 Ziggy Palffy out of retirement?

Pittsburgh Penguins blankmojo19 writes "The Score was reporting that Ziggy Pallfy was playing hockey in Slovakia opening the doors to speculation he could return to Pittsburgh in February.

He would have to wait until February because a player can't come out of retirement until one full calender year. The way Pittsburgh's payroll is looking right now, they could afford to bring him back (at the $5 Million salary he was making before he retired). If Pallfy wants to come back he could be a big boost to the team late in the season.

Palffy has 713 points in 684 games in his career, and had 42 points in 42 games with Pittsburgh last year."

Interesting offer.... but I think I'll pass. I wasn't really impressed with him last year or his $5 mill. contract. I saw the game where he got clobbered and decided the money wasn't worth sacrificing his body anymore. The next day came up with the previously unmentioned shoulder injury rational -- and he was retired. The Pens have enough contact averse aging "stars" who don't seem able or willing to go after the puck if it means they might get hit. I would much rather have Morozov back for $3 mill.

I heard Bure was coming out of retirement too. But neither he nore Pallfy will actually be back in the NHL.

Why? Crosby is playing well with Armstrong, and Ekman seems like a pretty good match with the two as a slightly more responsible back-checker... Malkin looked crazy good in his debut, and while I don't think pinning him as another 100-point rookie is fair, it's really not totally unlikely, Malone is a pretty skilled young guy and Recchi is playing the role of veteran teacher type... LeClair is working with Staal, though as a scorer I'm not sure how effective he is anymore, and you have guys like Ruutu, Quellet and Roy filling out the roster. It would be a waste of not only money, but roster space, playing time, and VALUABLE experience for some very skilled young players. The LAST thing this team needs is another scorer, especially one that doesn't score, and comes with a high price, AND who won't be a good influence on the younger guys in the locker room. I could see them going after a player like Jim Dowd (though I think he might have retired), or Trent Green, or a similar player, someone with some snarl who can play the check line, a guy who will work hard and try to instill that on the younger players, not some cherry picker who can pick cherries...

A lot is to be said about this:
  1. Palffy was misused last year, especially when they tried to make him play defensively. Not only was he not good at it, but his offense suffered miserably. Having no fun was probably a major influence in his retiring.

  2. This would not be a transaction, but just an addition of a player without need to give up assets. And if at the time Palffy would be allowed to join the team the Penguins still have all of or any of Andre Roy, Eric Cairns, John LeClair, and Karl Stewart just to name a few, I see little lost on adding Palffy and replacing any of the above. Who are we kidding?! Nothing would be lost if he replaced all of them combined.

  3. Palffy retired mid-January, somewhere close to the 20th of the month, and that is when he would be allowed to return to the NHL after having filed retirement papers. Typically this is the crucial time when teams start their league-wide evaluation in the standings and really find out if they are in position for a run in the playoffs or not. And on a team that so far is strapped for offense, it certainly would help to have an added offensive weapon.

  4. A good question would be if because of his retirement, if his contract would have to be re-enacted, or simply scratched and a new one made up. If a new one would be needed, then a more favorable and shorter contract for the Penguins could be drawn up, with incentives being the key.

  5. NHL players do not get paid for time off, or the post-season. That means that the Penguins in the worst case scenario would only have to pay Palffy's salary from somewhere in mid-January to the end of the season. That translates (for this year) to basically half his annual salary (or a little less), and ditto for his cap hit, since time not spent playing is not counted towards the cap, and not the yearly numbers people are using in their posts. Doing the math: The contract was 3 years for $13.5M or $4.5M yearly cap hit, and he was to be paid $3.5M for last season, $5.5M for this season, and $4.5M for next season. Taking half of the numbers for this year that would translate to $2.75M salary and $2.25M cap hit. Although it might be a bit steep considering many different angles, it is certainly easily manageable this year for the Penguins from every angle.

  6. The rumors of Palffy having a second thought and wanting to return to Pittsburgh are nothing new. They have been around for quite a while, and nothing more than a lukewarm rumor has ever materialized from it.

  7. If by mid-January the Penguins have continued to have a season of such low scoring, they might be so far off the playoff pace that Palffy, or even a cloned Ovechkin or Vanek (how I wish the Penguins would have drafted him) would not be enough to get them into what I expect will be close contention for the last 2-3 playoff spots in the East.

  8. It was still extremely unprofessional from Palffy what he did and how he went about it. Although there is a new GM in place for the Penguins, some serious consideration should be given to just passing up on the offer, unless he was going to make a difference in winning a cup, and the Penguins will not win a cup with or without Palffy at this point.
The bottom line is that any of this talk needs to be frozen until at least after the New Year, because where the Penguins are in the standings, and how the team looks at that time will make a big difference in Shero deciding whether to welcome Palffy back or not, if any of this old rumor is true.

Palffy has always been one of my favorite players. When he retired I actually posted on this site he would come back to the NHL and I still believe it. Whether the Penguins want to keep him or trade him, I'm sure many teams will be interested in acquiring a proven goal scoring threat with a couple years left in his career.

This post has brought out some negative feelings towards the Pens vets - especially Leclair. Fans will remember that he came on strong late in the season last year -- but the word is that he had a lazy off season where he spent very little time on ice or with a stick in his hands. After watching him closely last night (against the Islanders) and on Wednesday (Devils) I'm no longer going to criticize him. He is starting to sharpen his game. He's been in good positioning, is fighting for pucks, and making smart passes. At times you can't tell its him out there before seeing his number -- he looks like one of the younger big guys. I'm tenatively impressed at this point, if he is able to step it up one more level he will deserve full fan respect.

why would you bring back a guy who quit on the team in the middle of the season just because the team was struggling? hes not worth the trouble of figuring out if his heart is really into it. plus his salary is rediculous for a washed up 2nd liner............
