According to Dr. Mulder (Habs Dr.), the drug taken was for hair growth, it's not a steroid. The product can be used as a masking agent for some steroids but according to the team Dr. Theo has been taking that on and off for 8-9 years, prescribed by a dermatologist.

This product is not on the banned list.

Theo is a skinny MF....the steroid this product can mask if for massive muscle growth(Nandrolone).

Theo should have joinned Lafleur club instead !! The older one might remember Lafleur was the spoke person for Hairfax in the 80'-90's.

medication for which he tested positive is Propecia, which is used to help hair growth.

he was tested positive on the random testing going on for the Olympics (test took place Dec. 12).

it's been banned in the NHL also, since 2 years ago, but only a case by case basis... which means players who are tested positive need to explain why they take it.

he's been taking this medication for the last 8-9 years.

it's banned because as a side effect, it can contribute in masking the consumption of some steroids in urine samples.

however, it is still possible to verify the use of steroids even for people using Propecia.

Canadiens' doctor says there's no way Theo uses steroids.

Theo is NOT and will NOT be suspended.

This may be the kind of stupid thing that takes the pressure off Theo so he regains his confidence.

He did not test positive for a steroid but for a masking agent which he took under the care of a licensed physician.

Too much ignorance on this site. So many people are talking without even know WHAT they are talking about. Jose Theodore KNEW that what he was taking was illegal by official standards, HOWEVER, this drug he is taking, Propecia is a medication prescribe to prevent hair loss, something that is current in his family. There are also some exceptions issued for this drug to be used as a therapeutic medication for hair loss purposes, which is Theodore's case. Having taken this drug for the past 8-9 years, he wished to continue to take and therefore filled ALL the required forms and paperwork for him to be allowed to take this drug. When he took the test he KNEW he was going to test positive for this drug and he will appeal the consequences of his positive testing. No consequences will result of this and people should just keep their mouths shut instead of blowing it way out of proportion as usual.

Here's what closes the story... statement by NHL deputy commissioner:

"Today's announcement will not impact Jose Theodore's eligibility
to play in the National Hockey League, regardless of the ultimate
resolution of the ongoing appeal proceedings before the
Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports (the "CCES").

Mr. Theodore also will not risk NHL sanctions as a result of any
future positive test for this particular substance within the
NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program because
he made a timely and proper application for a Therapeutic Use
Exemption for his longstanding medically prescribed use of Propecia."

I think its safe to say that the hair restoration drug is not masking a perfromance enhancing drug as Theo and the Habs have been sucking exaust fumes of the Top 8 eastern conference teams.

Now if pretty boy Theo would stop worrying about his looks and return his focus back to the game he ONCE dominated.....the habs can still salvage a decent playoff run. Fortunately, Huet has been playing above expectation.

This announcment regarding the positve testing is about as lame as Pot smoking gold medal snowboarder Rob Rebilati(sp?) being questioned about the perfromance reducing drug of pot and Silken Lauman being removed from the World championships due to a postive test for cough medicine.

Rules are rules and they are in place for a reason but it is plain to see, Theo is not benefiting from this at all and no further action should be taken by the IOC and international sport governing bodies.

Slightly off-topic.

Can anyone actually give a good reason that consenting adults should not be allowed to take drugs to enhance their performance?

It seems to be common sense, and just second nature that it's cheating, but why? Sports are the only aspect of life that it is "wrong" to take drugs to enhance one's performance. One can take drugs to enhance one's appearance, medicines are drugs, and what about birth control? If there was no rule that taking performance enhancing drugs was illegal, what basis would there be to make a rule?
