More Samsonov News
Edmonton Oilers assistant general manager Scott Howson issued a "no comment" Tuesday when asked if the team had any interest in acquiring Sergei Samsonov , who was waived by the Montreal Canadiens .
Samsonov had his moments during Edmonton's playoff run last season, but is in the midst of the worst offensive season of his career in Montreal.

Most Important Stretch of the Season
The Rangers have their most important stretch in their next 10 games because they do not have that tough of a schedule and they play a few teams that they are chasing. In the next 10 games they have tampa home, washington away, carolina away, philadelphia away, chicago home, new jersey away, new jersey home, columbus home, montreal home, and pittsburg home. They have 6 home games and 4 away games. They have 4 games against terrible non-playoff teams which they should be able to go 4-0 in. They have 6 games against playoff teams but 3 of them are 6th, 7th, and 8th in the conference. They need to go 3-2-1 in these games. That would put them at 7-2-1 and in the 10 games and getting 15 points out of a possible 20 points. They would be 6 games over .500 overall with 18 games left and they would probably be in 8th or 9th. If they were in 9th then they would be probably only 2 points out with 1 or 2 games in hand. They need to start playing better and it starts with a crucial game against the 7th seed Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night.

Maurice blows, lets bring back Burns
As you may know, I hate Paul Maurice, JFJ too. So if I ran the Leafs, here's the changes I'd make.
First, go get Billy Guerin. Fast power forward. Perfect winger for Sundin. Trade Tlusty. You bleeding heart liberal Canadians who are on this forum will hate me but I can't take another European. I'd be glad to get rid of Tlusty for him. Or even just sign him in the off season. Sign him for $3.5, Sundin for $4.5, and Tucker for $3.5.
Then. Get rid of Paul Maurice and John Ferguson. Terrible coach, terrible GM. No more Euro's, get them the hell out of here. John Ferguson Jr probably votes NDP. Bring back Pat Burns as GM, Pat Quinn as coach. Ya ya, tell me I can't get over the past, blah blah blah, the fact is, in the past, we won.
Trade Bryan McCabe to the Islanders. He'll waive his no trade clause for that. Do it in a three way deal, get Miroslav Satan, then flip him to Florida for Todd Bertuzzi. Ya, ya, give me that bullshit they're rebuilding blah blah blah. They're not rebuilding, or they'd trade Jokinen. They're just dumping UFAs because none of them want to come back to play for such a disaster of an organization, I know, I'll get 1996 versus 1967, blah blah blah. Re-sign Todd Bertuzzi at $3.5, if he wants to play here, he'll take it.
Re-sign O'Neill and Peca at what they currently cost.
Trade Raycroft for Dan Boyle, who costs $3.625, Tampa dumps some salary, gets a goalie, we replace that joke of a defenseman McCabe.
Trade Kyle Wellwood for Curtis Joseph. Re-sign Joseph for $1.5. Screw Wellwood, over rated and soft, career 50 point player at best, but he'll demand a lot of money because he'll get padded stats by playing with Sundin. Trade Pohl, Steen, and a first for Brule. The kid will be a star if he can get past the injuries. We have deep scouting, we can get a better player in the late rounders anyways. Besides, with this team will win a cup, and it'll be like a second rounder.
Sign Roberts at $1.5
Guerin-Sundin-Bertuzzi
Tucker-Peca-O'Niell
Kilger-Stajan-Ponikarovsky
Brule-Antropov-Roberts
Green-Battaglia
Kaberle-Kubina
Boyle-Colaiacovo
White-Gill
Joseph
Aubin
The cap is apparently going up, and that teams payroll is $44 475 000, and will win a cup. Go figure.
Before you post your disagreement, I want to remind you, I am right, and you're not.

