Lindy Ruff Explodes About Tucker Cheapshot

Sabres blankSabresFan220 writes "Sabres coach Lindy Ruff was livid after the Sabres vs Leafs game in Toronto Monday night over a knee-on-knee hit Darcy Tucker made on forward Jochen Hecht, playing his first game back from a knee injury.

The Sabres won the game 3-2 in the shootout earning the necessary points to lock up a playoff spot.

The incident in question occurred in the 3rd period after Mike Grier leveled Darcy Tucker cleanly in open ice. Getting up from the hit Tucker was upset and immediately charged after the 1st Sabre he saw, being Jochen Hecht. Hecht avoided Tucker's shot at his head, but Tucker did hit him knee on knee. Hecht retaliated taking a shot at Tucker and received a penalty for it. Hecht did not come back on the ice after the incident. Apparently the injury is serious, although its severity is not known right now. Hecht is expected to be out "weeks" as indicated by Ruff in his post-game comments.

After the game Lindy Ruff was extremely upset, making several accusations at Tucker and the officials for blowing the play. In short Lindy has demanded that Tucker be suspended.

This incident immediately brings to my mind the Darius Kasparitis hit on Tim Connolly earlier in the year. As you all may remember the hipcheck on Connelly was called dirty by some and clean by others. Connelly was injured on the play and missed substancial time. This injury to Hecht appears to be more serious and detrimental to the Sabres' playoff success. Hecht is an important player for the Sabres who are now guaranteed to be in the playoffs. Without Hecht, the Sabres are missing possibly their best all-around player. While Hecht was recently injured the Sabres had that 6 game losing streak, and before the injury Hecht's line with Briere and Dumont was on fire. If Jochen Hecht does miss substantial time, it will definitely effect the Sabres' playoff hopes.

You can listen to Lindy Ruff's comments here:

Note: According to TSN, Darcy Tucker will not be suspended by the league"

Tucker should not be able to get away with this. He has some real ego problems. Just because someone gets the best of you on a nice hit doesn't mean you can throw a hissy fit and injure the closest player to you. This guy is unreal.

Ruff has every right to be upset. This could well be considered as more serious than the Kasparaitis-Connolly hit earlier this year (which I also thought was a cheap shot), because this is so close to the playoffs, and Hecht is definitely one of the better Sabre forwards.

Bottom line, you can't really defend what Tucker did, unless you absolutely love cheap-shot hockey. He deserves a suspension. This wasn't a Scott Stevens-style vicious but clean hit. And it came Grier drilling him cleanly. Maybe Tucker is getting frustrated with having a bullseye on his back, but it doesn't excuse what he did.

How this is comparable to the Kasper incident, save for the fact that it involves the Sabres I have no idea. I mean kneeing is a penalty -- one of the more serious -- while "hipchecking" is not an infraction. This was a blatant attempt to go after a guy and the method used to get at that player was illegal. Ruff said it best, the play was "A JOKE". There is no place for plays like this in the NHL. Tucker is more talented than the guys normally responsible for this kind of thing and he needs to be punished severely. He can be better than this. The play was so bad it reminded me of Domi's unnecessary cheap elbow to Scott Neidermyer in 2001. Clean this shit out of the game.

The league is so biased about things like this. Brendan witt gets suspended for a game, but Tucker doesn't?! Something smells. It seems like certain teams are beloved. Maybe because of their attendance figures or history to the league? I'm not sure, but it's not right for one guy to get suspended and the next to not even get a slap on the wrist. Colin Campbell needs to start rethinking his job.

If my team were playing Toronto in the first round of the playoffs... Out of necessity, Tucker would need to be neutralized! There are many many many ways to do it... But from the drop of the puck he would have to be "consistantly" hit and beaten every chance there was. If not??? Darcy "Mother" Tucker will take out at least one of your top "skilled" players for the rest of the playoffs. If not 2 ,3, or maybe 4 of your top skilled players if left "unchecked".

But as hockey fans one has to accept there are players like this in the NHL and there always will be. Just like a team prepares for the other teams top players... One must also prepare for the players who go out of their way to take out your best players. A tucker type player should always make a big difference on how a team prepares to play such an opponant. Especially in a 7 game series. If not? The results could be disastrous! What ever method is used to neutralized a mother tucker type player... One must never give up too many power play opportunities, unless the game is out of reach either side. Then its just a free for all - try to make it so that he is too beaten up to hurt any of your top players the next game.

I mean, what's the alternative??? Have your coach cry about how a goon needs to be suspended? Or bring the fight to the enemy! Unfortunately, I dont see any players like Essa Tikkenan aound anymore who could shaddow a "Tucker" all game long! Do you?

Double standard is right! Early on in the season, I noticed that the Leafs seemed to enjoy more 5 on 3 power plays than any other team. I would love to see the stats on that. It can't be because they are so "disciplined" either.

Don't kid yourself...the powers-that-be are definitely rooting for the Leafs to make the playoffs and they will do anything they can to make that happen (not TOO obvious though).

It will be so sweet not to hear about them this year in the playoffs. Sooooo sweeeeeeet (sorry...am drooling here)

The league needs to se standards with suspensions. Right now there is too much discretion with Campbell. Should punishment be based on intent? Or is it only going to be based on the result?
Is reputation going to be a factor?

