The rinks are larger, but the arena will be smaller. Only a few thousand fans will pack their way into the games of the Karjala Cup, in Sweden next weekend.
There will only be four teams in that tournament, with second-tier talent representing four European countries.
But, there will be a lot of attention there. The media will be buzzing. Several NHL club scouts will be in attendance.
They want to know if Peter Forsberg is still an elite hockey player.
Wait, don’t turn the page. Or, if you’re online, don’t click on another link. Yes, you’ve heard this before. It’s understood that you are tired of hearing about Peter Forsberg, his often-injured right foot and the notion that he might be coming back to the NHL.
But, this time, the cry isn’t “Wolf.” This time he really wants to play. This time he plans to prove the foot problems over.
Which is why the Flyers are dispatching European scout Ilkka Sinisalo to watch Forsberg.
And why not? With Simon Gagne’s health up in the air, Danny Briere’s groin a minor concern that could possibly become major, and the rest of the offense sputtering, the Flyers could use an offensive infusion that a healthy Forsberg could supply.
No one doubted he was a great player. No one doubted his toughness, or his skill. What they doubted was his health, and rightfully so. Forsberg is notoriously fragile.
But ,when he announced his plans to come back to the NHL in September, Sinisalo went to see him too. His report was glowing. He got a message back to G.M. Paul Holmgren that Forsberg looked like his old self. He was skating fluidly. He was dominating play. And most importantly, his foot was both pain and discomfort free.

what would leafs fans think about signing Forsberg to a one year prorated deal to play with Kessel i think they could give him a injury related deal (somewhere in the CBA it allows it to players who have played less games then have been injured in the last 4 years or something so it might not work for Forsberrg but its an option) and then we could see how it goes

With all due respect to forsberg I hope this isn't the beginning of another long drawn-out spectacle. Fine if he comes back, better if he really helps a team ( doubtfull ) but clearly this is a different league since his last comeback. The nhl is now a twenty something league not a thirty something league like it used to be. I can't really see him making any differnce at all.