Is youth and speed the way to go in the current NHL? Yes
Is that what the leafs are missing? yes
Can Pat Quinn adapt to the new NHL? Maybe
Is Razor better than joseph? yes
Does JFJ need to go? Absolutely( you actually made sense on this one)

OK, Samsonov going back to Edmonton doesn't really make sense to me. Why would Sammy go back to a team that barely played him?? If anything I would see him going back to Boston. The Edmonton Sun is just blowing hot air!!
Lalime just played one game this season!!! I remember him having several good games in his career but its his consistency thats lacking. Give him another 10 games then tell me what you think.
Now about the Leafs...... well.... you're intitled to your opinion I guess? Maurice is the reason why the Leafs have a young team. Maurice is the reason why this team is still in a playoff race. It was Maurice's decision to give Pohl, Stajan, and Steen more ice time which is now resulting to points. Maurice is the one that had Faith in Raycroft and brought up his confidence which is resulting in some of his best goal tending this year. How could you hate Maurice if he hasn't hurt the team... he's doing the opposite of Quinn. If you want Quinn back then why don't you go get Aki Berg back along with Domi. This is the new look of the Leafs and in case you haven't noticed, they are not doing too bad.
I do agree with going for Doug Weight but I'm not sure if you have any idea how well Leafs prospects Tlusty and Kulemin are doing. They are the only hopefulls the Leafs have besides Justin Pogge. I would trade a current roster player(s) for Weight.
I like the idea of Brule I know this kid is really going to step it up but he is a small guy too that has been injured quite a bit. Maybe trade him for Wellwood and a draft pick?
Pohl is just going to get better... I say keep him! Great third line centre.
Keep Raycroft, Tucker, O'Neill and Peca.
No one will pick up McCabe's contract...we're stuck with him. |

Re: A collection of submissions (Score: 1) by rygetzlaf on Thursday, February 08 (User Info | Send a Message) | You really think that Tampa Bay.. after taking a chance on Denis and him coming up pretty short of their expectations.. would still take another chance on a goalie who is constantly up and down??? I highly doubt that. And Wellwood for Joseph just doesn't make any sense, that would be sacrificing one of their best young guns for a goalie who's about to lace up his skates in a year or two. The Leafs DON'T need huge slow players.. now Guerin is not that slow nor huge, but there are many players who've established themselves in the NHL who are worth getting that are NOT 35 years+! The reason why the Leafs have been doing well lately is because of their speedy and shifty players like Pohl, Steen, Stajan, etc, etc. If their first line was Antropov, Poni, and Sundin, they'd already be on the golf course. Why not get someone who is having a tough time on their team but is still majorly producing in the NHL.. like Brendan Shanahan?? Getting slow first line players will just bring the team down I think. The greatest teams in the NHL right now have a great mix of speed and grit. Anahiem has classy players like Selanne and Neidermeyer.. but does that stop the grittiness? I don't think so! Anahiem players have had the most fights this year then any other team in the NHL, and it's for good reason. If the Leafs are to make the playoffs and have a decent chance at the cup, they're going to need to shake things up quite a bit. But signing has-beens at the deadline in hopes of a 1st round or 2nd round playoff exit is just too fimiliar and boring.

Re: A collection of submissions (Score: 1) by 92-93 on Thursday, February 08 (User Info | Send a Message) | i'm not going to justify Leafy's comments with any sort of sustained response. but one wonders if Damien Cox has been reading my (or Aetherial's) posts here on HTR since November, because this is PRECISELY what have been talking about:
" As far as this year's Leafs go, without knowing all that JFJ knows - the players who have been offered, the status of contract talks with Darcy Tucker, the precise health of Mike Peca - here's how my game plan would work. Tucker has to be either signed or traded by the deadline, an issue clearly complicated by the fact he's not coming back soon. As I said last week, three years, $10 million is the number, and if that's not acceptable you move him for picks or prospects, then use his cap space to acquire help. That could be combined with the cap space made available by the long-term injury to Peca, if the Leafs are certain he won't be back until late in the regular season at all. If the Leafs need to add a younger player to make a deal worth it, the only one of their NHL or near-NHL youngsters that it would make any sense to move would be one of the younger defencemen like Brendan Bell, Staffan Kronwall or Andy Wozniewski. Bell, in particular, would have market value right now.
So that's for this trade deadline. Beyond that, you keep drafting and developing a younger core while trying to add intelligently through free agency. Keeping Mats Sundin around for stability is a must. The most significant development of this season, it would appear, is the possibility that Andrew Raycroft may indeed be a No. 1 goalie and that both Ian White and Carlo Colaiacovo look like keepers."
Raycroft is still young and inconsistent. but a good veteran back-up would be huge for the leafs. |

