the average of a contract, take out Nurminen and Hurme's salary, throw three or four guys down in the minors, maybe project Coburn's salary if he start out in the bigs; then Atlanta is sitting pretty close to the TSN figure, probably a shade lower. And other than a cheap RWer, the Thrashers sure as hell aren't signing anyone else (other than Kovy of course).
The Ranger rumor was simply a suggestion by Larry Brooks. He didn't base it on anything that he had heard; just needed to fill some column space and thought an off-the-wall suggestion would get attention (are we surprised that he did something like this?). Predictably, many fans ran with this and thought it actually had some grounding. After enough rambling on the subject, the actual fact that this came soley from Brooks got completely buried in the waste. Again, no surprise.
As for a trade, it's possible. Though I doubt their first thought is to dump salary. The Thrashers are looking for a RWer, and at this point it would be better for them to trade for one. In terms of salary, Modry would be the Dman they'd want to trade. That's all up in the air though; too hard to say. I still like my thought of prying Parrish away from the Isles if the price is decent, but nobody ever listens to me.
As for Kovalchuk, he'll sign by the time camp starts. People have been all in a huff over this, mostly because of a mis-quote and several badly translated Russian articles. Like the Brooks thing, it had no grounding but people have run with it so much that they believe it to be true. A lot of people hear just a few words that they want to hear, and the rest is simply noise. More's the pity, I guess. He might be trying to squeeze a few extra dollars out of the team, but that kind of thing hasn't been surprising since Curt Flood opened the gates (sorry, I had to do it).
Is that enough of breaking a few un-truths, or will this go like the rest and fall into that category of "noise"? |

What kind of stupid gameplan is this? Either the Thrashers lose one of the best young players in the NHL 'cuz they don't have the money or they go overboard and spend way more money than they ever have before. I think he has to be re-signed. I always thought he was a better player than Heatley was, and now that they have Hossa, it would be stupid to miss out on the chance to have a 1-2 punch like these two. Kovalchuk broke out when Heatley was hurt, and he can only get better in the new NHL. I have no idea why they over-paid Holik leaving them in this situation...
I think they should sign him before the Sept 5th deadline, regardless of their plans for him. If they can't make the numbers work with the cap, they can always trade him and get something of value in return. They just have to get him under an NHL contract so they can keep their options open. A sign and trade might be where this is heading. |

So if a team has two picks in the first round, one of their own and one from another team, they have to relinquish their own pick, whether it be the higher or lower of the two picks. If you look back at the draft lists from prior years, they never went beyond more than the number of teams. The compensatory picks don't kick in until the second round. |