What Bertuzzi did was as disgusting... but that suspension was based solely on the end result... not the intent.

Here is what gets me. Breiere gets suspended for two games for inadventantly high sticking Leetch while Tucker yet again gets nothing for a blatant cheap shot.

Pat Quinn and Randy Carlyle get fined for comments on new rules, the veteran player, Steve Yzerman, doesn't.

Daniel Briere gets suspended for an accidental highstick (due to a Bruins players trip) because it was on a legend, Brian Leetch.

Chara and Murray get a fine and suspension for the instigator in last 5 minutes, Gretzky and Doan, do not.

And now Darcy Tucker gets no suspension, because he's a Leaf, and Bettman and Campbell are *****ing away from the Toronto media. I love Tucker, he's one of my favorites, but what's right is right.

This is the second time this year where an action of Darcy Tucker's gained sport-wide notoriety. The first time, when he hit that guy with his own helmet during a fight, he should have gotten a game suspension for that. That was written off WAY too easily by most and excused by way too many in the Hockey media.

From what I've seen of the video, that's the text book definition of intent to injure. There were like 4 different calls you could have made on that play against Tucker. Did Hecht even HAVE the puck? Tucker is an embarassment to the entire league.

I wish I could hear the league office's explanation as to why Tucker's hit "did not warrant further disciplinary action." Of course I have to first ask what original disciplinary action was there? Tucker was never penalized, Hecht received a penalty, and Toronto scored the tying goal basically on the ensuing powerplay. He was rewarded for diving like a princess after Hecht pushed him and he was not suspended for intentionally injuring Hecht. Watching the replayHecht is not that big of a player, and yet you watch Tucker go flying after Hecht pushes him?

That aside the only compensation that Sabres fans get is the realization that Hecht will most likely get to be in the playoffs, and Tucker and the Leafs will be on the golf course. I wouldn't wanna play golf with Darcy Tucker though, he'll fall over during a swing and demand a gimmie and then take out my knees if I beat him.

The only thing you can accuse tucker of is going after Hecht head. Which is cowardly and cheap to begin with, but on the same token the guy who hit tucker hit his head with hands. Then tucker hit Hecht in the head with his hands up.

OK everyone.

I know you hate the Leafs and I know you love to hate Tucker. Let's try to get some perspective here though.

I saw the hit. I saw it over and over again. was it a cheapshot, yeah, I would have to say it was.

BUT... it is not unlike about 5 such hits throughout the league each year. As far as knee on knee, I see those just about every game also. I think Tucker went to rough the guy up and ended up sticking the leg out because he was going to miss. It was not all that obvious. Like I said I have seen worse. As far as himi not being able to take a hit...

GET a freaking grip. This guy gets targetted every night by most teams and always shows up and if you want to drop, he'll show up then too. Could it maybe, just maybe, be that he is really frustrated with how the season has gone?

I seriously doubt that tucker worked up some plan to go out there and simultaneously hit the guy in the face and the knee to injure him.

The thing is, the league didn't see where this warranted a suspension. They had EVERY opportunity to throw the book at a team out of the playoffs anyway, whose fanbase won't crumble anyway, in the BIGGEST market for exposure... and they didn't. They didn't send that message.

Because they felt, as did I, that it was a dirty hit, probably deserving of a roughing penalty, but not anything really outrageous.

Finally, Hecht is out for 2 weeks. He will be back, refreshed, in time for the playoffs.

Pat Quinn said it best when he implied that Ruff's comments were to fire up his own squad, who, co-incidentally, have not been showing all that much fire lately. It is the OLDEST TRICK in the coaching book. Nobody does it better than Quinn.

I like Ruff, with the Leafs out I am cheering for the Sabres. I just like the way their team plays. I am not blinded though by all the rhetoric that paints him out to be the most evil villain to ever don skates though.

Holy crap, did you see the crap Atlanta dished out when the game in Ottawa started to get out of hand?! That is not the first time this year that that team was clearly out there head-hunting...

but instead we concentrate on a, dirty, but not all *that* bad hit by Tucker.

If you truly believe Hecht is seriously injured, I have some swampland in Florida for you. He probably tweaked his knee a bit and they are keepig him out to rest him and to create something for the team to rally around. If you don't think that happens in sports. You are naive. It is the EXACT reason why leagues won't institute an eye for an eye policy...

The hit was clean, there was no intent to injure. Hecht leaned out of the way to avoid the hit from Tucker and got an inadvertant knee on knee. That's it. That's why he's not suspended. As for the Kaparitis comparision it's the same situation, Connolly jumped out of the way and exposed his knee. Which is why he got hurt. Tucker clearly didn't stick his knee out at the last second to "get him" which is why there was nothing wrong with the hit. I was at the game, I saw the replays many times on TSN, Sportsnet, The Score, The NHL Network and listened to comments from 640 am and the Fan 590 and none of them said that it was dirty. Did anyone ever consider that he was already injured? This is now the third time Hecht has been out with the same knee problem since the Olympics. Maybe it's not fully recovered yet. Ruff's comments were retarded. He only said that to take the heat off his struggling team. That way there wouldn't be any questions about how the team was playing, everyone wanted to talk about the hit.
