Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 The 2010 OLYMPICS

Team Canada blankKingCanada writes "

Its approaching!! Only a few years away!! The 2010 OLYMPICS!! woo cant wait!! The world class tournament will be played on Canadian soil so our nation better ice one helluva team. With the NHL being fully loaded with all-star Canadian talent i dont think we will have a problem with that.

Anyways i was reading an article at the hockey news that had a possibly roster for the Americans.

http://thehockeynews.com/en/news/news.asp?idNews=26183

Goalies: Ryan Miller, Rick DiPietro, Jeff Frazee
Defense: Jordan Leopold, John-Michael Liles, Brooks Orpik, Ryan Whitney, Erik Johnson, Jack Johnson, Hal Gill
Forwards: Paul Stastny, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Chris Higgins
Jason Blake, Erik Cole, Brian Rolston, Zach Parise
Patrick Kane, Phil Kessel, Brian Gionta, Mark Parrish
Kyle Okposo

Although the columnist said this team could compete and beat Canada (im not saying they cant but they will definatly have their hands full when they do play Canada). No offense to America but Canada will have one hell of a roster.

Lets look at what Canada has to offer shall we. Heres a possible roster of who i think will or should make the team.

Goalie
I dont think anyone can argue the fact that this is Roberto Luongo's team but who will be the other two? Will Martin Brodeur be too old? Will Carey Price or Jonathan Bernier become superstars? Or will the usual Marty Turco, JS Giguere, Dwayne Roloson and Manny Fernandez be considered?

Defense
I believe the only two locks (barring injury) are Dion Phaneuf and Chris Pronger. After that there are so many up and coming defensemen and a few veterans who might or might not be picked. Veterans such as Scott Hannan, Ed Jovanovski, Sheldon Souray and Wade Redden. I think maybe one of the 4 makes the team, hopefully Hannan. The rest of the defensive corp will hopefully be up and coming young guys like Jay Bouwmeester, Dan Hamhuis, Shea Weber, Marc Staal, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook or Cam Barker. Possible longshots could be Chris Phillips, Francois Beauchemin or Brian Campbell (currently leading the league for points by defenseman).

Forwards
Ok so locks on the team so far would have to include Jarome Iginla, Joe Thornton, Vincent Lecavalier, Danny Heatly, Jason Spezza and of course Sidney Crosby. After those 6 the list of possible players to be selected is QUITE extensive (other nations must be jealous haha americans).

So does Canada go with veterans such as Martin St. Louis, Jonathan Cheechoo, Paul Kariya, Daniel Briere, Alex Tanguay, Brendan Morrow, Simon Gagne, Jason Arnott, Shane Doan, Ryan Smyth or Todd Bertuzzi (if he can regain his form)?

Does Canada go with Young guns such as Eric and Jordan Staal, Patrice Bergeron, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Kyle Wellwood (if he can toughen up), Nathan Horton, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Rick Nash, Jason Pominville, Wojtek Wolski, Steve Bernier or Mike Camelleri (currently leading the league in goals)?

Does Canada take a chance on a kid or rookie like Jonathan Toews, Sam Gagne, Kyle Turris, Andrew Cogliano, Jonathan Tavares or Angelo Esposito (possible darkhorse)?

And lastly does JOE SAKIC have enough left in the tank to captain this team??

So with all this said and to counter what "the hockey news" columnist said i believe even if Canada was to have two competing teams that our second string team could very well compete against team America. I wont try to name a roster because that is too hard so i will leave this to you HTR members to battle it out.

Feel free to mention anyone i missed, im sure there are plenty.

-King Canada"

Some of these players will be retired by the time 2010 rolls around.

Phillips is much more likely to make Team Canada than Redden. Some people don't realise how good he is. Still, it's a long ways away, and they want to start the youth movement next Olympics. We'll have to wait and see.

My 2010 team would definitely not include Gretzky's favouite players Kirk Maltby, Kris Draper, etc. These players cost us Torino because they were too slow. They better not make 2010 if they're still around.

