STATISTICAL POWER RANKING
#1 Ottawa.........23 pts
#2 Montreal.......18 pts
#3 Vancouver....15 pts
#4 Toronto........12 pts
#5 Calgary.........9 pts
#6 Edmonton......7 pts
The Power Ranking is achieved by assigning point totals based on position within a category, as an example if Toronto is in 6th place then they receive 1 point, where as if Toronto is in 1st place they receive 6 points. Once the points have been distributed add them up and achieve the ranking. This is a scoring system I came up with to rank only the Canadian teams early in the season. As you can see the rankings look eerily similar to the official NHL standings involving only Canadian teams.
The ranking does not take into consideration the games in hand, shootout victories or losses or any individual player statistics, including goaltending or leading scorers. Ottawa is far and away the best Canadian team to date, after that its pretty close between Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, with Calgary and Edmonton hauling the rear. Using this info a team can determine what it needs to get better. Toronto simply needs to work on its defense and goaltending, where as a team like Calgary must acquire or generate more offense.
Teams like Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal are in the proverbial grey area. Where Calgary and Vancouver are doing well now but could easily nose dive as fast as they have risen to the top, where as a team like Edmonton who is basically a .500 team right now seems to have a need for both offense and defense or goaltending. The stats tell the story but it’s up to the teams to decide which story they like better.

Re: GREAT CANADIAN STANDINGS (Score: 1) by habswinthecup-again on Thursday, November 10 (User Info | Send a Message) | Ummmm! And how does Toronto end up being bunched up with Montreal & Vancouver? And for that matter how is Ottawa far and away better than Montreal?, slightley better perhaps but not far and away better.
As far as I can tell, right now the Canadian teams are as follows 1.Ottawa 2.right behind them- Montreal 3.a little more behind them- Vancouver 4.quite abit behind them- Toronto 5&6. abit behind Toronto(but catching up) both Edmonton& Calgary.
On a scale of 1-10 I would give each team 9.5-Ottawa 9.0-Montreal 8.0-Vancouver 7.0-Toronto and 6.5-both Edmonton & Calgary.

Re: GREAT CANADIAN STANDINGS (Score: 1) by Adam_0486 on Thursday, November 10 (User Info | Send a Message) | What does this really prove? Ottawa is the best Canadian team thus far... So what when it comes to teams that are "bulit for the playoff" (I know, I dont really like that phrase either) your probably better of just flipping the ranking. Heres a better ranking system
Playoff Proven Teams
1)Calgary- Cant argue with the defending Western Confrence Champs
2)Vancouver- If it wasn't for MIN they would have a cup by now
3)Montreal- 1 reason Joe Thornton enough said
4)Toronto- Usually good for 2 rounds
5)Ottawa- Beat team 4 and then u can move into 4th spot
6)Edmonton- Didnt even make the playoffs in 2003/04, we could have had all 6 canadian teams in the playoffs and you ruined it! |

Plus/Minus
Ottawa +29
Vancouver +6
Calgary +5
Montreal +2
Edmonton -2
Toronto -6
As you have stated in the past powerplay goals either for or against do not count in plus/minus. However if you like to use a simple goal difference stat, that is of course your choice. There is another stat you could add if you like. One that is more for how good a defense is.
Shots Against/Game
Calgary- 26.3
Montreal- 27.2
Vancouver- 27.5
Edmonton- 28.6
Ottawa- 29.9
Toronto- 32.1
I like your idea and how you set up the power rankings, however you really should include more team based stats.
If you take the these stats into consideration with your idea the new results are.
Ottawa- 31 pts
Montreal- 26 pts
Vancouver- 24 pts
Calgary- 19 pts
Toronto- 14 pts
Edmonton- 12 pts
Changes things around if you include more info. If you going to call something power rankings, do alittle more than just scratch the surface. There are alot more stats you can include.
Shots For/Game
Winning Percentage
Powerplay
Penalty Killing
Do teams blow the lead in the third, or do they come back?
I really do like your idea and hope you keep updating with more stats involved. If you would like a good place to find stats easily. If you go to nhl.com, they have an amazing stats set up.

Beyond Ottawa, I think we'll just have to wait and see.
Montreal and Vancouver's early points will definitely come back and haunt the others late in the season. But wins is all that matters. |