If they did they could lose him for next year too, and maybe never get him back.
Does this guy even read the submissions on this site, or is he too busy screwing the family pooch. Just like the leafs would be doing if they made such dome deals. They'd be better off promoting the whole marlies team than make those moves.
Yes, like he says, he lives in the past, and the reason they won is becasue they could buy their way out of any situation if they wanted to. Again the same tired as leaf solution, mortgage the future for the ILLUSION of now.
The prices he lists are just as dumb. Guerin is no longer worth 3.5 million. Bertuzzi can't be had for 3.5 million. I suppose in his mind the leafs could deal Antropov and Poni to Pittsburgh for Crosby and Malkin, and Aubin to Washington for Ovechkin. Then Call up Pogge and the Leafs would have the best tandem in the NHL.
OH, and don't forget to bring back Dougy as captain, since Sundin is such shit.
Then the leafs would be:
Ovechkin-Sundin-Guerin Malkin-Crosby- Bertuzzi tucker-Stajan-Steen Kilger-Steen-Oneil
Kaberle-Kubina McCabe-White Colaiacovo-Gill
Raycroft Pogge
A salary 60 million, with 40 million to spare under the new 100 million dollar cap limit.

Firstly, Quin is "old school" hockey. He had a pretty descent team last year and didn't make the playoffs. The point is, he's a coach that can coach stars, not young developing players. This is evidenced by the developement of Steen, Stajan, & White, all of whom were not doing well under Quinn, but are thriving under Maurice. Obviously there's more experience, but when's the last time Quinn took a young player under his wing and developed him into a star? A guy like Hitchcook can do that, and so can Maurice. Consider what he's done for Jeff O'Oneil, Battaglia, and young defenseman like White, Bell.... enough said...
Ferguson is just doing what he's got to do. The leafs were in a bad position when the Cap system was implemented. Lots of teams got screwed because of all the high priced players on their roster, ex. St. Louis, Vancouver, Philieadelphia, slowly Colorado is feeling the effects too. The point is the Leafs aren't dead last, but they aren't the best either, they are in the hunt, and part of that reason is because of Fergson. He probably didn't do as good of a job as Ken Holland in Detroit, but Detroit has a system focused on developing players. Before most teams were doing that, Detroit is the team that drafted players like Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Federov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Tohams Holmstrom... The Wings had a system for scouting and developing, and look where that has lead them, they have young stars like Nicklas Kronwall, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, Jason Williams, everyone except for Kronwall, are not 1st round picks. (not to mention that NEITHER Konstantinov, Federov OR Lidstrom were 1st picks either). The leafs never had this type of developement, they got lucky with hplayers like Kaberle and Danil Markov, but their focus was never on developing... anytime the farm team was developing young stars like Brad Boyes, or a Steve Sullivan, or Fredrik Modin, they were traded away... thank you Pat Burns Bill Watters and Pat Quinn for that.
Look the point is, Ferguson is a good GM, not the best, but better than your selections. I'll point out some of the mistakes Leaf GM's have made over the years, I'm not sure who they are, but Watters, Quin or Burns had a hand in them.
1996 - the New York Islanders traded Wendel Clark, Mathieu Schneider and D.J. Smith to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty, Kenny Jonsson and 1st round selection in 1997. The leafs were doing horrible those years, in a rebuilding phase, yet they go out and trade for stars, giving up future. That 1st round selection ended up being ROBERTO LOUNGO.... I'm not sure the leafs would've picked Luongo, but they had a #4 Overall that year, they knew their team wasn't that good, and would likely not make the playoffs, but the GM still did it.
1987 Draft, the leafs had the 3rd overall pick, the GM was urged by his counts to take a "smallish Centre" from the WHL, instead the drafted Luke Richardson, who became nothing but a Defensive Defenceman, but the Centre they overlooked turned out to be Joe Sakic.
1999 - The leafs had a developing players in their system, playing on the team, usualy 2nd or 3rd line, they placed on waivers, I don't know why, but his best years were ahead of him. The player was Steve Sullivan, whom the leafs got in return for the Doug Gilmour Trade
2003 - this was definitely in the Quinn Era, when he traded a 1st, Alyn McCauley and Brad Boyes for none other than Owen Nolan. Look I can understand why McCauley was traded, to create roster space, but I dont understand why they would give up the future, like a 1st and Boyes. Maybe the 1st would make sense,
