 | Chicago's Goaltending Situation |
thehockeyguy writes "There has been something bothering me over the past little while with regards to the Chicago BlackHawks goaltending situation.
Before the start of the year, Chicago signed Cristobal Huet to a 4 year deal worth 5.6 million dollars/year, but when they signed Huet to that deal they still had Nikolai Khabibulin with a 1 year deal left at 6.75 million dollars. Now that being said, I'm going to assume that when they signed Huet to that deal, they figured he was going to be the #1 goaltender for them. I'm not going to take away what Khabibulin has done this year, but it seems like Chicago is going with Khabibulin for the most part for the rest of the season into the playoffs, even though they signed Huet in the off season to take over the number 1 job and take this team to the next level.
Now, since Khabibulin seems to be Chicago's #1 goaltender for the rest of the season, what does Chicago do with Huet? I honestly can't see Khabibulin staying with Chicago next year unless he takes a massive paycut and if for whatever reason he does and wants to stay with Chicago, Chicago won't be able to trade Huet because he makes too much money, I don't think Huet wants to sit on the bench considering he was signed to be the teams #1 netminder and I can't really see a team wanting to take on almost 6 million dollars in salary, especially if the salary cap stays the same or even goes down next year.
So my question to every is, why is Chicago playing Khabibulin instead of Huet, especially when your #1 goalie now won't be on your team next year? I would like everybody's opinion on this because it is driving me nuts."

Re: Chicago's Goaltending Situation (Score: 1) by Kyleton on Monday, March 30 (User Info | Send a Message) | It's to win. Khabibulin knows what it takes to win. Both goalies have similar numbers this season. The big difference however is that Khabibulin has played 3 less games has one more win, and 6 less regulation time losses. Combine that with the fact that he has won a cup and chicago is in the playoff picture, you have to do everything in your power to win. Khabibulin provides the best option currently.

Re: Chicago's Goaltending Situation (Score: 1) by Kramer on Monday, March 30 (User Info | Send a Message) | | I once read Khabibulin has a long time vodka problem. He won the 2004 Cup while juiced on vodka. And you could tell by looking at him, he looks "bombed" most of the time. |