Now, my team would look something like this:

Goalies: 1. Roberto Luongo 2. Carey Price (If he's #1 in Montreal, which he should be) 3. Ray Emery
Other nominees: Cam Ward, Jonathan Bernier, Marc-Andre Fleury (Not Recommended)

Centres: Jonathan Toews, Sidney Crosby, Joe Thornton, Vincent Lecavalier
Other nominees: Patrice Bergeron, Ryan Getzlaf, Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano, Kyle Chipchura, Daniel Briere, Mike Richards, Kyle Turris, Angelo Esposito, Patrick Marleau

Right Wing: Jarome Iginla, Nathan Horton, Mike Cammalleri, Jason Spezza(Move him to the wing to play with Heatley and Crosby)
Other Nominees: Corey Perry, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Michael Ryder, Guillaume Latendresse(only if he fulfill's potential), Jeff Carter, Jonathan Cheechoo

Left Wing: Rick Nash, Sean Avery, Dany Heatley, Simon Gagne
Other Nominees: Eric Staal, Scott Hartnall, Jordan Staal, Steve Bernier

Defence: Dion Phaneuf, Brent Seabrook, Jay Bouwmeester, Brent Burns, Wade Redden, Kevin Bieksa
Other Nominees: Nick Schultz, Shea Weber, Dan Hamhuis, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Marc Staal, Chris Phillips, Kristopher Letang, Eric Brewer, Barret Jackman, Luc Bourdon

The thing is, it's still so far away, older players can retire, younger players can become superstars, good players can sink, bad players can rise.

However, based on their play so far, my team would be:

Goal:

Roberto Luongo
Marty Turco

These guys get the nod just for the Dallas-Vancouver play-off series last year.

Defense:

Chris Pronger, Dion Phaneuf, Brian Campbell, Chris Phillips, Robin Regehr, Jay Boumeester

I don't think Phillips or Campbell are longshots, they were the top two Canadian-born defenseman in terms of plus-minus. Campbell also had 42 assists.

Forwards:

Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, Jarome Iginla, Sydney Crosby, Joe Thornton, Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St Louis, Alex Tanguay, Simon Gagne, Ryan Smyth, Mike Cammaleri, Rick Nash

But that's just how I see it now. By 2010 so many things could change. There's a whole lot of talented youth that will probably warrant inclusion, and some members of my current roster could be washed up by then.

There's a strong possibility that the NHL will not allow the players to participate in the next Olympics. There were too many injuries and created too long a lapse in play.

McCabe... seriously Leaf fans, get a damn clue: we're looking for the top 6 Canadian defensemen, not the top 6 overpaid one dimensional liabilities. A 40 year old Mats Sundin has more chance of playing at the next Olympics than the disastrous Brian McCabe.

Because the centre position is so much deeper with talent then either of the wing's i'm going to make some centre's winger's (i'll try to pick the centre's who would probably work the best at wing out of all the centre's)

The line are in not in order from best to worst. The line would all get the same amount of ice time

Stamkos (he'll be the #1 pick in next year's draft) - Crosby - Iginla (C)
E. Staal - Spezza - Heatley
Getzlaf - Thornton (A) - Perry
Toews - Turris - Tavares

extras: Mike Cammalleri, Rick Nash

Phanuef - Pronger (A)
Weber - Bouwmeester
Bieksa - Staal

extras: Doughty, Pietrangelo (They will go 2, 3 in next year's draft)

Luongo
Price
Bernier

In case you didn't notice this team is very young. Canada didn't win a medal at the olympic's in 2006, because they were old...

I think no matter which players they choose from on this list, Canada will not be matched talent-wise. My fear, however, is that they will simply elect to go with the most talented and in the process forget to bring along a penalty killer or defensive forward or two. Could guys like Mike Fisher or Rob Niedermayer
or Chris Kelly/Antoine Vermette (I don't want to seem Sens-biased, I'm just providing examples of two-way forwards) make this team to fill that role?

It's my understanding they will be using an NHL size rink in the '10 Olympics.  It's bad enough Nhl players are being used in the Olympics, but now they are changing the dimensions of the standard rink so the North Americans don't get schooled by the Europeans on the larger ice.

Spare me the trite responses about how I'm jealous of Canada's talent or how each country should send their best representatives to compete.  I freely admit Canada produces the best hockey talent in the world.  My beef is that there are already plenty of forums for the pros to be showcased...The Worlds, The World (former Canada) Cup and the NHL.  The world juniors seems to be the only premier hockey event for amatuers.  I'm against pros in the Olympics on any level...the "Dream Team" was one of the worst disasters in sportmanship ever.  Now that the dimensions of the playing field are being changed to stack the odds for the home team is just pathetic.
