Hockey is the game canadians can't seem to get enough of. It's like an addiction similar to playing the spin palace casino games. But most importantly it is down to the loyalty as a fellow canadian to follow the country's number 1 sport!

 Getzlaf Signed through 2012-2013 season

Ducks blanksmooth4488 writes "The Anaheim Mighty Ducks have signed Ryan Getzlaf to a US$26.625 million, five-year contract extension. This all but squashes those insane rumors regarding Brian Burke wanting to trade him due to contract issues. Good job by Burke locking Getzlaf up.

Good job on Burke in protecting his restricted free agents (we all know wat happenned last time he didnt).  Anyways i was reading this article on TSN by Bob McKenzie and he brings up a very interesting point.

http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/mckenzie/?id=223312

Because Getzlaf is signed at 5.325 a season that brings up their cap at roughly 46 million for next season.  Getzlaf, Bertuzzi, McDonald, Marchant, Rob Neids, Kunitz, Pronger, Beauchemin, Giguere, Shneider are all under contract.  All important core players but one, Cory Perry who is still unsigned.

If Scotty Neidermayer comes back and fulfills his contract next season then the Ducks are over the cap.  Brian Burke might be victim of another offer sheet.  A team like San Jose who have AMPLE cap space could EASILY outprice Burke.  If Neids comes back then they are roughly 2 million over the cap.  So they have to shed salary just to fit under the cap, STILL without Cory Perry.  If Neids decides not to come back then they have roughly 4 million dollars to sign him, but will it be enough?

If not is Bobby Ryan a sufficient enough replacement? or do the Anaheim Ducks start to decline?

Fantastic and reasonable signing.
Getlzaf may not be worth over $5 mil right now, or he may be, but he'll definitely be worth it in 2 or 3 years time.

Getzlaf isn't worth 5 million per season right now, yes he has a good chance of developing into a 5 million dollar player but this is the new NHL landscape! AND WE CAN ALL THANK KEVIN LOWE FOR IT !!!

Now every team is scrambling to sign there RFA's before they've even proven themselves to ridiculous long-term contracts before Kevin Lowe or another GM makes an offer sheet and now the player agents are starting to milk this trend and use the threat of RFA offer sheet to get higher deals.

Another kink was found in the new CBA with RFA compensation being trimmed down from 5 1st round draft picks to a hit teams can now afford. The amount UFA's make is less in the new CBA but the amount of money RFA's make has gone through the roof in the new NHL.
